Robert & Jennie Elliott are still there and Nellie M. is just born. Brothers Thomas, Robert, and Frederick. In 1930 Nellie M. is living at 8114 Maryland Ave, in Chicago with her brother Thomas and she is using her maiden name. Probably a good bet there were no children in the Harvey / Nellie marriage. In the 1930 under marital status there is a character x'd out then S written so probably a D was x'd out. Harvey's second wife in 1930 is Evelyn J. Wood. She is 17 at the time and census indicates she was married when she was 15. They are living at what appears to be 821 West Ave in Cedar Rapids and Evelyn's 18 year old sister Margaret E. is with them. Evelyn and Margaret were born in Iowa. In 1920 they are in Rapids Township, Linn Co at the Home For The Friendless at 519 N. 15th St. in Cedar Rapids. There is no indication of children so as of 1930 it appears Harvey is childless and of course the 1940 census won't be out for awhile. Sincerely, Mike Peterson IAGenWeb Chickasaw

It appears they lived in Cedar Rapids after that. In 1930 Harvey G. is now married to Evelyn J. and is living in Cedar Rapids, Linn Co. In either case the census does not appear to reflect any children. There are several Nellie Elliotts in 1930 census and a couple Nellie M.'s all born around same time. One possibility is that she is living with a brother Thomas. Did she have a brother Thomas? If you can give me any more clues I may find her in 1930. I have not learned of any source where you can go in Chickasaw County for vitals although the county genealogical society might have something and they are worth checking out - see this page - http://iagenweb.org/chickasaw/outsidegeaniesociety.htm - I find it interesting that the WPA records the "Bruce." WPA people did not just look at cemeteries and in many cases looked at other records. So if "Bruce" is not on the headstone then my guess is there was a record somewhere which indicated she was a Bruce. I found the family in 1880 which indicates Mary was born in Maine and several of the children were born in Wisconsin. So in 1860 I find them in Grand Chute, Outagamie Co, Wisc and again it says Mary was born in Maine. I couldn't find them in 1850 either as single or married. Ancestry.com has a record of your Mary Jane Bruce with a marriage or license date of 9 Mar 1852 in Brown County to Scland Vander Bogart (Outagamie was created from Brown). If you don't have the 1860 or 1880 census data I found please let me know and I'll send you the data. Also if you have some other data on them which might help me as a clue/lead please let me know. Wish I could have been more help. Sincerely, Mike Peterson

The letter was addressed to "Mrs. Lathrop, Smith, Eckes and Riggs: United States Lines SS May 19 Dear Friends This is ging to be a family letter. I am sitting on the third deck in the sun feeling fine. But I have had sea sickness with all its trimmings, but that don't hurt any one. It is nearly dinner time (or lunch as they call it). We sure are waited on, all but put the food in our mouths. We saw another large ship last night, going the same way. Ours is heavily loaded, there being 450 Gold Star Mothers on board, besides more than 1,000 other passengers. We are (the Gold Star Mothers) to have our pictures taken today after lunch. We will be grouped by states. The ship is quite crowded, have four in a small room, four beds, two lower and two upper. If we could have had the Harding we would have had much more room and better accommodations, but it was out of order. We expect to land on Friday of this week. It is taking longer to make the trip than expected. We have a bath every night in salt water and it makes one feel fine. Everything is so clean and neat, and the food is very good. It is interesting to see the different kinds of people, but no colored people such as negroes. The high and mighty, think they are it, but we Mothers are the favored guests on board. While in New York they took us in buses to parks and places of interest, and all around it has been a fine trip, only for the seasickness. Some are not sick. Will tell all about it when we get home. I am in a room with Waterloo ladies whom I knew, and one other lady, four in all. I am not stong enough to walk the deck much yet, but will try it this afternoon. The doctor wants me to go on the upper deck, out in the sun, but the wind os so strong I don't think I will. One lady lost her hat out on the lower deck, the wind blows so very hard. Well, it is abut time to eat, so will close. Love to all my friends. Mrs. Emma Thompson -Nashua Reporter, June 11, 1930 ______________________________________________ Mrs. Emma Thompson arrived home Friday frm her trip to France with other Gold Star Mothers, where she visited the grave of her son, Robert Thompson, who gave his life in the World War. Sincerely, Mike Peterson ------------------------ Although I've already passed on a photo identified as Katherine 'Kate' Quirk Brannon. Another individual appears in several photos bearing the same name. Kate was the first wife of Patrick H. Brannon. She was born in 1849 and died in 1901. They were married in Fayette County, St. Rose, Eden Township and then moved to New Hampton, Chickasaw County where she died. Patrick remarried. He apparently was a prominent businessman in the area. I believe all of the photos to be of the same woman. One as a young woman. (This photo is interesting in that she is wearing a cross identical to the one worn by Mary Quirk Casey in an 1885 photo). The next appears to be a newlywed photo. The third is more mature. The fourth seems to be the same woman, perhaps not in good health at the time - the curl's out of her hair, her mouth is drawn, she looks very tired, sad even. (The ears seem the same to me as the first photo as does the nose). Any opinions? I'm also sending them out to the Fayette and Chickasaw County GenWeb sites asking for help in making an identification. My thought is if someone can make a positive ID on P. H. Brannon, prominent citizen, then we've got our match. My gut says its Kate. Interestingly, brother Fr. Michael Quirk was in the area, Fayette County, about the same time she married Patrick Brannon. Makes me wonder if she didn't keep house for him in Fayette County at St. Rose with Mary taking over duties in Grand Junction, Greene County when he went there. Kind of a big brother finding good husbands for his sisters kind of thing.
