    2. Judy Matthias
    3. Morning to all my friends, Just wanted you to know I have not forgot you. I had a computer class this month, work, but most of all I have been getting things lined up for a small but our First VOLBRUCK get together or reunion for tomorrow. It was kind of a hurry up thing as I have a cousin on my Blood father's side coming from MN and so my uncle and I just threw this together quick. I already have a back ache from standing over my copy mach. I am trying to get at least 10 copies of my VOLBRUCK book copied. I mean to tell you I should have said book's. I have 2 of the 3" 3 ring notebooks I am copying and also have 2 other books on families that are related that I only have bit's and pieces done. Dick & his wife will be here until Monday morning, then I have a day planed to go to New Hampton to do some look ups for some people on the IACHICKASAW county list I belong to and back to work Tuesday. Hopefully things will settle down and I can get back to bugging <BG> all of you then. Have a great weekend everyone as I plan to ;-))) Judy

    2. Mike Biwer
    3. Hi all, I hope no one minds me posting this to the list, but it will save me a lot of time. I've only gotten to the cemetery two nights this week, it's been raining and I've been busy. So far, no luck on any names that people requested. I did find a large grave marker for the surname "Sack" (?, I think) that I thought I saw on this list. If any one wants that information let me know and I'll get back to the cemetery and write it down. I'll try and get back there this weekend and continue my search!! Mary Kay in NH (New Hampton for you non northeastern Iowans)

    1. [IACHICKA-L] Union Cemetery look-up
    2. Earl L. Reep
    3. Does anyone have a copy of the cemetery listing for the Union Cemetery in Alta Vista? I am looking for the daughter of Solomon and Mary Reep whose name was Lanna or Lavina Reep. She was born around 1861 in Chickasaw County, and was listed in the 1870 but not the 1880 Census. I suspect she died in this period. Solomon was a farmer, and part time preacher who was associated with the establishment of the Evangelical Brethren Church in Alta Vista in 1864. The Union Cemetery is next to where the church was located, and it is likely that Lanna/Lavina is buried there. If there are no Reep names in the cemetery listing, maybe there is a stone with only Lanna or Lavina on it. I have noticed the tombstones of other children in my ancestry which only cite the first name. Any help is appreciated. Earl Reep Oak Harbor Wa

    3. I am curious what The Bradford Academy was as well. My Sergeant's(AKA SARGENT'S) were living in Bradford township, in Nashua. What cemeteries were in the Bradford Township area in Nashua? If anyone is doing lookups at the courthouse could you please look up any land sale transactions for Andrew Sergeant or Sargent of Nashua. His wife was Emmeline(Emma) (Graham) Sergeant. 1. [IACHICKA-L] Erion & Clark
    2. Marilyn Erion
    3. Hello All! I'm happy to see the activity on this list. Is anyone else researching the same surnames I am? My husband's grandparents are from the Alta Vista area of Chickasaw County. Charles August ERION (b. May, 1879 in IA; d. 1937, buried in Alta Vista, IA) md. Leah Belle CLARK (b. 8 May 1889 in Viola, WI; d. 16 March 1970 in Stockton, CA). Sue Picard was kind enough to give me lots of information on the Erion/Irion ancestors but I don't know much about Charles August Erion or his parents Christian Erion (Irion?) and Christina Kaufmann. I know even less about Leah Belle Clark. She lived in Alta Vista after Charles' death and married Herbert Lauck. Her father was born in PA and her mother in Germany. There were 7 brothers and sisters listed in her obit, Maude Clark Adams, Myrtle Clark Klages, Eva Clark Lusk, Mayme Clark Kintz, George Clark, John Clark and Clarence Clark. My husband's maternal grandparents were from Howard County, IA. Surnames I'm researching there include SMITH, TAFT, and HOWE. I live in Casper, Wyoming, so Iowa reseach is limited to a few times a year when I visit my son in Ames (Go Cyclones!). Any help would be appreciated and I'd love to hear from anyone reseaching the same names. And thanks for the information posted about the New Hampton newspapers! Marilyn Erion Casper, WY

    1. [IACHICKA-L] Sack Family
    2. I wonder if there is anyone on the list descended from the Sack Family? William and Elizabeth Sack came from Bavaria to settle in Chickasaw County (Postville then New Hampton) in 1869. They had 7 children, and many grandchildren. Lena Sack, their youngest, was my grandmother. I live in San Diego, but surely everyone didn't move away...

    2. Does anyone know if Alvice McGregor is still alive. She did a tremendous amount of research on the Cagley Family in Chickasaw County Iowa, Johnson County Indiana and Wythe County Virginia. She would have to be close to 100 years old. If not does anyone know where her records are located. Chickasaw County Historical Society, New Hamption Library, etc. There is also a Cagley Cemetery located between Ionia and Nashua. It is in the center of one of the square mile field sections. I have heard reports that the farmer that owns the land is going to plow over the area for field. I would appreciate any information. Curt Watts

He said that it was well remembered by all the old residents of that part of the state and was one of the first schools established for instruction beyond the common school grades. It was not endowed and it was not self supporting and it was soon discontinued. It was replaced by the Bradford Township High School. It was located in the same building as the academy directly across the street from "The Little Brown Church". The academy had to close prior to 1881. Interesting stuff. Curt Watts

    3. Hello again, Still the same day, and already three people have reported to the list that New Hampton had two newspapers, microfiolmed at both IA city and DesMoines, and also at New Hampton up to 1900. I guess it pays to speak out and say what you want to know. Now does anyone know when the first paper came into being? For my purposes, I'd need to see papers from 1855 - 1870 or so, I believe. May be too early? Betty Sullivan
