    1. [IACHICKA-L] Update: Chickasaw Co GenWeb Site
    2. Janette Hendricks
    3. Greetings Chickasaw County Iowa Researchers, Those of you who have visited the Chickasaw County GenWeb Site, since mid-August, have probably read the announcement that I have assumed the responsibility of Coordinator for the Web Site on behalf of the Chickasaw County Genealogical Society. Since then I have been teaching myself what I need to know to effectively perform this job. In August, I also had finishing work that needed to be done on a large project for the Chickasaw County Genealogical Society and the manuscript I was working on for that project has been finished (first draft) and is now in review in New Hampton at CCGS. The past several weeks I've been working on some modifications for the Chickasaw County GenWeb Site, which I hope will be interesting, informative and attractive to Web Site visitors. I am hopeful that I will be ready to upload the new material in a few weeks, but since I am still new at this, I hate to give you a "hard" date! Please be patient with me, I think it will be worth the wait. One of the new things I am planning is a page for LINKS to Genealogy Home Pages for researchers with connections to Chickasaw County. If you have your own Genealogy Web Site and would like to be included on the Chickasaw County LINKS Page...... I invite you to e-mail me your URL (Web address) so that I may include Your Link on this page. I think this could be a very useful and exciting section of the Web Site. E-mail me at my personal address: [email protected] or.... to contact ME or any RootsWeb List Administrator, put the name of the list in front of the following: [email protected] So for Chickasaw Co IA, the address would be: [email protected] FYI: The Chickasaw Co IA Mail List has now grown to over 80 subscribers! I will try to provide another update, in a couple weeks, to let you know how things are progressing. In the meantime....... Good Hunting, "Nettie" Chickasaw County Mail List Administrator Chickasaw County GenWeb Site Coordinator, CCGS

Thomas and Catherine Horachek/Horack/Horak. They farmed in Deerfield Township, Chickasaw County, app., 1880-82 (?), where my grandfather Thomas Jr., was born in 1880. 1. [IACHICKA-L] Thomas RYAN of Ireland and Iowa
    2. Seek information on Thomas Ryan, son of Phillip and Margaret Ryan. He was born in the village of Gleninchnaveigh, Parish of Upper Church, County Tipperary, Ireland. He and his brother Dennis emigrated to the United States in the early 1850s. His parents and siblings followed in 1855. Phillip Ryan and his family settled in the Town of Fabius, Onondaga County, New York, where they were enumerated on the 1855 New York State Census. At the time of the census they were residents of Fabius two months. Phillip died intestate 10 May 1858, in Fabius. Because a wife/widow was entitled to only one-third of her husband’s real property, the remaining two-thirds being reserved to the children, Margaret had to have her surviving children sign off on their share of the property. When she decided to sell the farm land in April 1866, Thomas and Dennis Ryan were residents of Roxbury, Dane County, Wisconsin. By September of that year they were residents of Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin. Thomas moved on. He is known to have lived for a while in Lawler, Chickasaw County, Iowa, and subsequently in Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa. He had a descendant by the name of Katie Walker. Any information on Thomas Ryan would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy to share my research on this family with any descendants. dick barr Syracuse, New York

    1. [IACHICKA-L] History of New Hampton, IA
    2. Mike Biwer
    3. My daughter is studying the history of New Hampton in school and brought home 6 typewritten, single spaced, pages of text. I thought I'd highlight some of for the list. Chickasaw County was first created as a political sub-division of the State of Iowa in 1851, by chapter 9, of the acts of the Third General Assembly, section 33. It was attached to Fayette County for election, revenue and judicial purposes. Later a petition was presented to the county judge of Fayette County asking that the County of Chickasaw be organized. The judge issued this warrant to that effect on June 31, 1853. Bradford was designated as the county seat. Officers elected were: LYONS, GODDARD, CAMPBELL, BABCOCK, SIMPLE. Other names mentioned are ROWLEY and FRAZEE. In the year 1854 James JARED took up a claim and located his homestead on the site where the city of New Hampton now stands. The post office was established in 1855 or 56. Osgood BOWAN was the first postmaster. New Hampton became county seat in 1857. The first bank was in 1856 and founded by A.E. BIGELOW. The first newspaper was published on Jan. 16, 1860 and called the New Hampton Courier. It was published by W. E. BEACH and L.J. YOUNG. The first paper published in Chickasaw County was the Chickasaw County Republican, published at Jacksonville. Isaac WATSON was publisher. (no date given). New Hampton was incorporated in 1873. Some other names mentioned are: JARED GURLEY SHOOK EDWARDS POWERS GARDNER RUNION CARPENTER PARKER WARNER COTANT BABCOCK SMITH DARROW SHAW HILL JOHNSON PEPPER SHEFFIELD CLOUGH BIRDSALL AYERS MAYS Some names have quite a bit of information and others just a mention of who was the first councilman (for example). Hope this helps some one out there. If any of the surnames are a "hit" let me know and I'll send you what information I have. Mary Kay

    2. Janette Hendricks
    3. Greetings Chickasaw County Researchers, I've learned from my Greene Co MO List (thanks to Megan) that RootsWeb now has the SSDI online. It is the most recent release, June 1999, containing 61,664,927 records. This can be a valuable search tool, particularly for more recent deaths, after 1960. Hint: you may find the "Advanced Search" feature easier to use, it gives you far more options. http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi Good Hunting, Jannette
