1. John Calvin McFarland 2. 6 March 1843 3. New Vienna, Trumbull County, Ohio 4. Lucinda Seavey 5. Date of Death Unknown 6. Place of Death Unknown 7. Cemetery & Location of Burial Unknown 8. Resident of Chickasaw County, Iowa 9. Company I, 5th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry 10. From An Autobiography of O.A. McFarland: "John was married August 21, 1864, and soon after that left his young wife and all the rest of the friends and enlisted in the 5th Wisconsin Infantry. I am not familiar enough with his military career to give in detail the battles in which he participated. I think he served for a time under Gen. P.H. Sheridan and then joined the main army of Gen. U.S. Grant before Petersburg and Richmond and 'was in at the death' of the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by Gen. R.E. Lee, which surrendered April 9, 1865."

Dear List~ I have reason to believe that my ancestor Carrie Sergeant who m.Charles W. Sample was related to a Smiley Sample of Nashua. Does anyone have anything on this Smiley Sample? I found him in the 1870 IA census: Sample, Smiley IA CHICKASAW CO. NASHUA 503 1870 This was the only Sample I found in Chickasaw at this time.Does anyone know if he had a son named Charles W. that m Carrie Sergeant in Nashua? Who was his mother and did he have siblings? Carrie and Charles were said to have left the area by 1889 or so and lived in St. Paul, MM until 1899, where they moved to Chicago. I am trying to track this couple down to see if they had more children and descendants. Carrie was my gg grandfather's niece. I only have they had one daughter: Descendants of Charles W. Sample 1 Charles W. Sample .. +Caroline Ann Sergeant b: April 20, 1860 in Hebron, Jefferson Co., WI m: September 13, 1882 in Nashua, Chickasaw Co, IA Father: Andrew Sergeant Mother: Emiline Graham ........ 2 Ava Zell Sample b: September 28, 1890 I saw Smiley's name mentioned in Chickasaw Co also. Does anyone know what became of them? Thanks for all replies!! - Penny Kresl e-mail: [email protected] Penny's Genealogy: http://www.elknet.net/kresl/Penny/penny.html Delavan, WI.USA.
Hi Gang~ Would someone be willing to do a lookup for me and get some information on my ggg grandfather, James SERGEANT(Sargent)? For many years, James and his wife Fanny HALE lived in Hebron, Jefferson Co WI, where 2 of his children remained and raised families. About 1876, James's 2nd eldest son, Andrew SERGEANT migrated to the NASHUA/BRADFORD area in Chickasaw Co., Where upon James went to live with him, at the age of about 74. He was blind. I found an actual document filed in Jefferson Co WI courthouse saying Andrew would care for James until his death. The Jefferson Co Union Newspaper did pick up on a partial death notice at the time of James death in Chickasaw Co since he had previously been a citizen there for so long. This was all it said: SERGEANT, JAMES (b. 1801 @ New Berlin, Chenango Co NY in 1801-d. 13 Dec 1889 @ Bradford, Chickasaw County, IA). The cause of death was paralysis of the lungs. He was totally blind. Married in 1823 to Fanny Hale (d. 1875). See JCU 20 Dec 1889 and 27 Dec 1889. He leaves 3 sons and 1 daughter. Listed only are: Andrew, of Bradford, IA Emily (Mrs S.W. Baily)- (d. 1874. They actually had 5 children: Giles Andrew Helen Daniel(my gg) Emily(d1874) James's wife Fanny (Hale) Sergeant d 1875 and is buried in Hebron, Jefferson Co, James's name and date of death were also listed on that tombstone. Was he shipped back to Hebron WI and buried in WI after he died or is he actually buried in IA? Can anyone find this information for me? A Church record of death or a death notice? I do not know what church affiliation these people were? If someone could look this information up in the Nashua/Bradford area I would be eternally grateful! I will pay an agreed fee to anyone willing to do this lookup for me. I have been looking for information of this line of Sergeant's for 7 years. I know with this new information I found that James Sergeant did indeed die in Chickasaw Co IA! Is there a genealogical society in the Bradford/Nashua area I can write to as well? Thanks to the group for any help, Penny Kresl e-mail: [email protected] Penny's Genealogy: http://www.elknet.net/kresl/Penny/penny.html Delavan, WI.USA.
To All Chickasaw County Iowa Researchers: You may be interested in four publications published in 1999 by the Chickasaw County Genealogical Society. The two marriages publications are as follows: #2295 "Chickasaw Co IA Marriages by Groom Books 1-5 1853-1901" and its companion #2294 "Chickasaw Co IA Marriages by Bride Books 1-5 1853-1901" These 1999 publications are published in alphabetical sequence (work done by Jannette Hendricks) and replaces publication #0143 which earlier was in dated chronological order. The first orders for the following new Cemetery books have just been sent out the first week in January. Publication #2389 "Chickasaw County Iowa Chickasaw Township Cemeteries", and Publication #2388 "Chickasaw County Pioneer and Early Established Cemeteries". These two books have 3179 burial records involving 29 cemeteries in Chickasaw County. "Chickasaw Township Cemeteries" publication has information on Cedar View aka Chickasaw Cemetery, Rowley Hill aka Mount Carroll Cemetery near Bassett and St Boniface Catholic Cemetery aka Ionia Cemetery. The publication also has information on two abandoned cemeteries ca 1880s. The land of these two reverted to land use as recorded in the county deed books at the turn of the century. "Chickasaw County Pioneer and Early Established Cemeteries" publication has 1803 burial records involving 24 cemeteries. Twelve of these cemeteries are considered "Pioneer." A "Pioneer" cemetery is a classification by Iowa law and the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries (SAPIC). These "Pioneer" cemeteries are defined as having six or fewer burials in the last fifty years. Some of the cemetery records are recorded in earlier CCGS/IGS published books and have now been updated. These two cemetery books have burial records, some as early as 1852. About 1500 obituaries were read (in 1999) and additional date information found in the obits was cross-referenced and added to existing burial records. Most often, the tombstone has only the year of birth and death. The added "months and day" data will make it possible for future researchers to find the obituary on film. This work is done by CCGS Member Jeanette Kottke this past year and with other members' help canvassed the cemeteries in 1999. The work was cross-referenced with earlier Chickasaw County Genealogical Society canvasses done in the late 1970s along with other extant documentation such as church records, W.P.A. and other vital records. As is often the case, errors have occurred and when found, every effort was made to check further records to find a correct entry. Each of the 12 township pages include its area cemetery history. It is the most up-to-date work available. The CCGS works in conjunction with the Iowa State Genealogical Society (IGS) to make our publications available to interested researchers. Within the state and county genealogical societies, this is known as "The Revenue Sharing Program." The state level society is able to provide support to the smaller county societies with their publications programs by taking responsibility for the reproduction, order filling and shipping of ordered publications to purchasers. Efficiencies resulting from this cooperative effort and centralized approach helps to keep the cost of publications down for everyone. Hope this information helps for anyone wondering why CCGS publications are ordered from the Iowa Genealogical Society, rather than directly from CCGS. Hello to the Great State of Iowa, I am searching for any information anyone can provide me with regard to the surname TARRANT and FEDEREN. Both families lived in various parts of the state, but spent quite a bit of time in the Minneapolis area. I am searching for PHILIP FEDEREN (1883) and his wife EDITH FEDEREN (1884) and their two children FABIOLA TARRANT (1897) and CECILE TARRANT (1893). They were last known to be in the Twin Cities area in 1944, but their descendants could be anywhere by now. They were relatives of GEORGE A. SHANNON AND ISABELLA (McDonald) SHANNON of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and their son ROBERT D. SHANNON, who was last known around 1942-44 to be living in Spencer, Iowa. Robert's wife was named JESSE and his children were ANNABELLE and GEORGE, also of Chippewa Falls, WI. Any information regarding these families or their descendants would be greatly appreciated. Hello everyone! I am new to the list, so please bear with me. I am looking for information on the FLETCHER family from Lawler, Iowa. 1880 census lists: James FLETCHER (age 36) as widower, born in Wisconsin (?) John R. FLETCHER (age 7) born in Lawler (@ 7 Mar 1873) James FLETCHER is listed as a widower. I am told by family that his wife's name may have been Clarissa or Cornelia. Unfortunately, this is all the information I have so far after two years of searching. I am not quite sure how to proceed at this point. Does anyone have any ideas?? In fact, has anyone heard anything about the FLETCHER family? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Hello everyone! I am new to the list, so please bear with me. I am researching family in Chickasaw Co. The surname is FLETCHER. So far, I have found James FLETCHER (Lawler, Iowa) listed in the 1880 census. He is listed as a widower (I think his wife's name was Cornelia or Clarissa), and his son John R. FLETCHER is also listed. That is all the information I have so far after two years of searching. As a fairly inexperienced genealogist, I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. Does anyone have any ideas? In fact, has anyone heard anything about the FLETCHER family? I believe they lived in Lawler, Iowa since @ 1875??? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!! Hi, Re: DICKINSON & PITTENGER lines Well I have folks from Pa coming through Ill. to New Hampton. I have folks coming from New Hampshire (we think) coming to New Hampton, we have marriages in New Hampton, Babies being born etc. Must have been a happening place in the mid 1800"s :-). I thought I'd post these names and story incase they ring a bell with anyone. First George DICKINSON & his brother E.H. DICKINSON (perhaps Ethan) came in the mid 1800"s from New Hampshire to New Hampton. George DICKINSON fathered some 23 children including Lewis, Charles, Coryell(b 1871), Burt, Frank, Etta & Jenny One of George's wives was named Nancy, another was Melvina RIDDLE. So we now have my gg grandfather Coryell DICKINSON and family in New Hampton...meanwhile in Lycoming Pa, Abraham PITTENGER and his wife Minerva CHAPMAN pack up their crew of Samuel S., George C., Reuben S., Marget A. (Margrett Amela), Henry C. & Robert C. head west, stopping in Kane CTy Ill. to have more kids, George Washington Pittenger, William Lafeyett Pittenger , John, Joseph, Rozett, Frank L. & Fred E. Abraham & family arrive in New Hampton are sometime after 1864. Son, Samuel PITTENGER (my gg grandfather)brings a wife Margaret HOLDEN from Kane CTy and start their family in New Hampton having the following: from 1862-1882 Anna Viola, Minera Lucresia, Ida, Edgar Samuel, Etta Mae, Claire Belle, & Mayme. Their daughter Etta Mae PITTINGER marries George DICKINSON's son CORYELL and this is my line. Abraham PITTENGER died in 1889 and his wife Minerva in 1895 both at the farmstead near Alta Vista. Their obituaries say they were one of the first settlers in Chickasaw County. They are buried at the Deerfield Cemetery. So it looks like New Hampton & Chickasaw Cty hold some important keys to the family tree. Thanks for listening, Carol Dickinson Robertson
