Recently I was able to climb a genealogical brick wall. I had found the date of birth of my 4th great grandmother. BUT, the day was expressed as "2. dom post pasche 1710" or the 2nd Sunday after Easter 1710. It is not at all unusual for dates to be expressed in this manner, when you are researching church records, both in the USA as well as in Europe. I checked my Prayer Book for computation of the actual date. It did not give dates as far back as 1710. I checked with my clergy, no help there. When all else failed, I went to the reference desk at my local library. They were not able to provide an immediate answer. However, California has a valuable research tool, the Serra Research Center that is staffed to answer just such unusual requests. Eureka, they found it; in the year 1710, Easter was on 20 April. It might well be on the internet, I have not checked. REFERENCE: PARISE, Frank "The Book of Calendars", New York, Facts on File, Inc. pp 294-297 & 328. Amongst my inherited photos is one of those postcard type photo's of the church at Jericho (and I have no idea what significance it has being in the photo album!) so I especially enjoyed that history of the Norwegian churches. Isn't ?stavkirche? part of that heritage?-I visited a replica in Rapid City, S.D. and it was fascinating-did they ever use that construction technique in Iowa? Andreas Historical Atlas of Iowa - 1875. In it I found a George C. Millard living in Section 23 of Bradford Township. His occupation was listed as "Farmer & Carpenter". He was born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania and came to Iowa in 1873. I hope this helps.

With additional information on the COTANT and DANA families in the 1883 Chickasaw Co Histories and 1919 Chickasaw History, found ALBERT (BERT) COTANT, married Maude M DANA abt 1898 and my grandfather LESTER A GRANGER married her sister Carrie DANA, March 16, 1892. Posted on: Chickasaw County Iowa Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/Chickasaw?read=446 Surname: Coutant, Cotant, King ------------------------- Thank you in responding to my query. I don't have a Bert Coutant listed among Emma's siblings. I also received another response from a woman who I believe is looking for the same family as myself. She has some information. She sent me a list of Emma's siblings. They are: William Cotant Birth: about 1853 Martha Cotant Birth: about 1855 Amelia Cotant Birth: about 1857 Emma Cotant Birth: 7 Aug. 1859 Allen Cotant Birth: about 1861 Alfred Cotant Birth: 23 June 1865 If any of these sound familiar please let me know. Thank You. Pam Mishun
Leonard, Albert (Bert) Cotant, born 13 Nov 1873 was probably a cousin to Emma. Bert was the youngest of 6 born to Haviland Purdy Cotant. Haviland was the youngest of many sons that came to Iowa with their parents, Benoni and Lydia Coutant. Thank you so much for the personal information, your story is going into my notebook on the Cotant family. By the way did anyone take a picture of Bert when he made that interesting trip across Iowa? Maybe the paper had an article, would that have been around 1954? He lived to see 90 years! Albert had 10 children, it would be wonderful to hear from one of his descendants. Thank you again, Carolyn Graeser -----Original Message----- From: Leonard Granger >Did Emma Coutant born May 7, 1857 have a younger brother Bert Coutant born >in about 1870, also in New Hampton, Chickasaw Co, Iowa? Posted on: Chickasaw County Iowa Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/Chickasaw?read=443 Surname: Young ------------------------- I have finally made a connection with the William Young in your message. He was a brother to Joseph Young (also from Wayne Co., NY). Subsequently to my original posting I have found that Joseph Young was the father to my great-grandfather John Hopkins Young. It appears that Joseph came to Chickasaw County in early 1861 and left for Kansas in 1872 or 1873. He also had another brother, Samuel Young, that came to Chickasaw County sometime after 1860. I find, William & Joseph listed in the 1870 Census in Chickasaw County, but not Samuel. Any further information on these three brothers or their descendants would be greatly appreciated.
Posted on: Chickasaw County Iowa Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/Chickasaw?read=442 Surname: Coutant, Cotant, King ------------------------- Any information at all on Emma Coutant. Her father's name I believe was George. Emma was born May 7, 1857 in New Hampton, Iowa, Chickasaw County. She married a man by the name of William Hume. He died in Montana in the early to mid 1890's. She then married a man by the name of Lewis Mingim King (my Great Grandfather). They had one son together, Lewis Mingim King Jr. Any information at all on any of these people would be greatly appreciated.
