    3. Hello! This is my first post. I decided to answer Jannette's roll call. I am looking for information on the Huffman surname. Here is the information I have. Joseph H. W. Huffman born: 1805 (I don't know where he was born). Mary Montgomery (his wife) born: 1807 (I don't know where she was born). I know they lived in Greenfield, Ohio. In 1835, they moved from Ohio to Buck Creek, Carroll County, Indiana. Then in 1855, they moved from Indiana to Chickasaw County. They had 10 children: Josephus, Henry, Mary, Levi, Florence, Alfred, Aaron, Humphrey, Reuben(my great great grandfather) and Jethro. I would love to find out their nationality as well as where they were born. If any of this information rings a bell with someone, I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Renae Meyer

    3. "DO GENEALOGISTS VOTE?" by Michael John Neill ================================================== I was recently given a handbill by a candidate running for a county courthouse office. The small card indicated that, among other things, "geneology" [sic.] was a "service" the office provided. This service would continue under the candidate's administration. The acknowledgement of genealogists was encouraging. The misspelling, while not surprising, deflated my excitement. Personally, if you're going to appeal to a group of potential voters, at least spell their name correctly. However, it was definitely a step in the right direction, and one more indication that non-genealogists are aware of the surge of interest in family history. November will soon be here, and with it Election Day. Have you even given a thought to the individuals who are running for those local offices that set access policies for public records? You can't vote in every county where you have ancestors, but you most certainly can vote in those local elections where you live. Some politicians encourage the dead to vote, but it's probably best not to try to vote in those counties where you have ancestral ties. That said, there are many circuit clerk, county recorder, and other "courthouse official" jobs on the election slate this year. These officials frequently set or significantly influence the ways in which genealogists can access records. Have you tried to find out the candidate's views on records access? Does the candidate even know how records in her office (or the office she hopes to get) are created and preserved? Does the candidate have any thoughts about public access to these records? Does he even know where the early records are kept (knowing how to search them is another matter entirely)? Have we thought to ask the candidate for county recorder what she plans to recommend in response to the lack of space in her office? Have we thought to ask how the old records will be impacted by this lack of space? Are responsible preservation techniques being pursued in a fiscally and archivally responsible fashion? Records access can vary greatly from one county to another, and in many areas the implementation of policy is left to the clerk and his assistants. I've been in county offices where the clerk and her staff would get the "genealogist friendly" seal of approval. I've been in offices where it seemed like they should have had a pedigree chart on the front door with the word "NO" emblazoned across it. And I've seen every shade in between. However, these are questions better answered sooner rather than later. Consider having the candidates come to your genealogical society meeting for a question-and-answer session. You might find that there are legitimate reasons why access to some records is restricted or why staff hours have been cut back. You may find that the candidate does not understand genealogists' or family historians' needs and makes decisions accordingly. You may find the candidate willing to work with genealogists as best he can, given his duties involving current record keeping and "present-day" activities. Current business, when combined with budget constraints, space difficulties, and other factors, may create difficulties for genealogists. You may get answers you really do not want to hear. The candidate may not consider genealogists a large enough group to worry about. Keep in mind that a candidate from "that other party" may be a bit more friendly to family historians than the candidate from "your party." I'm not suggesting genealogists form their own political party, although instead of "Four More Years" a potential slogan could be "Four More Forebears." Some say those who are passive and fail to act have no room to complain about the results. We can always complain--it just may not do much good. I remember a few years ago seeing a bumper sticker that said, "I smoke and I vote." Maybe we should develop a parallel: "I dig roots and I vote." ___________________________________________________________________ Michael John Neill, is the Course I Coordinator at the Genealogical Institute of Mid America (GIMA) held annually in Springfield, Illinois, and is also on the faculty of Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. It was very nice of you to offer to share your information about Ole Olson Natvig with me but I am not a descendant of Ole Natvig and have absolutely NO connection to the family at all. I was in a thrift store in Santa Maria, CA a couple of weeks ago and saw two very old beautiful family photos for sale. The names of the father and mother and children were on the backs. Having the desire and love for finding out all that I can about my own ancestors, I knew that there was probably someone out there from this family that would also treasure a picture of their loved ones. I just could not stant to think of the pictures being thrown in some dumpster and lost forever so I just had to find the person that should have these pictures. So I went back and purchased them and have been trying to locate a direct descendant of this beautiful family. The names are as follows: Father: Ole Erickson Natvig Mother: Gertrude Hofland Natvig Children: Andrew Alert Carl Day Ella George Hannah Herman Iven Lena Mathilda Ole Jr. Peter I believe that the picture was taken around 1886 or 1887. I do not see any connection between this Ole Natvig family and the photo of the other family but I'm sure that they were donated by the same person as the framing was identical. The second family was: Father: Wayland Galusha (W. G.) Shaffer Mother: Izetti Children: Alice Fred Grace Gordon Henry Lauren Myrtle >From what I can gather on the internet, the Wayland Shaffer family was from the area of New Hampton, Chickasaw Co, Iowa. I am also looking for this family as I purchased both of the photos. From the internet information it appears that the mother was Izetti Alcena Markle. She was born May 21, 1867 in New Hampton, Chickasaw Co., Iowa. Wayland and Izetti were said to have married on March 26, 1885 in New Hampton, Chickasaw Co., Iowa. So......This is all of the information that I have right now but I feel very confident that I will find a direct descendant of these people and I do hope that they will keep the memory of these beautiful people alive. If you can help me locate family members please let me know. Thanks, Glenda Ferrari Hello Glenda, NO, I do not descend from Ole Olson Natvig. Ole Olson Natvig was the husband of Anna Marie Borlaug. Anna Marie Borlaug had a brother named John Olson Borlaug. John and Anna were the children of John Olson Borlaug AND Clara Josephine Johnson. Clara Josephine Johnson is my third cousin. For some reason, I have collected a lot of information on the family of Anna marie borlaug, the wife of Ole Olson Natvig. Co-incidentaly, i was about to dispose of some of this information. If you will send me your snail-mail address, I will be happy to send you what data I have plus the Family Group Records for the ancestors of Anna marie Borlaug. IF you are interested, please return this message with your snail-mail address. That way I will not have to go back through all of this to see what you can use. 3. I am new to the list and am searching for information on the following couple: Alvin Flint, b. abt. 1822 in VT, married Sarah Van Valin, b. abt. 1826 in Poughkeepsie, NY. In the 1870 census Alvin is listed as the mayor of Nashua and a wealthy man, owning $112,000 in real estate and a personal estate of $3000. Living with them are Emma Turner, age 17, born Wisconsin and Arabell Clark, age 20, also born in Wisconsin. I have reason to believe these are Sarah's nieces. Sarah Flint is the sister of my direct ancestor, and I understand she died in Nashua. I would be VERY interested in hearing from anyone who can shed more light on Mayor Flint's life for me. Thanks, Marie

    3. Posted on: Chickasaw County Iowa Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ia/Chickasaw/521 Surname: SPRINGER, McCORMACK, KONANTZ ------------------------- Donna: I know of a Florence Springer born December 11, 1894 in Lawler, Chickasaw County, Iowa who was the daughter of William Henry Springer and Mary E. McCormack. Florence did marry Oscar Weber. She had these five children: Margaret Born March 2 1914 Odessa Born 15 Aug 1918 Leota 27 Nov. 1920 Don 11 Mar. 1923 William August 1924 All the children were born in Lawler, Chickasaw County. You said your grandma was born in 1859 but that means she was having children when she was almost 60. The Florence I'm telling you about here would have been about 20 with her first child and 30 with her last. All of the children's names are right so this must be your grandma. I just got all of this information a few hours ago from an entry in MyTree.com posted by a lady in California whose former husband was named Kevin Springer and was also a descendant of William's. These people and you and I are descendants of William Henry Springer's mother and father, Christopher Springer (B. Germany abt. 1835, D. Chickasaw county 1910) and his wife Rosina Konantz (B. Germany abt 1837, D. Chickasaw County 1894). My mother's maiden name is Springer. I have more information.
