Here are some answers that i received and thanks to all for the help. to the "Pioneer Cemetery in Liberty Township, one of the most beautiful rural cemeteries in the state. It is just east of Posten's Grove", I will also mention a MONTZ descendant has contacted me and we are working on that family line.Abbie J.Montz/Clement M.Willey. Thanks again, Carol >>>>Pioneer Cemetery is located in Liberty Township, Scott Co., north of New Liberty. It is a beautiful cemetery surrounded by a stone fence. It is, of course, in a rural area; and has lovely farm ground on all sides. There are many pioneers of the area buried here. If I can be of further help, let me know. Sandy>>>>>> ----- >>>Here is something on the mentioned pioneers. Stebbins in my line. There is an acct. of this cemetery in Stones and Sites of Cedar Co. 1836-1986, by Cedar Co., Historical Society. In Cedar Land, Chapter XXIII on Mechanicsville..."First pioneers in this part of Cedar was a little band of immigrants, who on the 3rd of March 1836 came into the county from the southeast and temporarily established a camp in the open not far from the southern boundary. They rested a few days in this camp to regain their strength and allow the weather to abate. Then it was time to explore the territory. The men visited what was to be Red Oak, Little Lin, Mason's Grove, Picayune, Yankee Grove and Pioneer Grove. They moved to the Cedar river and inspected the area at Gowers Ferry and the Bluffs. After they had returned to their camp, a decision was reached that Pioneer Grove was the area to stake their "claims". In this area of heavy timber, near the west end of the SE1/4 Sec. 11-82-4, the first cabin in the northern part of the county, and perhaps in the entire county, was erected. This little band consisted of ABNER STEBBINS, Charles Dodge, Chase and Crampton, with the addition of Alanson Pope a short time later, put in a garden of about an acre located east in Sec. 11. Various vegetables, melons, pumpkins and corn were planted and a good harvest was enjoyed. That Fall, Apple and Pear trees were planted at the garden site with the intention of moving them the next year after they had taken root. Patriotic men, this little band celebrated the first observance of July the 4th in Cedar County. Early in the fall of 1836, these pioneers decided, for the sake of safety from starvation and cold, that it would be prudent to return to their former homes for the winter. Pope went back to NY and STEBBINS to ILLINOIS. Stebbins returned with his family the next Spring. --------------- >>/Carol: My ancestors, Wright/Donohue, settled in the Inland area in about 1855. My great-grandfather was buried in a "pioneer cemetery" in that area, and then his body was moved to the Masonic Cemetery in Tipton. I will see if I can find some information for you. Ken Wright ------------------ >>>>Hi Carol, There is a Pioneer Grove cemetery which is very rural, but it sits about 5 miles east of Solon and about 5 miles SW of Mechanicsville on the creek. There was a church there that burned about 30 years ago and the cemetery is about 1 acre of very badly damaged tombstones. Mostly they are Bardue family and relatives, and nearby families who pioneered the area. I know the one you're talking about and have been there but we don't have a Liberty township in Cedar County. I think it's actually on the Clinton County/Cedar County border. To get there, go south from Wheatland to Bennett. Just before you actually get to the 'town' of Bennett (it's about six houses and a general store.) turn right on the dirt road there. Go about 4-5 miles following that road and you will eventually see it on the left hand side of the road. It has a stone wall around it, an arch into it from the north side and sits on the SE corner of a four way stop. Just to the south of it is the home of the Schuelter family. I went there once to talk with Mrs. Schuelter about the Licht family genealogy. Her grandmother was a Licht. :-) She's an avid Clinton County genealogist and member of their society which is why I think the cemetery is actually in Clinton County. You're right though! It's a beautiful cemetery. -- *********************************** What good is magic if it can't save a unicorn? *********************************** Diana Muir, List Owner, Professional Genealogist and Educator
