There were almost 20 families who came to the Lowden area from Licking co, Ohio, the Parr family, and VanHorn among them. They were the original settlers. In 1849, the Catholic priest from Garryowen (just north of Lowden and the only Catholic priest in the area) took a wagon train west to the Gold Rush. Some stopped in Nebraska and formed a town, others went on. There is a 3 year gap in the records for Garryowen but you may be able to fill in some of the gaps by researching the priest, his travels and the families who went with him through the Diocese archives in Dubuque.
