    1. OLIVER PERRY HARPER - Cedar Valley, Iowa
    2. Lynn & Jan James
    3. Hello, I'm new to the list and wondering if someone might be able to help me. I'm trying to find information about my GGGrandfather OLIVER PERRY HARPER. I have a page that states: "It is claimed that OLIVER PERRY HARPER made the first entry ever made in Cedar Valley, and who located on the quarter north east of the power plant, now known as Hadley's Island. Mr. Harper, who drowned a few years later in the Cedar River near his sod house, is known, accordingly as the first postmaster of Cedar Valley." I have that he died July 18, 1877. I also have names and dates of several of his children that were born there in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (Or so the stories go). I'm also trying to find out any information on Oliver's wife PRICILLA JANE HARPER/BUKER. She is said to have died June 2, 1880 in Cedar Rapids. For several years I've been on the wrong path of the HARPER family. Some of the notes I have stated that they were in Cedar Rapids, Cedar River, Nebraska. But after hitting nothing but dead ends and then going on a hunch to look up Iowa I found a Cedar Valley there too. I have several questions. What county would the Cedar River in the Cedar Valley, Iowa be in? Would they have put Cedar Rapids as the biggest town then? Also, does anyone know where they might be buried? Where would the local newspaper have been that might have carried the obit notice for them or birth announcements for the children??? Thank you for ANY help you might be able to give me on this. Sincerely, Jan James ljjames@inreach.com

    1. The 'Original' Lorenzo Dow
    2. Sue Cook
    3. Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. (He was born in 1777 in CT and died in 1834 in Georgetown, DC.) Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page. I hope you enjoy the stories! Blessings! Sue Montgomery-Cook

    3. You are absolutely correct that there was a problem with the original transcriptions. I found when going through it that whoever had transcribed it had turned the n's and e's upside down. N's became u's, m's were w's. It was bizarre. Someone was trying to do an 'exact' job and in the process mutilated it by not recognizing the handwriting pecularities of the writing. I was familiar with some names and fixed them, but some are still mutilated. If you need help finding the originals, or if the page numbers are incorrect, let me know. I have the originals and go to the courthouse often. -- Diana Hanson, Administrator, Iowa Digital Education Association Professional Genealogist ************************************************* What good is magic if it can't save a unicorn? ************************************************* http://www.idea.edu/index.html (Idea School) http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5327/ireland.htm (Original IrelandGenWeb Resource Pages and Passenger Lists) http://www.idea.edu/courses/general/gen/index.html (Free Genealogy Classes) http://www.idea.edu/staff/hanson/hubbard/index.html (Mother Hubbard's Cupboard)

The brides have not been incorporated yet into the bride index, but will shortly. Also, you might want to check out lesson 6_3 of the certification class. It's a freebie for everyone and includes gravestone markers and urls relative to finding out information about them. All the markers came from Lowden cemeteries, Van Horn and Trinity Lutheran. More next week guys! Also, Iowa county has added the Military Graves Registration Index and Lesson 7 for Scotland and 3 for Germany have been posted! Enjoy! Diana

    1. ELDREDGE/ROMAN 1870-1890
    2. Vernon Buck
    3. Hello, all I am searching for any references to the following individuals, whom I believe may have lived in or near Cedar Co., IA, in the time frame of 1870 to 1886: Barnabas Elmore ELDREDGE, b. 3-MAY-1862 Mary M. ROMAN, b. 1863-1865 A marriage record, newspaper article, or any other reference would be very helpful. Barnabas was living with his father Deloss Eldredge in Oxford Mills, IA, in 1870 (census). His first child, Ernest E. Eldredge, was born 27-Aug-1886 in West Liberty, IA. Therefore, I have reason to think he may have been in Cedar Co. in the intervening years. His occupation was carpenter. Norman Eldredge of Clarence TWP, Cedar Co., 1880 is Barnabas's uncle; George D. and Willie B. Eldredge of Cedar Co. were his cousins. Mary M. Roman was wife of Barnabas Eldredge. She was born in OH, but may have come to IA as early as 1868. Parents/relatives unknown. She died of diabetes 15-Oct-1895 in Ft. Dodge, IA. Thank you, Vern

I was wondering if there is any info on them or their wives or children there in Cedar County. Thank you! Joe Derr Family Genealogist

    1. Cedar County Genealogical History 1998
    2. Diana
    3. Hi guys! My name is Diana Hanson and I am the internet host of the IAGenWeb page for Cedar County, Iowa. I live in nearby Anamosa, just 18 miles away and travel to Tipton (the county seat) and Lowden (my home of my children's grandfather) quite often to do genealogy. This past summer my 16 year old daughter and I canvased all the cemeteries in the Lowden area and redid two of them, Van Horn and the Trininty Lutheran Cemetery. They are currently onine at the IACedar County GenWeb page. Our next goal is to do the cemeteries in the other towns, going straight west on Highway 30 and then doing the other towns such as Tipton. However, if you need a lookup in any of them, don't hesitate to ask. They were done in the 30's and the 50s so other records do exist. I am putting together a Cedar County IA Genealogical History 1998 this year and would request, if possible, that everyone send in their pedigrees and accompanying family information for inclusion. This is FREE! You don't have to pay anything to have your family included. I did this two years ago for Jones County and we ended up with over 15,000 names. Also, be aware that if you submit your families and you are missing birth, marriage, and death dates in Cedar County, I will automatically look them up at the Recorder's office. Free service! Besides, I'm there anyway! :) Check out the Cedar County pages. If there's anything you'd like to see get done let me know. I'm working on adding more marriages right now. I have the entire index at home for the first volumes but am a little slow at getting them online.
