    1. One Time Genealogical Survey - Please respond privately.
    2. Diana Hanson
    3. The following survey is part of a Ph.D. Sociology dissertation being done by the List Owner, Diana Hanson. This survey will not be sent out again, so if you do not wish to participate, simple hit delete. DO NOT RESPOND or send complaints to the list. If you have a complaint, please write to me personally. However, your help would be greatly appreciated as this survey is genealogically related! The survey is to determine if certain ancestry and culturalization can be used to track potential for giftedness in subsequent generations. This information will be used as part of a research project which hopes to be able to recommend what types of people (with which ancestry) and culturalization should be used to populate long-term colonization efforts such as Moon-Base or a Mars mission which would go on for generations. None of this information will have names attached to it. All names will be given Afphental numbers (#'s assigned by Family Tree Maker) for data purposes. DO NOT SEND COMMENTS ABOUT THIS SURVEY BACK TO THE LIST! Please respond privately. You will not be sent a second survey or followup message unless you specifically ask to be notified of the results of this survey. To answer the questions, hit REPLY TO on your mail menu, and then make certain to quote the entire message (writing the answers in between the numbers) or by cutting and pasting the text into another mail message. Enlarge the screen to the maximum of your screen to make it easier to read. There is no need to put your name anywhere on this, and all return email addresses will be deleted after surveys are tallied. ************************************************************************************* Survey Questions: ************************************************************************************* 1. 1. Verifying birth dates before 1880
    2. Diana Hanson
    3. As all of you know, state vital records for births don't start in Iowa, Illinois and points west (by law) until 1 July 1880. In order to verify birth dates before that date, you can do severalt things: 1. Find them as a child under the age of 10 in the 1880 Census SOUNDEX. This is an index of families with children under the age of 10 and gives the month and year of their birth. 2. Find them in the 1900, 1910, or 1925 census. This gives the month and year of ALL family members who are in the census. 3. Find the date on a tombstone, death record, marriage record, church record or school record. 4. Find them listed as an heir in a probate record which usually gives dates of birth for spouses and children. 5. Find them listed as heirs in a military pension records (Civil War, etc.) which lists dates of birth for spouses and children. 3. Dear Santa Claus I don't believe in Santa Claus like many other folks. I think you're just a fairy tale. I think you're just a hoax. I don't believe you're keeping track of who's been bad or good. I don't believe you know if I've been sleeping when I should. I don't believe that reindeer fly. I don't believe in elves. I think the toys beneath our tree were bought from toy store shelves. I once believed (when I was six); at seven I know better. But just in case, if I am wrong... please disregard this letter.

    3. Actually, there were two people from Cedar County named Ives who fought in the Civil War. They are: Ives WH Private "18th Inf. Ives Wm. H Farrier "8th Calvary Co. K This was taken directly from the Ceadr County History. It looks as if someone didn't do a thorough search of the NARA archives when you asked. I'd check the Iowa Rosters for additional information. -- Diana Hanson, Administrator, Iowa Digital Education Association Professional Genealogist ************************************************* What good is magic if it can't save a unicorn? ************************************************* http://www.idea.edu/index.html (Idea School) http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5327/ireland.htm (Original IrelandGenWeb Resource Pages and Passenger Lists) http://www.idea.edu/courses/general/gen/index.html (Free Genealogy Classes) http://www.idea.edu/staff/hanson/hubbard/index.html (Mother Hubbard's Cupboard)

    2. ajives
    3. Does anyone know anything at all about a William H. Ives, b. 8/10/1844, d. 8/10/1899. He enlisted as a private in the 18th Iowa Infantry 6/11/1862 and was discharged 2/19/1863. I know nothing more about him. All of the above information comes from his gravestone, in the Masonic Cemetery, Center Township, Cedar County, Iowa. The reason he interests me is probably obvious to all the regulars here. The reason he baffles me is that I have already checked NARA Civil War service records for Iowa, and found NOBODY named Ives.
