Davis AFFICDAVIT-CIVIL WAR PENSION 12 JUNE 1886 William Gilley I became acquainted with John Hupp when he first moved to Carroll County Iowa in the fall of 1863, and I was -- acquainted with him from that time to the time of his death, having been a close neighbor of his most of this time. When I first became acquainted with said John Hupp he was an old man and unable to do much work. His family at home during that time was a wife & daughter. The first year I know him he lived on a small rented farm. He had 40 acres of land and a team and no other property that I knew of and in 1865 he had 7 or 8 acres broke in his farm and built there on a small cabin which he moved into. During the winterof 1865-6 he went to Panora Mills (a distance of 30 miles) for flour meal for his family and was overtaken by a severe snowstorm and was so badly frozen as to be totally disabled for several months. He had 10 acres more of his land broke up in 1866. He was unable to get the balance of his land in cultivation. In the spring of 1868, he was ki! cked by a horse from the effects of which he never recovered. Since the whole time I knew the said John Hupp he was largely dependent for support of himself and family upon his neighbors and friends. He died in June 1871. He was 68 years old at the time of his death. ( this is my 4th great grandfather)
