ODD FELLOW 40 YEARS Funeral was attended by host of friends John W. Hupp, Pioneer resident of Carroll county, passed away at the home of his son, Jesse, in the Glidden neighborhood last Sunday. Mr Hupp was indeed a pioneer coming to this country at the age of 13 in 1864. Practically all of his life was spent int the vicinity of Old Carrollton and he was held in high esteem by the host of friends whom he enjoyed. The funeral was held Tuesday at Old Carrollton, Rev. Dirks of the United Brethren Church of Ralston having charge of the services. Memebers ofthe Odd Fellows Lodge of which Mr. Hupp had been a member over 40 years acted as Pallbearers. The funeral was one of the largest ever held at that place, the high esteem with which Mr. Hupp was regarded is shown by the fact that many threashing rigs in that vicinity were silent that crews might attend the funeral. The obituary as read by Rev. Dirks at the services follows: John W. Hupp passed Sunday morning, July 27, at the home of his son Jesse, after an illness of four months. During this illness he was bedfast with the exception of two weeks. He was a very patient suffurer and was ready to depart from this world as he expressed to his friends and loved ones many times. He was born in Noble county Ohio July 14,1849. At the time of his passing he was 79 years and 12 days. He was the second child of Isaac and Elizabeth Hupp. At the age ofthirteen he moved to Iowa with his parents, and settled in the vicinity of Carrollton, Carroll county, Iowa, where he lived most of his life. He was a great lover of nature, his greatest pleasure being hunting and fishing in the early days when wild game was more plentiful. He was one of the oldest settlers in Carroll county. In the early dayshe was employed in the first barber shop and the first butcher shop inthe town of Carroll. During the time the Chicago North Western railroadwas being built he supplied the crew with meat, hauling it with a team of oxen from Jefferson to Denison. [Bill Cody was in charge of getting food to the railroad workers. NHH] In the year of 1872 he was united in marriage to Narcissus Sigler, daughter of John and Rachel Sigler. Mrs. Hupp preceded him in death,January 27, 1929, exactly one year and six months before his death. Of their seven children three have precedded him in death, they are:Virginia who died July 26, 1884; Nellie May, August 22, 1879, Cora BelleYoung, December 5, 1919. He leaves to mourn his death three sons and one daughter they are: Emanuel, of Spirit Lake, Jesse of Glidden, William of Fort Crook, Nebraska, and Mrs. Anna Andrews of Chicago; one brother, Seph Hupp, of Bloomfied, Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. Alice Jefferson of Sioux City; Twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren,several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
