Whisler died March 1, 2001, at Sutter Davis Hospital. Born in Coon Rapids, Iowa, on Aug. 15, 1920, to George R. and Martha E. Whisler, he was 80. He had lived in Davis since 1946 and was a staff research associate in the pomology department at UC Davis for more than 40 years. He served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Army during World War II, and he also served in the Korean War. He was active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scout master of Troop 111 and adviser to Explorer Post 461. He received the Silver Bear Award from the Golden Empire Council for his many years of service with the Boy Scouts. He is survived by his wife, Beverly J. Whisler of Davis; his sons, John R. Whisler of Lodi and Edward D. Whisler of Davis; and his granddaughter, Katy J. Whisler of Eugene, Ore. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St., Davis.
