Surnames: Doran Pendergast Trullinger Christy Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Gk.2ADI/1108 Message Board Post: In Memory of an Octogenerian Patrick Doran Sr., died at his home in Union township, near the Green county line, Monday night at 10:30. Mr. Doran had been ailing for some time and his death came from being worn out in old age. He was eighty three years old. No disease of special nature, but a quiet passing away of life took the spirit from this world to the world beyond. Mr. Doran came to this country from Ireland, in 1847. He was born in Waterford county, Ireland in the early part of the nineteenth century. His trip from Ireland took seven weeks and three days. He landed in New York where he worked a few years. He then worked the levies in Memphis, Tennessee, and also on the Gulf of Mexico. He then went to Edgerton, Wisconsin, where he spent 24 years. He was married to Miss Mary Pendergast forty-one years ago next May, in New York. To this union were born six children – John who died seven years ago next April, Patrick jr., who lives on a farm of his own not far from the parent’s home, Mary, Mrs. Frank Trullinger of Orange township, Gutherie county, Maggie, Mrs. John Christy, near Ralston, Annie, Mrs. James Christy, north of town, and Katie, at home with the mother. The funeral services were held in the Catholic church of this city, Wednesday at 10:30, Rev. Father McCauliffe, took for his text “Si quaries monumentum respice” – If you seek a monument look around – an epitaph on a plain stone monument in West Minister Abbey, over the grave of one who could have an elegant monument of marble but who chose a plane slab of stone and these words. The silent form in that grave had built grand monuments to those of his family gone before. And Father McCauliffe likened the deceased Patrick Doran to this man. Mr. Doran came here in early days and put his time and energy to work to assist in the development of this new country. When Catholics in this vicinity were few and far between Mr. Doran as a pioneer to church work as well as development of the country worked for the founding of St. Mary’s Church of Coon Rapids. It was some 19 years ago when the first step was taken. When men shook their heads and class their efforts as fruitless. But Mr. Doran and Mr. Devine, living west of town, worked and to their devotion and energy with the assistance of faithful work, laid the foundation for what is now the prosperous church for Catholicism of our community. His duties as father and citizen were as faithfully attended to and the character of his children, men and women grown, and his good name among neighbors testify to his earnestness in these duties. The pall bearers who carried the remains of the kind friend, loving husband and trusting father, to the last resting place in the silent city of the dead were C. O’Neill, P. and T. Carroll, Tom Greenan, M. Moylan and Jas. McKeon. Considering the day it was a large number of mourning friends who met in the church and followed the remains to the grave, paying last respects to the aged man laid to his final rest. Source: Unknown newspaper obituary, probably from Coon Rapids, Iowa. Date abt January 1901/1902 Note: Contrary to this text, Mary Pendergast was the step-mother of John Doran. All spelling and punctuation as originally published. Patrick Doran Sr. is my gr gr grandfather

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Gk.2ADI/343.1.1 Message Board Post: It would be a very slim chance of ever finding Duncan Barr's child, not knowing the name of either the child or mother. I've talked to people at the courthouse in Carroll County, IA and I don't think I could ever access the records for either illegitimate or adoped children because I am not a close enough relative. (Duncan was my great-great uncle.) I have tried to find more information but my only clue now is a glass negative of a baby called Peter Barr baby at Hartington, NE, where Duncan lived. I need to check more census information to rule out another Barr family in the area (I don't believe there was.) I'm filing your email and will respond again if I learn anything there. In the meantime, I'd appreciate hearing more of your findings. Jean

I am unsure if my story is related to yours but I have missing-links which are tough to figure out from back in the old days. My story (I'll try to keep it short and simple for now) unless I here back from you. My dad's mom is (was) a Manning (Margaret) I could never trace her side of the family because my dad finally recently told me her dad was "adopted?" Melvin Manning and Nell O'Conner were her folks. (or it was his grand-dad who was adoped. (uncertain of true story) I was the only person in my family interested enouph to keep searching. I have found very neat relatives in Portand, OR and my dad finally got a picture of his dad for the first time in his life. He almost cried. Anyway. Milvin Manning's folks were John Geo Manning and Anna Teresa Gillholy. That is where my story ends onl my father's side. He still lives in Fort Dodge, IA. I remember going to Manning as a child. He said his grandad had a apple-orchard out side of Fort Dodge, Iowa and we have more relatives in the area. I now live in Chandler, Arizona. My family is still in Fort Dodge and the area. Do any of these names sound like relatives of yours??? Ms Kris Durschmidt My dad is Randal Durschmidt Please respond if possible.

I noticed the name of Catherine Huelshorst. According to my info she was born in Germany and died on March 23, 1948 and was married to a Bernard Herman Bueltel who died on March 21, 1949. The kids names for them were John, William, Henry, and Maggie. That info is different than the fact that you say Catherine was married to a Joseph. My grandfather was a Joseph Peter born on May 29, 1888 in Templeton and died on September 9, 1963 in Dedham, IA. He was married to an Elizabeth Rahm. Don't know if this is any help or not. Thanks.

    3. I've recently received some newspaper articles from a Cedar County, NE newspaper telling me that an ancestor of mine, Duncan Barr, was the proprietor of a "bar", also referred to as a "resort" in the Carroll to Manning area of Carroll County. Supposedly he did quite well in the business until Prohibition came along and he then spent all his money fighting the Prohibition laws. After losing everything, he moved on to Hartington, Nebraska where he was a very popular man, doing odd jobs, etc. He died owning a large home with money in the bank, so he must have done pretty well at the "odd jobs". In his will, he asked that his son be found to share in his estate. The son was born at Manning in the late 1870s or early 1880s. He did not marry his son's mother. Any information on the above would be appreciated. Duncan was, by some accounts, the Black Sheep of the family. I suppose that's why finding each bit of information is so interesting! Jean

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Gk.2ADI/1104.1 Message Board Post: Manning, Iowa is in Carroll County. I don't know what you mean when you say that you found it in Warren County in the 1920 census. Warren County is southeast of Des Moines - a hundred plus miles from Carroll County. Ancestry.com has no index for either the 1910 or the 1920 census. While the images are available, finding anything without knowing the page or image number is pretty time-consuming. Unfortunately, the 1910 census was only indexed for 21 states by the US Government and Iowa was not one of the 21. No-one else has indexed the entire census, but you might find local indexes. You may be faced with trying to find the enumeration district(s) of interest to localize your search. I checked at Ancestry.com and they have a spelling error that may have confused you. If you go to the 1910 census and then Iowa and then Carroll County, you are given a list of Enumeration Districts. One of them is spelled "Minning". This is a mis-type. It really is Manning Town. It is Enumeration District 59. Once there, you are faced with a page-by-page search. Good luck.
