Are there any listers willing to do lookups? I am trying to locate any information about Denis GLEASON, who is my great-grandfather. Apparently he died in 1872, either in Maryland or in Iowa. He married my great-grandmother Mary McGann Conley in Maryland in 1867, and my grandmother Eliza Jane Gleason Kennebeck was born in Pennsylvnia in 1868. The Conley family moved west to Carroll Co. about (?) 1872. Any information would be appreciated. Marv Kennebeck Orlando, FL

"Justin CHURCHILL, a successful and enterprising agriculturist residing on section 3, Union township, is the owner of three hundred and twenty acres of well improved and valuable land. His birth occurred in Ogle county, Illinois, on the 5th of April, 1846, his parents being Thomas C. and Aurelia (Woodard) CHURCHILL, who were natives of Ohio and Vermont respectively. His great-grandfather on the paternal side participated in the Revolutionary War. The grandfather, Samuel Churchill, was a native of New York and a farmer by occupation. Unto him and his wife were born twelve children, including Samuel, Asa, Truman, Anna, Thomas C., Mehitable and Laura. The maternal grandfather of our subject was born in Vermont and also followed farming as a life work. His demise occurred in Ohio but his wife passed away in Vermont in early womanhood. They had eleven children, including Wilson, Abraham, Lester, Patty, Aurelia and Jane. Thomas C. CHURCHILL, the father of Justin Churchill, was a physician by profession. He was reared in the Buckeye state and in early manhood removed to Chicago, Illinois, where he conducted a drug store and practiced medicine. Subsequently he took up his abode in Ogle county, Illinois, and in 1854 came to Iowa, settling in Calamus, Clinton county, where he also conducted a drug store and practiced his profession. In 1876 he came to Carroll county, invested in land and lived retired in Union township until called to his final rest on the 14th of August 1888 when seventy one years of age. His wife passed away in 1891, when she had attained the age of sixty-five years, dying in the faith of the First Day Adventist church. They were the parents of four children, two of whom died in early life. Mariette became the wife of S. T. ALGER, but is now deceased. Justin Churchill, whose name introduces this review, was a lad of eight years when he came to Iowa with his parents and was reared to manhood in Calamus, Clinton county, attending public schools in the acquirement of an education. In 1863 he enlisted for service in the Union army as a member of Company L, Seventh Iowa Cavalry, acting as a scout until about April 10, 1866. He participated in the engagements at Battle Mountain and Whitestone Hill and also took part in many skirmishes. He had enlisted for service with the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry but his company was transferred to the Seventh Iowa Cavalry and sent to the western frontier. After the cessation of hostilities Mr. CHURCHILL was engaged in the grain and hay business at Calamus for one year. In 1875 he came to Carroll county and located on the farm in Union township where he now resides, first purchasing ninety-one and a half acres. Since that time he has augmented his holdings by additional purchase until they now embrace three hundred and twenty acres of rich and productive land. His undertakings as an agriculturist have been attended with a gratifying measure of success and he has long been numbered among the prosperous and representative citizens of the community. On the 22nd of November, 1869, Mr. Churchill was united in marriage to Miss Frances ALLISON, who was born in Rockingham county, Virginia on 5th October 1849, her parents being David and Elizabeth (Christ) ALLISON, natives of Virginia. Her paternal grandparents, Robert and Adessa ALLISON, were likewise born in the Old Dominion. The maternal grandfather, whose birth also occurred in Virginia, was a farmer by occupation. Unto him and his wife were born a number of children, two of whom are yet living, namely: Thomas, a resident of Ohio; and Susan, who makes her home in the Old Dominion. David Allison, the father of Mrs. Churchill, died in Clinton county, Iowa when seventy-two years of age, while his wife there passed away at the age of eighty-eight. They had fourteen children, seven of whom yet survive, namely: Sarah, Catharine, Susan, Frances, George, David and Robert. Unto our subject and his wife have been born six children. Thomas, an engineer of Sioux City, Iowa, wedded MIss Mary Kaneen, by whom he has a daughter, Orpha May. Frank is still at home. Harry, residing at Coon Rapids, Iowa married Miss Alpha Blanchard and has a son, Kenneth. He served in the regular army for fours visiting the eastern hemisphere on the flagship Kearsarge. Ray, who lives on a part of the old homestead farm, wedded Miss Grace Kulp, by whom he has three children: Merle, Bernice and Justin Francis. Luella is the wife of Henry Schultz and the mother of two sons and a daugher, Harry, Donald and Francis Irene. Anna passed away at the age of eighteen months. Mr. Churchill gives his political allegiance to the republican party, believing that its principles are most conducive to good government. He is identified with the Grand Army of the Republic and is also a worthy exemplar of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Charity Lodge, A. F. & A. M. at Coon Rapids. and Copestone Chapter No. 78, R. A. M. at Carroll. In whatever relation of life we find him - in business or in social circles - he is always the same honorable gentleman whose worth well merits the high regard which is uniformly given him". ---end---- Note by Mary K. Ward, 1432 Yeardley Drive, Richmond, VA 23225. This bio has a few errors. Justin CHURCHILL's maternal grandfather (ie. Aurelia WOODARD's father) was Abiram WOODARD born 1773 in Woodbury, Litchfield co, CT and he died at age 93 in 1866 in Munson, Geauga co, OH where he had lived for about 30 years. Abiram Woodard married 10 Aug 1801 in Sandgate, Bennington co, VT Dinah GREEN born in 181 wife was Dinah GREEN b 1783 in RI she died at age 67 on 26 Mar 1850. All of Abiram and Dinah (Green) WOODARD's 12 or 13 children were born in Vermont. Then, about 1835 the Abiram WOODARD family moved from Vermont to Geauga co, OH where Abiram & Dinah WOODARD both died; they are both buried in Fowler's Mill Cemetery, Munson, Geauga co, OH. Thus Dinah (Green) WOODARD did not die young in Vermont. I think one of her's and Abiram's their son's was not Lester -but Wm. Chester Woodard; and maybe Patty a nickname for their daughter, Martha WOODARD. Their son Abram WOODARD was ! aka Abraham. And their son Wilson WOODARD was my gr-gr-grandfather.

I'm looking for any information about my great-grandfather Denis Gleason. Here's the information I have so far: My great-grandmother was Mary McGann, born abt 1828 in Ireland and emigrated to the USA about 1848. She was accompanied by her sister Kate. She married James Patrick Conley in Baltimore, MD, and they had six children as follows: Catherine (Kate) born 1850 in PA, Michael born 1852 in PA, John (Jack) born 1854 in MD, James (Jim) born 1857 in MD, Martin born 1859 in MD, Mary Ann (Daley) born 1861 in MD, and Frank born 1864 in MD. James Patrick Conley died in 1865 in MD, and Mary McGann Conley then married Denis Gleason in 1867 in Harford Co. MD. My grandmother Eliza Gleason (Kennebeck) was born in PA on 6 Feb 1868. Mary McGann Conley Gleason moved the family west to Carroll County abt 1872, and reverted to the Conley surname. Catherine (Kate) Conley Gleason was married to John Gleason, and as a widow lived in or near Danbury Iowa abt. 1920. (John may have been a brother, son or cousin of Denis???) The unknown in this equation is the PLACE of death of Denis Gleason in 1872. He may have come west with the family and died in Iowa or he may have died in MD??? In the marriage record of my grandfather George Kennebeck and my grandmother in 1887, the father of the bride was listed as Denis CONLEY...the priest may have done this accidently. Can any listers help me out? Marv Kennebeck Orlando FL
Dear Listmembers, I am new to this listserve so I do not know if this has been discussed recently. Has anyone ever attempted to locate the negatives or other items from Rohner Photography which operated in Carroll. I am not sure of the exact dates it was in business, but I believe it was late 1800's to early 1900's. I know many of my old family photos were taken there, and probably hundreds of other people's as well. I was wondering if anyone knows if the negatives or other prints are still in existence and, if so, where they are located. Thanks for any info.--Dave Reineke
Dear Listmembers, The old German newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" was published by Pastor L. Hündling [Huendling} in 1882 in Iowa as a connecting paper between the people in the new American settlements and die old homeland with news and events in Ostfriesland and the "New World". Later you could find this newspaper all over the U.S. and Ostfriesland. For the period between 1882 and 1915 the issues were microfilmed around 20 - 30 years ago. According to a descendant of Pastor Huendling about 10 years ago, most of the issues between 1916 and 1971 got lost on the way to a processing center to be microfilmed. Besides Rev. Kenneth DeWall and others, who published in the past some indexes of (only) obituaries, we started in 1997 reading each newspaper for 1882 - 1915 and 1916 - 1971 (single issues) from the front to the back and taking all of the personal data in obituaries and local news into computer files. We added also interesting stories about the events in the New World - especially for the German readers -. So far we have listed 10,300 names of deceased between 1882 and 1915 plus 12,300 names of relatives, and until 1971 only 2,000 deceased / 5,000 relatives. Now we are looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971. The undersigned would appreciate your answer if you have access to those issues. Thank you very much in advance for your help in preserving the data. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken Ostfriesland-Society of Iowa, Inc.
