The deceased was a man of rugged character possessing much fearlessness in political and other public affairs. He began as a Whig and became a Republican at the birth of the party. Even in his old age, he kept his interest alive in political affairs of the county. He was what could be termed a Simon pure Republican; a strong protectionist and in all elections, a steadfast friend of his party. He was quite prominent in party councils in his younger and more active years, being a familiar figure at county and state conventions. He also had a liking for law and was a justice of the peace for several terms and could make a good plea in the local courts. Had he been educated in law he would no doubt have made his impression upon the bar of his locality. He had decided opinions as the right and wro! ng of things and little patience with compromise. He was a man of high honor, a good neighbor and faithful friend and will be missed from the community. Thomas Foxworthy was born in Clark County, Kentucky, April 4, 1823, died at his home in Carroll County, Iowa, June 2, 1907, at 8 a.m., aged 84 years, 1 month, 28 days. His parents came to Montgomery County, Indiana, and settled near Ladoga, in the fall of 1828, where they cleared a farm from the forest, and where the subject of the sketch grew to manhood. He removed to Wayne County, Iowa, in 1872, from there to Carroll County in 1877, where he resided until his death. Thomas Foxworthy was married to Elizabeth Conklin, January 16, 1855 in Greencastle, Indiana. To this union were born eleven children, one of which died in infancy and another, Mrs Emmet Pyle, in December, 1902. Those that survive him are: Mrs James Ruark, Mrs E M Nelson, Mrs O W Pyle and Mrs Herbert McLain of Ralston, Iowa, William Foxworthy of Glidden, Iowa, Daniel Foxworthy, John Foxworthy, Mrs A W Graves of Coon Rapids, Iowa and Rev. Theo. Foxworthy of Bloomfield, Nebraska. The deceased was converted at the age of seventeen years and united with the Baptist Church where he labored with that organization until a few years ago when he united with the Friends, remaining a consistent worker until his death. The funeral was conducted at the Friends Church, Tuesday morning by Rev. Abbie Lake, assisted by Rev. Harned. A large number of friends and neighbors assembled to pay their last respects to the departed, after which the remains were interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Coon Rapids, Iowa. (JS)

Daniel T Foxworthy died Tuesday evening at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr and Mrs A W Graves. His demise was not unexpected since he had been in failing health from anemia for sometime and bedfast for several weeks. He was given every attention possible, and treated by doctors at home and Lake City, but without success, save to prolong his life a few days. He was brought to town from his country home so that he could be daily and hourly under the care of a physician. He was cheerful through his affliction, and while he said he was making the best fight he could for his life, yet if it had really come to his time to pass out of this life, he had no complaint, and would accept the inevitable with complete resignation. His family and near relatives were with him during his last hours. The deceased came to Iowa from Indiana, his native state, with his parents, Mr and Mrs Thomas Foxworthy, when a young man. He grew to manhood north of town where his father owned a farm, and where the deceased by industry and good management, with the help of his wife, accumulated a good share of his world's goods. He was a social man, a good neighbor and honorable in his business dealings. He was a farmer. Funeral services were held yesterday from the M.E. Church, Rev. H G Hicks, assisted by the pastor of the Friends Church, conducting them in the presence of a large audience. The remains were interred in the Coon Rapids cemetery. (JS) The following obituary was kindly furnished to us by a relative. (JS) After a lingering illness of more than eight months, Daniel T Foxworthy passed away Tuesday evening. Sometime in December, his health began to fail but it was not until the latter part of April that his condition was thought to be of a serious nature. Early in May, he was taken to the hospital at Carroll for special treatment, being examined by specialists, it was found that the disease of Pernicious Anemia had fastened itself upon him. For a time his health seemed to improve and for several weeks during the summer he was able to move about the house and to visit amongst his friends and relatives. Eight weeks ago he again became bedfast and was brought to the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr and Mrs A W Graves, of Coon Rapids, that he might be near the attending physician. Everything was done that could be to restore him to health but with all that human hands could do it seemed impossible to successfully combat the disease. Daniel T Foxworthy was born near Greencastle, Indiana, February 11, 1866, and died at Coon Rapids, Iowa, November 1, 1921. When a boy of 6 years, he came with his parents to Wayne County, Iowa. Five years later, they moved to Carroll County, Iowa, where he resided until his death. On January 30th, 1889, he was married to Evelyn M Thomas. To this union were born five children - Orville T, Beulah, and Nile T. Two other children died in infancy. Besides his companion, the three children, with four grand children and a host of friends and relatives, there remain to mourn his loss of the loved one, three brothers and five sisters are as follows: Mrs D Belle Ruark of Glidden, Iowa, William H of Scranton, Iowa, Mrs Emma J Graves of Coon Rapids, John L of Coon Rapids, Mrs Effie M Nelson, Mrs Hattie Pyle, Mrs Stella McLain, all three of Glidden and Theodore of Spiceland, Indiana. The father, mother, and a sister, Mrs Pearl Pyle preceded him in the departure of life. A few days before death came, he called his youngest brother, who is a minister, to his bedside, telling him that he could not get well. He then requested the brother to help him find the Savior. After the brother had talked with him and prayed, Daniel prayed earnestly, asking the Lord to forgive him, save him and help him to find the way. In conversation with one of his sisters the next day, he told her that he had asked for help and felt ready to go. (JS)

The Crabbs family were in the south but were not in favor of slavery. Some of the memories of the days of the Civil War were vivid in Mrs. Gibson's mind. At the time of the outbreak of the war the family was living on property belonging to General Lee, the Arlington estate, now the site of the Arlington Cemetery. Her father was the miller on this estate. Mrs. Gibson remembered the sound of the first guns of the battle of Bull Run, and many experiences with the soldiers from those days. Her father was taken prisoner by the Rebel army because of some cadet uniforms found in his home, and during his imprisonment met exposure which he could not endure, not being a strong man, and so his death followed. The three! older children, including Mrs. Gibson, went to relatives near Harrisburg, Penna., to live. Late in the '60s she came to Carroll county, Iowa, settling near Carrollton. In 1869, she was united in marriage to George N. Young. To this union three children were born. One died in infancy and the surviving are A. J. In 1875 the family moved to a farm east of Scranton where they resided about six years, when they returned to Carrollton and two years later to Dedham, Iowa. Then about 1917 they came back to Scranton, which has since been her home. In 1924 Mr. Gibson passed to the life beyond. Mrs. Gibson continued to live in Scra! nton until 1935 when she went to make her home with her daughter at Roland, where the end came. Mrs. Gibson was active in church and Sunday school work from young womanhood until age and failing health made it impossible. The children remember both their parents as devoted and treasure the ideals and standards they inherited from them. She leaves to mourn her passing, the three daughters and one son mentioned above, one step-daughter, thirty grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was born in Ohio in 1848. When a small child she moved with her parents by river steamboat to Lee county. When a young woman she came to Carroll county ,coming over land in a wagon drawn by oxen. Being a young woman of industrious habits she worked for sometime in the home of some early settlers near Old Carrollton. Mrs. John Hupp,( Narcissus Sigler) who with her husband still lives near the Old Carrollton store, loves to tell of pleasant associations had with Frances Knight in her early girlhood. In the fall of 1865 she was married to Wm. Hupp. She always worked hard ,giving her whole life in the care of her large family of ten children ,doing her best in the hard circumstances of pioneer life. Five of herchildren and her husband preceeded her in the great beyond, the five children dying in infancy, and her husband about thirteen years ago. The children living are four boys- Frank, Dan, Dora, and George, all near Coon Rapids, and one daughter, Mrs. Matilda Fay, who is living in the state of Washington. Hupp who died last week in her ninety fifth year, lived over the most remarkable portion of the nation's history and is therefore a life that is very interesting to review. She was born in West Virginiain 1804 when the state was somewhat wild, removing to Ohio six years later where she lived for two years in a fort; that state at the time being on the frontier, the home of the Indians from whom the frontiersmen suffered greatly. A little later she moved to Monroe County Ohio, with her parents, where she helped her father clear up a farm, using an axe and felling trees with a dexterity equal to that of the men. At the age of eighteen she was married to Rev. John Hupp and with him moved to Clinton County, Iowa in 1852 and in 1863 to Carroll County where her husband died in 1872. Being a minister all his life, many ofthe older residents of the county hearing him preach. She never remarried, remaining in the county with her children, the most of the time residing with Mr. and Mrs. Cephus Parker. She retained full possession of her mental power up until the last day of her life, the day before her death recalling many incidents that happened in West Virginia when she was but five or six years old. Her sight and hearing, however, was considerably impaired, yet she could move about the house and to some extent wait upon herself. She was the mother of fourteen children, seven girls and seven boys, six of whom, five boys and one girl being dead, the living being as follows: Mrs. Julia A. Prettyman of Butte City NE, mother of John and William, Mrs Rhoda A Smith of Minneapolis Minn; Mrs Rachel Linton of Norma Okla, mother of John W. Linton; Mrs. Maria J. Carmickael of Butte City, Nebr ,mother of Mrs O. W. Carpenter; Mrs Sephus Parker of Coon Rapids; Mrs Mary H. Holding of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; and Daniel and W.H. Hupp of Coon Rapids. The deceased are Sarah Jane, George, Nathan, Isaac, John, and Henery, the latter two dying in the army. Henry at Cario Ill of typhoid fever. John being killed in the battle on Lookout Mountain, the other three boys she gave to the war returning home. She was the grandmother of 65 children, 46 whom are living, was the great grandmother of 156, 135 of whom are living, and the great great grandmother of 15, 10 who are living. She joined the ME Church at the age of 17, being a member 78 years probably the oldest member in the state. She lived under all presidents of the United States except Washingtion and before the discovery of telegraphy, the use of steam boats and railroads in the United States.Long before Howe invented the sewing machine, before harvesters and mowers, etc. She lived when Aaron Burr committed conspiracy, when Commodor Perry fought the battle of Lake Erie, during the capture and burning of Washington, the battle of Tippacanoe, New Orleans, theBlackhawk War, War with Mexico, and the admission into the Union of al lthe middle and western states, also most all the northern and southern states, there being but 13 states in the Union when she was born. What a privalege it was to live through those stirring times, this great history making epock, and yet the hardships endured, and the hard labo rperformed throught the lack of all the labor saving inventions during this period was such that the present generation would not care to endure. (she died 13 Mar 1899 I do not know where this was written ) This is my 4th great grandmother
