Surnames: Mowder, Farmer, Sigler Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Gk.2ADI/1330 Message Board Post: I found this on the Mowder site: There is an absolutely wonderful 1904 photo of deeply-patriotic Matson Mowder, age 90, seated before the flag, on pg. 216 of the July-Aug 1987 issue of "The Genealogical Helper" magazine. This gentleman was born 10 June 1814 in Steubenville, OH and died 08 Sept 1908 in Coon Rapids, IA. His adventurous life began at age 18 as a Bowsman on the Ohio Canal from Cleveland to Portsmouth. Later he made trips on a flat boat down the Mississippi from Cincinnati and Louisville to New Orleans. Then as a married man with a family, he operated a brickyard in Lee Co., IA, later taking up farming in Clinton, IA. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in 1861, giving a younger age so he could join. Two of his sons, James and William Henry, also served from Clinton Co. In 1871, the Mowder family moved by covered wagon to Carroll Co., IA. Matson was a member and Color Bearer of Perry Wright Post #188 and Drum Corps of Coon Rapids, IA. He possessed a deep patriotic spirit and loved the "Old! Flag" dearly. Every Saturday afternoon for years when the band played on the streets, he was on hand to carry the "Old Flag." His great age and bent form and tender devotion to the colors as well as his deep loyalty to his country made a touching and inspiring sight, per a family member. He was the second oldest living veteran of the Civil War in IA and lived into his 95th year. His photo was submitted by a great-granddaughter, A. Farmer, Minneapolis, MN. Please reference that issue for more details. =============== I know he is the father of Susan Mowder married to John Whtezel Sigler. Does anyone have any other info, or access to this article?
