I don't have any information on them. Eleanor was my grandmother's sister. I believe they lived in Illinois (possibly Chicago) . They had four children I believe, Darlene, Diane, Robert and Dennis. I am researching the Wabschall family and would like to find lost "cousins". Eleanor may have been born around 1919 in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin. Thanks Paula
Ron, I searched a 1901 Calhoun Co. map that shows the land owners. I didn't find a Jaames VANCE, but there were a Henry in Section 6 of Union Twp. and a Hiram in Section 31 of Logan Twp. They were just across the road from each other. -- Don & Carmen (Pickering) Huling <dhuling@gte.net> Kent, WA, USA Researching: HULING from Suffolk, Engl-1619 PICKERING from Kirkham, , Engl~1750 WILSON from Lincs, Engl~1735 McV(A/E)Y from Scotland~1690 CUMMINS from Lancaster Co, PA~1785 WOOD from Engl-1824 STEPHENSON from EYK, Engl~1750 BRYSON from Lancaster Co, PA-1790 > From: IACALHOU-D-request@rootsweb.com > Reply-To: IACALHOU-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 6 Dec 2002 04:01:22 -0700 > To: IACALHOU-D@rootsweb.com > Subject: IACALHOU-D Digest V02 #96 > > > IACALHOU-D Digest Volume 02 : Issue 96 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [IACALHOUN] Land lookup please? I'm looking for any information on J.K. McCormick and his wife Lillie. My only reference point is a May 1896 deed in Bracken Co., Ky. wherein Lillie McCormick and her husband J.K. of Lake City, Calhoun Co., Iowa sold property in Bracken Co. to WKR Merkley. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Art Miller, Louisville

Robert Johnston married Estella Mae Hulett in 1893 and I have recorded she is from Owen Co, Indiana. I believe Angeline and Estella were daughters of Sarah Jane Fiscus which I noticed as the third surname in your list. I am wondering if you might have further information on any of the above three families. Thank you for any assistance. norm norm_frog@yahoo.com

I suspect the Miller was actually Muller with the two dots over the "u". In German this is called an umlaut and changes the sound of the vowel "u" to something closer to the sound "meh" or "myeh". It's hard to describe it, much easier to say it. In old script it would easily be mistaken for a double "i". The name would begin to sound more like Mule-er, or Meh-ler, depending on the part of Germany it came from, giving rise to Miller and Muller. In some areas of Germany the name would be spelled Moeller, with the umlaut over the "O" which would sound like Meh-ler, becoming Miller or in some areas Moy-ler. I hope that helps some. I love the derivation of names and words and German was my very favorite language in school. Must have been my Prussian 2great-grandmother who married my English 2great-grandfather and lived near Manson, eh? Anyone out there with any Winter or Krohn/e ancestors? Krohn would have been pronounced Crone/Crona, Kruhn/Kruhna, depending on whether an umlaut was used or not.

First my apologies for the duplication on this message. It's on the other Calhoun Co. board. I had forgotten most of these boards gateway to the mailing lists. And I really should wait until my list subscription is activated, but I just CAN'T, because I just located a family on the 1881 census in England that has almost all of the children (with birth dates within acceptable parameters if not spot on) mentioned in William's obit below, plus a servant whose last name is Todd, the same as William's surviving daughter. This is the information I posted earlier today: My Winter family immigrated from England to the US in 1882 or 1883. I don't know the point of entry but they were on the Calhoun Co. census in Manson in 1900: Lincoln Township, Manson, page 84A William Winter head, W, M, July 1833, 66, England Jane, wife, W, F, Mar 1836, 64, England (I believe this couple to be the parents of my great-grandfather who is nearby in Logan Township with brother Herbert, although I have no concrete proof) My great-grandfather's death record indicates his mother's maiden name was Ayre. My Great-grandparents: Calhoun Co., Logan Township, sheet 12B Winter, Thomas head, W, M, Dec 1876, 23, England Annie M., wife, W, F, Aug 1873, 26, Wisconsin Hattie M., daughter, W, F, Dec 1898, 1,IA (Thomas' death certificate shows year of birth to be 1875. Annie is actually Anna Marie nee Krohn(e)and her birth date was 22 Aug 1868. She got progressively younger over the years! Hattie is a child none of us knew about. Both Thomas and Anna die in CA, as do their other two children born after this census, Edna Luella and my Grandpa, George William.) Winter, Herbert, head, W, M, Sep 1873, 26, England Minnie F., wife, W, F, Oct 1876, 23, Wisconsin George R., son, W, M, May 1897, 3, Iowa (This is Thomas' brother and, although I have no concrete proof, I believe Minnie to be my great-grandma's younger sister, all information matches her.) I find only Herbert on the 1910, so far, and he is in Carroll Co. In 1920 William and Herbert are both there, close together again in Carroll Co. The census indicates arrival in the US as 1883 for William and 1882 for Thomas and Herbert, but I believe they all came together. All three men are naturalized. William's date of birth is 26 Jul 1832 according to his cemetery records, death 12 Aug 1908, buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson. Survivors are: George, James, John, Thomas, Willia, Herbert sons, daughter Anna Todd. His wife is not mentioned. This is an abstracted obit from the Manson Journal 19 Aug 1908. William Henry Winter, who I believe is his son, born 12 Nov 1871, England, died Oct 1908 in Mandan ND, buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Manson. Survivors: wife Luella Ebersole, daughter Annie Laddie, children George, Sarah, John, James, Mary, Herbert, Nellie. Abstracted obit from Manson Journal 21 Oct 1908. Is anyone familiar with this family? Does anyone have access to copies of the Manson Journal that would be willing to look up these obits and copy them or do a transcription? I am about positive these are my people, but need the paper proof to be sure. If any of their descendants are in the area still, I would truly love to contact you. They never talked much about their families, so we know very little about them. I would love to discover when and where the Winters arrived and from what part of England. The Krohn sisters' family was from Prussia and I need to get a handle on them as well. There is a possibility that Anna was in fact born in Prussia, not Wisconsin (maybe that's why she wouldn't talk about her family, something about being afraid of being sent back to Germany!) The census record I find for her father cannot be her father. The name is right, but the wife and family are those of a man that I believe to be his brother. The Krohns were in Iowa County, Wisconsin, Pulaski Township,Avoca Village from 1880-1900 or there abouts. They indicate arrival in the US around 1858, but all evidence points to arrival around 1870-72. Parents of Anna and Minnie are said to be Christian Krohn and Friedricke Redmann. Christian appears on the 1860 census in Wisconsin, but the data does not match him at all, while the family is definitely that of John Krohn who I believe to be his brother. I think John came with his own family but under his brother's name and established residency for both families to get them all out of Prussia, with Christian and his family coming later. Can anyone tell me where the naturalization papers might be for Calhoun Co. for 1883-1900? Can anyone help, please, to fill in my gaps? I will be happy to share all the information I have found. Many thanks in advance. Susan.

I travel to Iowa about 4 or 5 times a year, since I have a lot of other family there(Regis and Horner, the Prichetts seem to have died out) in the Des Moines and Polk City area. Bret Regis
