Can you please look at the following informaiton and see if recognize anyone? Many thanks in advance! Many thanks, Gary. I'll have our genealogy librarian order them up. I know that William and Jane Winter lived in Manson on the 1900 census. He is showing as a naturalized citizen, she is not. In fact, I found NONE of my female immigrant ancestors were ever naturalized! I did a line by line search in 1910 and did not find them. I didn't find my greatgrandparents either, but I know they were there. I have them on 1900 and 1920, just got to look harder for 1910. Maybe Ancestry will have it indexed soon. THAT would be lovely. They left there between 1920-1930 when I find them in Alhambra, CA. My grandparents were married shortly after that an my mother was born in Monterey Park in 1936. I just don't know which daughter went by Annie rather than her given name. I haven't gotten hold of the civil registry records yet. William Vickers may also be a husband to one of the daughters at some later point. Sarah must be Sarah Jane and her maidenname is Ayre/Eyre per Thomas K. Winter's death records. I have extracted records on her family. If the research holds, and I'm not sure it will but has so far, her line was raised to the aristocracy by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 in gratitude for a knight saving his life. The James mentioned below appears to be an older son not at home on the 1881 census, but I have not really looked any farther for him. This family must have had considerable wealth to transport all of them at the same time. I haven't yet found the ship's list they were on, but it's there somewhere. I'm sending for the naturalization papers and that should tell. What is the world comming too? When I grew up in Calhoun Co. in the 40's and 50's, we had so much snow I had to walk home from the highway as they couldn't keep the gravel roads plowed. Recently we seem to have a tropical wave. Here is a description of the winters I remember: February 3, 1909 - Manson Journal An Iowa Blizzard -"During Thursday night, Friday and Saturday, Iowa was in the grasp of an old time "blizzard". During the ten days previous, it had been unusually warm, too warm for comfort. The humid breezes blowing to the north finally struck a counter current or something else, and in a few hours, a wind swept over Iowa with a velocity of about 50 miles per hour. There was just enough snow to fill the air and also to cause it to drift. The snow was driven with such a velocity that it packed as hard as rock and while the railroads did not experience such a thing as a blockade, the hard snow caused the wheels to run over and leave the track. The whole line of the Central from Dubuque to Sioux City was filled with trains in this condition and luckily there were but few lives lost. The trainmen ran their trains so carefully that they avoided most of what would have been serious accidents. Saturday there was no mail at all. While the storm was severe and at times dangerous even to go a few rods from your door, without sufficient guide, no serious results have been reported in this vicinity.
I have a photo of the teacher and kids attending Lincoln Twp School #8. Could someone tell me what section that was in? I would like to be able to put it on the county web page. >From the 1901 platt map, I can determine a good guess of some of the families that would be on the picture. Perhaps someone will recognize one of their parents or grandparents. Gary Ramthun

I located your Josephine in the 1900 census living with her mother, surnamed Ross and a half-sib surnamed Bennett (I believe) and her grandmother Ross. Jospehine's mother is head of household. Jospehine is listed as Josephene Foley, but I'm sure it must be the same one. I don't have the notes right here, but when my son goes down fofr his nap, I'll get you the information. I have also pulled all the Fowlie, Clark and Griffin census entries for Calhoun Co. and looking at Griffith since I didn't find your Griffin under this spelling. Perhaps it is misspelled like Josephine is. It would appear that all the Fowlies are kin of some sort as they all have origins in Scotland. I was privileged to live in Briatain for 5 years and the Scots are very family oriented, so that doesn't surprise me. I also have some Canadian entries, too which I am fairly certain are yours. Back to you soon. Susan
