S. Fleck After several months of illness Mrs. W. S. Fleck passed away at her home in Lake City (Calhoun Co., IA) last Thursday night. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon conducted by Dr. M. D. Bush. Mrs. D. W. McCrary, Mrs. M. D. Bush, Dr. W. E. McCrary and Mr. F. W. Newendorp sang, accompanied by Mrs. R. H. Cain. The pall bearers were J. W. hanks, J. T. Puckett, L. H. Clow, Walter Jacobs, W. S. DeLong and James Keary. Burial was in the Lake City cemetery. Rachel Ann, the third child in a family of eight children, was born to John L. and Rachel Ann (Taylor) Andre, Dec. 13, 1852, near Salem, Ohio, and died in Lake City January 21, 1926, aged 73 years. When she was twelve the family moved to Scott county, near Big Rock, Iowa. There she grew to womanhood, when she was wooed and won by W. S. Fleck, a Civil War veteran, to whom she was married Sept. 20, 1874, and they have joyfully traveled the way of life together for more than fifty-one years. One child, a son, Charles William Fleck, came into this home. He is now married and lives in Portland, Oregon, and in his home there are two sons, Harold and Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Fleck resided in Scott County for eight years when in 1882 they came to Calhoun County locating on their farm northwest of Lake City. Here they lived and toiled together in the development of this part of the fair state of Iowa. The joined with their neighbors in supporting church services and Sunday school in a neighboring school house. In her younger life Mrs. Fleck aided much by singing and in teaching a class in Sunday school. A few years ago they moved to town. Mr. and Mrs. Fleck’s names appear on the old records of this Methodist church. Mrs. Fleck renewed her obligation here in April of last year. It was always a delight to converse with Mrs. Fleck for she had a keen and positive mind together with a happy, smiling face. It was a pleasure for her to do deeds of kindness and to support worthy causes. Many have been blessed, directly and indirectly, by her life and service. Many will miss her greatly, but none more than her devoted husband, for they were ever together. As her illness became critical, the son and his wife hastened from the Pacific coast and the sisters and brothers came from eastern Iowa to be at the bedside of their beloved as she went home to her mother and her God. And so, after days of suffering and some whispered “good-bys” she quietly at eleven o’clock last Thursday evening went “home where mother is.” She leaves her sorrowing husband and son, and two sisters and a brother: Mrs. Emaline Parker, Davenport; Mrs. Alberta Landstrum of New Sharon, and Frank Andre of Davenport. Also the following relatives were at the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. N. L. Clark, Des Moines; Mr. Willie Andre, Manilla; Mr. Frank McLeod, Iowa Falls; Mr. Perry Vanpelt and son Earl, Rochester, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Macklin, Mrs. Minnie Murson and Mr. David Davis of Schaller; Mrs. T. J. Andre and Mr. Oscar Youngstrom of Storm Lake; Mr. LeClair Owens of Rockwell City; Mr. George Taylor, Nemaha; Ross Fleming and family, Auburn. Card of Thanks: We wish to express our appreciation of the assistance shown by our neighbors and friends during the illness of our wife and mother and for the sympathy shown us in our bereavement. W. S. Fleck; C. W. Fleck and Wife (Clipping from unidentified newspaper)

I have found him in the 1885 Iowa census in Calhoun County, in the town of Lincoln, with his wife and first 4 children. His birth name is Longwell, but he is listed in the census as Louwell. Does anyone have any information on this family? His father was William M. Chase - born in New York, but died in Otho, Webster Co., Iowa. Thanks in advance for any help. --Debbie Chase --

Olof was married originally to Hanna Persdotter in Sweden. She died shortly after their immigration from Sweden to the US- iowa area in 1882. Olof was born November 4, 1825 in Sweden - so he would have been 75 at the date of his second marriage! I'm only assuming by the date that his second wife, Matilda would have been older and on her second marriage as well. I am Olof's great great great grandaughter! He was in the census of 1900 in Montgomery County, Iowa - in Stanton. So, he quickly moved up to Calhoun to be married. If anyone has any information about this family - or these people please contact me.
