I can tell you a bit of what I know - - The last name "CERVIN," derived in Sweden was a name they gave if you were in the army. So, your great grandfather's last name - or his father's - was probably something besides Cervin. I don't know if this is the same family - I will have to look at my family charts and notes. I do have a Sven Cervin on my side off the top of my head but he was married in Oregon. Now, Cervin, as a Swedish name is quite uncommmon. I can tell you that my Cervin's are from Skane Sweden which is the southernmost part of Sweden - straight east of Copenhagen, Denmark. Email me or message board

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Fk.2ADI/442.2 Message Board Post: Hello, Larry! I have been working on some other Clarks in Calhoun Co., so your query caught my eye. I saw Gary's post and noted that Charles did not appear, but that database has recently been updated: 1885 IA State Census (On-Line, updated) Calhoun Co., Lincoln Township, Manson Township Number: 89 Range: 31 Section: 17 Page 312, lines 14 – 18, residence 92 Clark, John, 48, M, married, born NY, H., 42, F, married, born Calhoun Co. Frank, 9, M, single, born IL (MY NOTE: This does not agree with Federal Census for birth place.) Here is the Federal Census data for Clarks that I believe may be yours: 1880 Sussex Co., VA, Henry Magisterial District, 15-16 June 1880, by Charles F. McChesney?, SD #1, ED #109, page 82, lines 11-16, residence 116, family 118 Clark, John W., head, M, W, 44, married, farmer, NY NY NY Harriett A., wife, F, W, 37, m, keeping house, NY NY NY Frederick R., son, M, W, 9, s, at school, IA NY NY Charles M., son, M, W, 6, s, at school, IA NY NY Frank E., son, M, W, 4, s, IA NY NY (MY NOTE: perhaps land records would indicate why they are in VA) 1870 Calhoun Co., IA, Lincoln Township, Yatesville P.O., 30 July 1870, by A. G. Kidder, page 15, lines 1-4, residence 88, family 91 Clark, John, 34, M, W, works on farm, NY Harriett, 27, F, W, keeping house, NY Alice, 13, F, W, NY, at school Della, 3, F, W, IA (MY NOTE: I suspect from this entry John was married before Harriett, unless she had a child at 13. I believe Della is probably Harriett’s child. Alice might have married by the 1880 census, but Della appears to have died young or is with some other family member for the 1880 census.) After finding the 1870 census I started looking for census records that might showm another marriage and for Harriett’s family. In a global search of census records, I could find no HUGGLELONE, but I found the following entry for Hugglebone that is a great possibility except that there is no daughter Harriet of the proper age, although she could have been missed or she went by a middle name. It is possible, given the order of these children, that Esther was actually not 12, as the enumerator listed all children in descending age order in the surrounding entries. It is interesting to note that the name Hugglebone appears only in two census years – 1850 and 1930 and nowhere in between. The 1930 entry is for Edward and Mary Hugglebone with their two children, Peter and Louise, in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY. This large gap leads me to believe it may be a corruption of the actual surname. With Mathias claiming PA as his birthplace, it makes this an even greater possibility since Allegany Co., is one of the border counties with PA. He may have been Dutch, French Huguenot, or German Palatinate in! origin with a PA location, or the birth location could be wrong (Harriett is shown with both parents born in NY on the 1880, but this could as easily be wrong as right, also). I am not saying these ARE your people, but they are at least a good place to begin looking as much of what is in the census matches with the census info above. 1850 Allegany Co., NY, Friendship Township, 2 Oct 1850, by E.B. Fisk, page 62B, lines 32-36, residence and family 224 Mathias Hugglebone, 54, M, farmer, real estate $1200, PA Marinda, 49, F, real estate $1200, CT Lasilda/Lasilla, 14, F, NY, at school Marinda,10, F, NY, at school Esther, 12, F, NY, at school Once I found this entry I located the following in Allegany Co. in the township next door to Mathias: 1850 Allegany Co., NY, Scio Township, 20 Aug 1850, by E. B. Fisk, page 104, lines 32-39, residence 200, family 201 Rowland Clark, 38, M, farmer, real estate $825, NY Eliza, 38, F, NY John, 16, M, NY (MY NOTE: This matches census data above), at school Doss, 13, M, NY, at school Martin, 10, M, NY, at school Mary A., 7, F, NY, at school Rosalpha, 5, F, NY, at school Edna, 2, F, NY 1860 Allegany Co., NY, Scio Township, 25, July 1860, by E.N. Please note, that Rowland Clark is below on the same page, four residences away, and John is no longer at home. I cannot be positive of this. If the age IS incorrect, then this is a good candidate for an earlier marriage for John Clark, as daughter Allice matches the 1870 census. Futher research would be needed to prove or disprove this.) Page 290, lines 19-25, residence and family 249 Rowland Clark, 48, M, farmer $1500, $400, NY Elizabeth, 48, F, NY Martin, 20, M, labourer, NY Mary A., 17, F, NY, at school Rosalpha, 15, F, NY, at school Edney, 12, F, NY, at school Manly, 9, M, NY, at school (MY NOTE: There is a Manley Clark on the 1880 census, search done on LDS site, that matches the Manly above and has a child in his household born in IA. While this, in itself, is only circumstantial, it is something to consider. Entry follows: 1880, Dodge Co., MN, Wasioja Township, 3-4 June 1880, by J.K. Fancher, SD #1, ED # 47, page 356B, lines 5-7, residence and family 31 Clark, Manley, head, M, W, 29, married, farmer, NY NY NY Sarah, wife, F, W, 28, m, keeping house, NY CAN CAN SAMMONS, Marvin, son, M, W, 10, IA, IL NY (MY NOTE: I suspect this is Step Son, but could also be adopted son) I also took a little tour through the archives at the Allegany Co., GenWeb site. While looking through the cemetery index, I happened on a this record: Pagule Cemetery, Belfast, Allegany Co., NY Mary Hogeboon, d. 13 April 1846, 26 years, 7 months, 17 days, wife of Christian Hogeboon I believe HOGEBOON is quite possibly the name you are looking for and may itself be a misspelling or corruption of HOGEBOOM/Hoogeboom as this spelling appears in NY on the Federal Census from 1790 onwards and there are Hogeboons mentioned in the Harlan newspaper in IA in 196 (Council Bluffs). There are many variations of this name: Hogaboom, Hogoboom, Hoogeboom, Hoogeboon, Hoogenboom (lots of trees posted on this name), Hoogenboon, Hugabone, and, I daresay, Hugglebone. I also saw a spelling that particularly caught my eye: Hoecbomme. From what I saw, this name is Dutch and many, if not most, of the records for them are found in Dutch Reformed Church records. That last spelling is a good candidate for an original spelling and might be what shows up in the immigration records. I wish you good luck in your search. Happy time travels!

    3. The Lake City Graphic July 13, 1893 OBITUARY Mrs. G. G. Smith In the Blade of last week mention was made of the departure of Mrs. Smith and her husband to Chicago where they had gone for the purpose of having the operation of ovaryostomy performed, and a host of friends had hoped that everything would be successful and that the lady would return to Lake city with assurance of entire recovery, but in this they were very much disappointed. The first news after the operation was performed was very discouraging but still friends her were hopeful until about twenty-four hours later a message was received that the lady was dead, and that her remains would be brought back to this city for burial. At 2:30 on Friday the remains arrived and were taken to the beautiful little home, which she in company with her husband had labored hard to make comfortable. In this they had succeeded admirably, but in the midst of all earthly possession that heart might wish or hope for death was no respector. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. S. W. Stophlet, who had in the winter of 1889 received her in full membership in the Presbyterian church, and she remained an active member of that church until death. The church was filled with the friends this good lady had drawn to her through her beautiful life, and the floral offerings were profuse. Mary Viola Ferry was born in Pennsylvania, December 5, 1857, moved to Wisconsin when in childhood, was married to G. G. Smith August 18, 1875, came with her husband to Lake City, October, 1882; died June 29, 1893, aged 35 years, 6 months and 24 days. Mr. Smith desires to return his heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and friends for the many kind offices rendered during the severe trials attending his bereavement. Obituary Benj. Franklin Dwyer Was born at Wabash, Indiana, March, 1844; enlisted with the 100 day men at the opening of the war; re-enlisted in company K, ninth Indiana volunteer infantry, and afterwards in Company L, United States cavalry, serving his country well and faithfully for three years and eleven months. At the close of the war he returned to Indiana and afterwards moved to Michigan, where he was married on September 27, 1868. He settled in this locality seventeen years ago, and was therefore among the old settlers of our county. In the early part of February, 1892, there appeared on one of his cheeks a hard lump, to all intents resembling a tumor. He at once began a course of medical treatment, but to no avail, and later it developed into a cancer which he sought to have removed by physicians skilled in that line, but after each treatment the matter grew worse and it became evident that the only thing that could be done was to bear the burden until little by little, day by day, his life was eaten away, and on the morning of July 4th, he breathed his last at 5 a. m. It was a most horrible death, yet he bore his sufferings in a brave, soldierly manner. The funeral services were held from his home on Wednesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. R. W. Stophlet. At the grave the honors were paid by Lander Post No. 156, G. A. R. of which deceased was a member. Deceased leaves a wife and seven children to mourn the loss of husband and father. ````````````````````` The Holy Bonds On Sunday evening last, as the residence of the bride's father, Miss Nettie Jones was united in marriage to Mr. Austin Mote. The young people are well and favorable known in Lake city and their many friends will wish them a long and happy married life. `````````````````````````````` Under the heading, "A Probable Candidate for Representative," the Lohrville Enterprise says: "It is currently reported that Elm Grove township is to have a candidate in the person of Henry Olsen. We are pleased to hear of their making such a good choice, and they should congratulate themselves on having a man that could represent them and our county in a creditable manner. Mr. Olsen is a man of good judgement and has a thorough understanding of political affairs and the wants of the people, and the faculty of standing before audiences and telling what he knows in a forcible and entertaining manner. Should he decide to announce himself a candidate and succeed in being elected, he would undoubtedly do honor to Calhoun county in that august body of men." ````````````````` The death of Miss Kate Davy and three others was reported form Pomeroy last evening. A gloom was thrown over all scenes of gaiety in the world's fair city this week by the burning of the cold storage building, a the fair grounds, in which a number of lives were lost. At last accounts the bodies of seventeen brave firemen had been taken from the ruins and others were still missing. Mrs. M. G. Sacrider Relief Work Contributions for the relief fo the cyclone sufferers at Pomeroy are pouring in at a rate which is very gratifying to all concerned. It is said that more supplies in the way of cloting have been received than can be used at present. But there is no danger of sending too much money. It will take $250,000,or more, to rebuild Pomeroy as it was before, and this is what should be done. Lake City people have raised in the neighborhood of $1,500, cash, and the work of collecting contributions still goes on. The relief organization at the scene of disaster is in good working order and all contributions will be applied where they will do the most food. Kentner Well, the 4th is passed. Newt Johnson, of Auburn, has moved to Kentner and is running the Clapper building. Land, the Farnhamville physician accused of seducing a 15 year-old girl patient, waived examination in "Squire Earl's court and was placed under $1,000 bonds to appear before the grand jury at the next term of district court. The charge preferred against the doctor is a very serious one, and, if anything like ample grounds exist for it, it is almost a wonder that he is allowed to reside peacefully in a christian community. It is claimed that the young girl was under his treatment for some female disease and he convinced her that it was necessary for her to submit to his desires in order to save her life. The doctor claims that it is simply a case of blackmail. Cyndi Hailey Vertrees Calhoun County, US Genweb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iacalhou/
