This comes from an article written by Velma McMeekin in the Calhoun County History 1854-1984. In an article about the McMeekin family: George and Elizabeth Tubbs had a daughter Margaret, born November 11, 1853 in Clearfield County Pennsylvania. Margaret came to Calhoun Co with her parents in June 1871. On July 9, 1874 she married Darwin Doty. They had a daughter, Francis. Frances then married Elmer McMeekin Feb 3, 1897. I have no connection or other information about this family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My machine just deleted my nice long message to you all by it's little lonesome. Arrrggghhh! I can't believe what a great day this has been for Winter genealogy. You have contact with one of James' descendants? This is way cool. That's a branch I haven't had any contact on yet. I would love it if you could connect us all up. I have spoken with a descendant of William Henry Jr., but she didn't know very much and I haven't been able to contact her father. He is elderly, so he might not be with us any longer. Nor could I reach her Aunt Betty who lives in the same town as my mother. I would dearly love to get them together as my mother has never met any of her very large and extended family other than her first cousin, Mary Anna. I've also been in contact with a descendant of Annie. I have a good deal of information about most of the family just from the public records, but am working on contacts. On the Eyre side, there have been several contact as well - George, Mary, Martha, a collateral line to James, and them contact with Benjamin's brother James' line th! rough Stan and Barbara and a cousin in England. Interesting about George. Do you have the ship's information for him? I'm wondering if he might not have gone to Australia via the US? Almost all of his Eyre aunts and uncles came to the US, many well before the Winters arrived in 1882. His Catton aunts and uncles came here in the 1850's as well (Ellen Eyre married Holland Catton, Alice Catton married George Eyre, Mary Catton married Charles Cooling and their son would marry George's sister Annie's daughter Florence Todd - Ann married George Todd - ) and all of William Catton's wife's siblings - Pacey - but one came to the US as well in the 1850's (his wife, Ann Pacey, married his brother Thomas after both were widowed). They were in Illinois, Michigan, and points west to Iowa and Oregon. It would have made a nice trip. It seems plausible he made the journey across America and lost his wife in the process. I see you can no longer get email addresses from the boards - but your profile tells you not to post an address publicly and you can only use the email system if you are a paid member (which I was, but it's not in the budget just now. Boo! I'm blind without it!). Contact me at s3js9938@gmail.com Which cousin has given you the information on The Eyres? While the information we have is probably accurate, I would caution you that unless something new has come to light in the past few months, there is no "official paper" proof of anything beyond Benjamin's parents' names. I do have Mary Scott's parents' names, but not a lot else on her at this point. If that cousin is Stan (this is his tree http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rshdsh4&id=I698 )or Barbara (this is her tree http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bawm&id=I06846 ) then it is really good, well documented research, but they have the same problem I do. We have information, but no iron c! lad proof for genealogical purposes. If we could just find a Bible somewhere. Did George have one that he thoughtfully left for us? Is that your grandfather on your Ancestry tree? I think he looks a great deal like his Uncle Thomas. Their noses are almost identical. I'll send along a picture to you as soon as I hear back from you and have your email address. I must warn you, though, that I am a digital scrapbooker and find myself absolutely incapable of sending naked pictures any more, so they're all dolled up ready to go into a book :) I'll be happy to teach you how or scrap yours, too! I've been working on my file some today. Somehow, my Legacy program was corrupted and part of it came up missing on the computer, so I had to reload it. Thank the good Lord, I had a backup that worked. I was already trying to get it back where it was before a computer upgrade sent it into cyberspace and corrupted the back up. I was not happy to loose a year's worth of research. But it could have been worse. I must be off to bed. 6AM comes way too early as it is. I can't wait to hear more from you. So glad to meet you. I had made contact with some folks through the NZ mailing list them real life got in the way and I wasn't able to follow up as I would like to. I have a great deal of information on the Winter and Eyre families that I have been trying to get reorganized and on my family tree program. I will be delighted to share what I have and am so thrilled to have a living branch on the tree now for George. I do have William Henry's parents. I have his mother's family back another 2 or 3 generations. I am a little stumped on his father's side, but that will give way, too eventually. I am hoping to find someone with the family Bible. Cousins on the Eyre side provided information we didn't have before and those nuggets knocked down some walls. So maybe the same will happen with the information about George. BTW, my own grandfather was George William - named for Thomas' brother George and father and brother William, I'm sure. On the Eyre side I am only positive one generation back in the Hare/Eyre line and in the Scott line maybe two, but I haven't visited that for awhile, so it may really be more than that. Most of Jane's sibling emigrated to the US. Some of her cousins did, as well. There is an unconfirmed family story that the Winter family had to leave England because one of the sons "got into trouble with the Lady of the Manor." George left so abruptly, I have always wondered if he was the one or if this is just one of those kind of "romantic" stories every family has. It would be so fun to know. If it was an illegitimate child, we will probably never know unless it is in the private records of the Fane family (they were the Lords and Ladies of the Manor) but there are loads more ways to get in trouble than that. It didn't take much in the old days in England to get yourself sentenced to death - stealing a silver spoon or a few loaves of bread or someone's underwear would do it. Mind you, that was before the late 1800's, but you can see what I mean! Rather than delay an farther, I'll send you what I have on my computer here in the next day or so. Please feel free to email me at the address listed here. I'm doing the happy dance. What a great way to start the week! I have just found the 1881 census, the reason George is not on it is because he had (i beleive) already married and left for NZ . His wife we believe died either enroute or in Australia. Once again no substantial info. If you can help out with any info on any of the family that would be great I have parents for William Henry b1832, but don't know if they are correct!!
