I see that there are two Dora Smith's in Calhoun county in 1870, both are 1 year old on the census. Do you know Dora's parents names? Neither Smith family looked to be part of mine. They write: The HOPE cemetery was started by a donation of one acre of land by Mr.W.M. Gould and his wife Sarah. Mrs. Skinner;s burial was the first and was quite close to the road (Aug 30, 1875). When McLaughlins returned from working at the coal banks and found where the cemetery was, they had to have a new survey and move their homesite South and East of where it had been. When the road was graded and graveled, Mrs. Skinner's grave was moved to near the center of the cemetery. Many deaths were from the diphtheria epidemic and many from Scarlet Fever. After the cemeteries at Manson and Rockwell City were established it was customary to move the bodies of your family. Some left the old stone and bought a new one for the new lot. Some moved the stone with the body and some had no stone at all. When a new law was being passed that no more bodies were to be removed, there was much activity at the cemetery late at night. Men came with their teams, wagons, and lanterns and removed the bodies before it became illegal. In surveying the cemetery for fencing, they found three graves were East of the line but they were left there. They were Gould graves and the land to the East belonged to their family. Their markers were very fancy hand carved crosses made by Jim Walsh. They were attached to the fence when it was erected and may have been given to a museum later. The deed to Trustees of the Hope Cemetery was dated March 14, 1878. ------ So, it is very possible that if you had something written in an obituary that your ancestor was buried in HOPE cemetery, it is very possible that the grave was moved to one of the other cemeteries later. I think that is the reason my Grandparents came by train from up there to Missouri my mother said they moved every thing by train. I can't remember them speaking of that town but when I got the document about his death it named the town where he was to be sent. Family still lived there and I'm going to place some dates on here later tomorrow and see if any one remembers any thing about the weather issues mentioned the family was early settlers there. Great Grandfather had a calendar with the name of Barnum as the city his business was in; it hung on the wall of an office with a big old wood stove in it. I love that picture. Thank you for telling about the train and its visitors. Thank you so much. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have leaned that in 1974 we did visit the Rose Hill Cemetery even if at this time I can't remember where it was located. We have some pictures of our family "Moore" graves. However I failed to record dates I was new to family research at that time and had hoped to get to return there.I have since learned that Knierim is the name of the town where my great grandfathers body was shipped, by train, from Warrensburg Missouri to Iowa he died here at the home of his daughter. Mrs Howard Case Moore. J. Hagans was his name he was in Real Estate. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The library at the county seat of Rockwell City, Iowa has an extensive collection of cematery records for all cemataries in the county. Manson, Iowa has two cemataries; Rose Hill and Hope both located in Lincoln Twp. Rose Hill Cematary is on 7th Avenue east of Manson. Hope Cematary is on Udell. Itis barb wired all around the cematary and the gate is locked so I could not get inside. The stones are very sparce. The librarian thought they were missing due to vandalism and deterioration. The librarian could not find anyone who knew who to contact about Hope Cematary. It is well groomed. I could see the stone of my family from the road. She died in 1874. The newspapers in Manson began in 1875. The Manson library had very few records when I was there in 2001. So Rockwell City is your best bet. When I was a boy, between 1947 and 1958, my dad was the secretary for Rose Hill Cemetery. However, I do not know exactly what years he held that position. He set up a record keeping system for them because the existing system was a mess. I am far from there now, and Dad is long gone. The Bank referred to was the Manson State Bank when I was a boy, but then one of your communications stated you called them. In the early 1980s, Manson was hit by a terrible tornado that destroyed a good deal of the downtown, so the library is likely not in the place it was when I was a kid. I'm still checking. The Historical Society and the Gen Soc were mostly the same people. I'm trying to find the name of who took over the Historical Soc. If you don't hear from me in a few days. Send me another email. I sometimes get side tracked. You can order microfilmed deed records from your local Family History Library. Check their website at familysearch.org.
