The mother died in childbirth when the youngest child was three years old, leaving the children with the responsibilities of exeryday living. Alfed taught school in southern Illinois until comming by train in 1914 to Sherwood, Iowa. His first job after arriving was working for B.F. Holder as a farm laborer. He lived with the family and fell in love with their daughter Kate. Kate Holder was the third of four chldren in the Holder family - born August 5, 1898, in Gibson City, Illinois. She moved with her folks to the farm in Sherwood in 1904. She was educated in the local public schools and graduated from the Rockwell City High School in 1917. Alfred served in the US Army in WWI. He was a front line runner carrying messages until he lost two fingers from enemy fire. He was still under medical care when the Armistice was signed. After returning to Iowa he and Kate were married in her parents farm home at Sherwood on May 17, 1919. To this union were born five children -Robert Amos, April 21, 1920; Dale Holder, Nov 24, 1922, Doris Caroline, Feb 5, 1925; Verle Kieth, June 15, 1930; and William Franklin , Feb 2, 1937. Alfred and Kate rented a farm in the Jolley area and farmed there until March, 1923, when they moved to the Holder home farm near Sherwood. Here they in February , raised their family, worked hard farming and raising livestock. They were active in Farm Bureau, 4-H activities, and the betterment of the rural school. Alfred was on the drive to get Rural Electric Cooperative started in Lake Creek township and also was a township comitteeman when the AAA farm program started. They were very active members of the Sherwood Presbyterian Church until it closed and they transferred their membership to Rockwell City. Their children all attended country school at Lake Creek Number Three and graduated from the Rockwell City HS. Alfred and Kate lost two children in tragic accidents. Doris died of a cerebral hemorrage after falling from a gate at the country school when twelve years old. Franklin was a drowning victim in the Pacific Ocean while stationed at the Vandenberg Air Base, Californiia, February 1966. In the fall of 1947 Alfred and Kate moved to 106 North 8th Street. ((Rockwell City))They spent countless hours beautifying their yard and working a flower and vegetable garden. They remained active in their church ,community and children (Robert, Dale, Verle) and their grandchildren who all lived on farms in the Rockwell City area. Alfred passed away in November 1971, after being in poor health for several years. Kate remained very active until suffering a heart attack in her sleep on June 10, 1973. Yippee! Another cousin! My family just keeps growing by leaps and bounds. I am seriously doing the happy dance! George went to Australia first? That might explain a lot! I have been in touch with another cousin in NZ who says when he married Sarah McLelland he was shown as a widower, so I wonder if he married in Britain and she died en route or in Australia. Perhaps that's why he left there and went on to NZ. It surely would help if we could find some family Bibles somewhere, huh? If I knew the first wife's name, I could probably track the rest. But knowing he went to Australia first gives me someplace else to look and that might break down that wall. I have been working on my Winter files quite a lot of late, as have two of our Eyre cousins. It's been very exciting to make all the connections. I don't know Joyce and Ardith, but would love to be in touch with them. My great grandfather, Thomas was very close to Herbert, at least until my great grandparents moved to California. Since the only cousin's names my mother knew belonged to some of his boys, I feel they probably remained close in spirit, but not as in touch since they lived so far apart. Their wives were sisters, so it was a strong bond. John, I hope we can get the communications open again amongst our family. That would be so wonderful. My mother is an only child and thought her family was tiny. You can't imagine the surprised when I finally was able to find the Winter and Eyre families. Then when I found the Krohn side it was exploded again. It has been an amazing journey. My email address is s3js9938@gmail.com I can't wait to tell the others and put you all in touch, too. Hooray! It's time I got to work, but I'll be back to you later. Again, so good to meet you! Blessings, Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I have tried many times and cannot come up with a census listing of Henry Gould. That would be the only way I could determine where he was born. He lived on the Northeast corner of North Twin Lake. That is in Sherman Township. It is 5 miles west of Hope Cemetery. I am pretty sure that there are no Calhoun County History 1854-1984 for sale. They ran out many years ago. I don't think they were able to reprint. The title of the pamphlet is <1967, A Tour of Calhoun County Historical Sites.> When Manson celebrated their centennial they made two publications. You have one and I have the other. the one I have is a very large, 11 by 15 inch. Someone went through the old newspaper articles and clipped a para here and one there and put them together. there is no index, so it is very time consuming to look anything up. I have highlighted the names so it goes a bit quicker. Sorry I couldn't find any more. 3. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday, looking for any trace of a W. Gould and found none. What was the latest time you have info on him? I looked through all the Ancestry.com census and records I did find Sarah age 39 living with a brother-in-law George Allison family Emma must be the sister. That was in the 1880 census The death index shows Sarah died 3-8-1900. There were a few other Gould names in Sherman Township, but not as many as I would have thought. I have an 1884 map, but it does not show Gould on land near Manson. I'm not sure of the location of the hope cemetery but will find out. Did W.M. (what does that stand for?) die early or did he move on? I have a copy of the Centenial edition of the Manson Journal. This is a book of old Journal articles. It is very hit or miss in finding anything about anyone, but I didn't find any references to Gould.
