    1. [IACALHOU] Midwest research material-place names, cemeteries and more
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: r_a_green Surnames: Classification: cemetery Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.calhoun/973/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 19th CENTURY ATLAS, MAPS, HISTORICAL GUIDES & GAZETTEERS (includes publications from IA, IN, MN, OH and WI) http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/hgg.html Historians, genealogists and researchers of the 19th century Midwestern United States will find the vast amount of historical research material in these books and atlases on CD a very valuable resource. Each of these extensive gazeteer and immigrant guides contain the description of places and place names, many of which are no longer found on contemporary maps, including: cities, towns, villages, settlements, schools, post offices, transportation routes and schedules, and much more. Historical Guides and Gazetteer CD's may also include maps of the period providing cartographic reference to 19th century places identified and discussed in the literature. Also included are hundreds of advertisements by contributing businesses providing historical insight into the goods, services and the merchants that made them available during the 19th century. Anyone interested in the history of these regions will find this material useful. ------------------------------------------------------------ HISTORIC ATLAS SERIES (includes 19th century atlases of IA, IL, IN, KY, KS, MI, MN, NE, OH, PA, VA and WI) http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/has.html The Historic Atlas Series CD's are digital reproductions of 19th century maps and historical atlas data in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The Adobe Reader software is required to view, manipulate and print PDF data is included on each CD. States with maps and atlases currently available are shown in the graphic to the right. 19th century geographic and statistical data are useful to historians, genealogists and researchers with an interest in the landscape and cultural setting of this period. Early county maps may contain many places that no longer exist or that have been obscured over time. Atlases with statistical data provide vivid detail of 19th century pioneer lifestyles. Details on early maps are often difficult to read and these are no exception; however, by virtue of the Adobe PDF formatting, these documents may be inspected and printed at high levels of magnification without additional digital distortion; something that simply cannot be accomplished with paper reproductions and photocopies. There is a vast amount of information that can be gleaned from these sources and the diligent researcher will find these cartographic resources useful in their studies. ------------------------------------------------------------ Good luck with your research! 1. [IACALHOU] Skeletons in the Closet?
    2. Oregon Rain
    3. My daddy always said "If you keep digging around in the family history you will find skeletons in the closet." Halloween has just slipped past us and what better time to think about helping those skeletons leftover from the festivities find their families by being a part of the IAGenWeb family by adopting a wonderful Iowa county. It takes a special love for our ancestors to help others in the discovery of theirs and that's the first qualification of being a county coordinator. The counties available are Keokuk, Audubon, Cedar, Butler, Warren, Lucas and Cass counties - all available for you to visit at http://iagenweb.org/state/colist.php . Please contact us at welcome_to_iagenweb@iagenweb.org with your choice of counties and we will see that you have the opportunity to help skeletons find their way home! I was wondering if it could be Puffert. Do you know if any Puffahrt were in Calhoun county. I though I saw something in 1895. in 1889 Henry schroeder was age fifty and his wife Marie on the ship was age forty. There was a child Ida age eight a sibling age nine. siblings Emma and Heinrich. The others in that section were August Grote who settled early in Dawson Greene county. and David and Dorothy Naefke from Reading calhoun county.[ Maybe David should have been Diedrich] I suspect something that goes back to Otto Puffahrt in Hitzacker area and Wiettzetze. Where I also had relation. The name Seil is mentioned. Breese. Since it is mentioned as origination as Oldendorf. I have several Schroeder families of interest. So it could be any of them.? Consider contacting the Calhoun county recorder's office (do a google search for address/phone/fax) to request a copy of his will/probate documents, which may mention Evelyn's married surname and whereabouts in 1966. Also inquire whether they maintain a death or burial index to see if you can get Wayne's exact date of death; and whether they maintain a marriage index to see if you can get marriage information for Evelyn. You might also contact the Lake City Public Library (http://www.lakecity.lib.ia.us/) to request obit lookups for both Frank and Wayne. Democrat, The | Emmetsburg, Iowa | Thursday, March 31, 1966 | Page 2 Mrs. Alfred SCHREIBER was called to Lake City recently by the death of her father, Frank TROTTER, 89, a retired farmer. Mr. Trotter died in McVay hospital there. Services were held at the Woodlawn Christian church. Preceded in death by his wife, Mr. Trotter leaves five children, including Mrs. Schreiber. I also found a news item about Tom NEWMAN's death in January 1960, which says that he died on his 10th wedding anniversary and left eight children. That would date his second marriage to January 1950; perhaps you could locate the marriage license application and see whether it indicates any prior marriage. Author: metaphor Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.calhoun/962.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ian wrote, "I am looking for information on Della Sexton and William A Richardson. I already have information about their families of origin and what I can find in the federal census records. I am particularly interested in information about them after 1930. ..." Ian, it's unclear whether you're looking for someone named Della SEXTON after 1930, or whether your post suggests that Della SEXTON and William RICHARDSON were married. I do find a William A. RICHARDSON with wife Della in Pocahontas county in 1930, but since you've posted your query in Calhoun county, I wonder whether I'm looking at the correct individuals. I checked Della's family of origin to see if her whereabouts after 1930 might be tracked through siblings' obituaries or other newspaper items. I found a notice about the 1914 drowning of Charles SEXTON of Keokuk. If you're interested in receiving this as an email attachment, contact me at maryfobian [at] comcast [dot] net.
