2. Sharon Paulson
3. Hi Sandy, Thanks for all the good information. If I don't get the obit through e-mail, I will try one of these methods. I have a film reader at the house. I took a CAD class in Glendale in the mid 80's. I had an uncle who lived there for a number of years. He had returned to Cedar Rapids, IA and died there in 1962. His daughter lived there for a number of years and now she is at Palm Desert (much too hot for me). Since you live up there do you know anything about the movie industry? I have Crago/Craigo's in my line. My mother was a Crago. George Crago had some kind of traveling show (minstrel) with some of his brothers. Supposedly one of the brothers was smaller and he would dress up like a girl. He was suppose to be killed by a bear in the hills of Chico, CA. I've never been able to confirm this. Chico is in Butte Co. I found on the California death list, some Crago's had died in that county. I guess I should try to persue this again. A nephew of George, James Crago moved to Los Angeles. He was b. 1888. My mother said that they were in the movie business. I assume that they had something to do with the business and not stars. It is suppose to warm up down here. But we have a heavy marine layer. Yesterday, was sweatshirt weather. 3. Hopefully someone on the list can do a lookup for you, but I found that these newspapers (the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier) is on film and probably can be shipped to you at your very own local librray via Inter-Library Loan. Just go to the Reference Desk and ask to fill out an Inter-Library Loan for that newspaper for that time period you want. Other than that, I personaly wrote the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier's Library (in the old days they called Newspaper Libraries "Morgues") where the librarian did a search and then returned a copy of the obit & story of my grand-aunt's death in a RR accident. Took them three-four months to return it though, even with my stamped, self addressed envelope. The 3rd option is to go to the Iowa STate Historical Society where they Rent you 2 films at a time and send it to you. They have most the Iowa newspapers throughout the state on film. At least these three methods are tried and true. 1. [IABLACKH] Searching for Frank Graham of Birmingham, Iowa
2. Sam Sloan
3. I am searching for Frank Graham of Birmingham, Iowa. He married Jennie Newell in Fairfirld Iowa on December 31, 1883. I believe that he may be a relative of mine but I do not have him on my family tree. There was a Frank Graham of Birmingham Iowa who had a father named Simon Graham. Everything fits but I cannot be sure that this is the same person. Birmingham is in Van Buren County, Iowa. Jennie Newell appears on the 1880 census. Her father was George Newell. The reason I think he might be a relative is that it would explain where my Uncle Newell Jacobson got his first name. The mother of Newell was Mary Elizabeth Graham (1879-1956), who was my grandmother. Her family lived in the Fairfield area at one time. We know that Newell was a family name but we do not know from where it came since we have not been able to find any relatives named Newell. Sam Sloan The Fairfield Tribune Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa Thursday, January 3, 1884 A QUIET Wedding took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Newels, Monday evening on which occasion Mr. Frank Graham of Birmingham and Miss Jennie A Newell were made one. It was a very pleasant affair and among those present were Mr. L.J. Larramer and wife and Miss Anderson of Birmingham.

2. There is a book entitled, The History of Black Hawk County. I believe it was published in 1935 by Clarke Publishing of Chicago, Illinois. I recalled a reading about what turned out to be a relative. Catreva Manning, Archivist, with Grout Museum District in Waterloo might be able to help you out. I believe that Virden and Mullan are both listed in that book. WWW.GroutMuseumDistrict.org 503 South Street Waterloo, Iowa 50701 Phone weekdays 319-234-6357 Fax is 319-236-0500 Email was clmkell@hotmail.com PS I believe I have seen Virden and Mullan bios on Iowa-Irish mailing lists. 1. Re: [IABLACKH] death cert? marriage cert?
2. Death and Marriage Certificates are only issued by County at $10.00 each for genealogy purposes -- no certified stamp -- or by State which is a certified copy at $20.00 each. With death and marriage dates you can just send request to County courthouse with check and they will mail directly to you. Library, Grout Museum and Black Hawk County Courthouse should all have birth-death and marriage indexes. Grout Museum also has Cemetery Books for Black Hawk County including St. Mary's of Mount Carmel. You can go to Courthouse and look up births and deaths in Indexes and then go to referenced Birth-Marriage-Death Books and record info yourself for free---week days. Andy Schrag

Library has mircofilm on loan or given to them by genealogy society but not a full or up to date set of film. Andy Schrag Sacramento, CA

1. [IABLACKH] death cert? marriage cert?
2. I'm wondering if I could find death certificates or marriage certificates at a public library in Waterloo. I'm interested in finding out the pertinent information on James W. Tynan who died Dec 24, 1893 and was buried at Calvary Cemtery in Waterloo. He married Nellie Cummings on Nov 16, 1891, in Black Hawk County. Also looking for info on John Tynan who died June 27, 1902 and is also buried at Calvary. If anyone has access to this info, I'd appreciate a lookup, or let me know if these records are on film at a library and I'll road trip from Bettendorf. If anyone has a 1900 census index, could you see in John is there? Thanks, Chris in Bettendorf, Iowa

3. Yes, John along with wife Mary and son Edward are living in Waterloo, Black Hawk Co, in 1900. John was born in Ireland in 1818, Mary in England in 1832 and Edward in Ohio in 1856. Is this the correct family? 1. [IABLACKH] WELLS, KEPFORD, HOUSE
2. I am trying to find where three related people with these surnames are buried. The full names are as follows: George Pennelton WELLS - my father Florence KEPFORD - his sister Upton KEPFORD - Florence's husband Florence HOUSE - George and Florence's mother When my father died in Indianapolis, IN, my mother could not afford to bury my father. He was cremated and his ashes sent to his mother and sister in Waterloo, IA because they supposedly owned plots in or near Waterloo. I have no information on where Florence House or Florence Kepford were living in Waterloo, but do know that my father's ashes were sent for burial. The above family may have all been buried in adjacent plots. Can anyone help me find out where they may be buried? My father died August 23, 1953. Florence Kepford died in June 1973. Upton Kepford died in September 1980 Florence House died March 1971 My brother Bill was 7 when our father died, and I wasn't even 2 at the time. We are now 56 and 51 years old and would like to be able to visit our father's grave before we die ourselves. Thank you so much for any help you can provide. Denise

2. Angela, Howard Allen (14) is on the 1930 census of Waterloo Township, District 26, page 5A, I believe. His father is Earl E. Allen of Iowa. His grandfather was born in NY and his grandmother was born "Canada-French." This family line is on the Rootsweb Family Trees. Just search the name Earl E. Allen and find the Baker/Helvey Gedcom. Hope this helps. Nancy in MO
