Hello, Try writing to the Waterloo.Courier newspaper for the info!
Hello, If there is anyone who might be willing to do an obituary look up for me in Cedar Falls, I would be very appreciative. The obituary would be for Alice Elizabeth (Johnson) Bixby who died 17 July 1904. After leaving Cedar Falls, she and her family were living in Saratoga County, New York for a short time when she died suddenly from a burst appendix. I am having trouble finding anything on her, but would suspect Cedar Falls would have an obituary for her since they had lived there for some time before removing to New York. Thank you to any one who might be able to assist! Sincerely, Kathryn Stauffer
Could someone please do a lookup for an obit for Charles Shane b. july 19, 1880 d. May 1966 believed to have been in the Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa area. Thanks, Cindy
Hi, I have a website called "Iowa Ghost Towns located at: www.iowaghosttowns.com A ghost town is a town, village or hamlet that has disappeared or just not what they were in their prime. On the Iowa ghost towns site there is a page for Adair County. Please check out this page and see if you can add any information for the ghost towns listed on the Black Hawk County page. I am also looking for someone to adopt the Black Hawk County and work to increase the ghost towns listed there and to add more towns as they can find them. Thanks for your time. Please answer privately and off this list at mghill@gte.net Mel www.iowaghosttowns.com
Hi Again, That'll teach me to spellcheck first! The Wen born of course should have been When and the records that I found for a friends grandfather was from 1880 so sometimes one does luck out with the pre 1906 naturalizations. Barb
Hi List, Online I put in the information to the National Archives and Records Administration. From them I recieved papers which in short said I am so disappointed. Mary and I both read the paper that came back and it said Using your information, we examined our Soundex Naturalization Index covering final naturalizations filed at Federal and non-Federal courts in northwest Indiana, eastern Iowa, eastern and southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois, 1840-1950 (Chicago and Cook County, IL, October 1871-1950 only); and then an X Enclosed is a copy of the index card(s) for Joseph Bray, who may be the individual(s) of interest to you. It also said Our office does not have non-federal records. It also said there is usually at least a "petiton for naturalization"("final papers") and sometimes in addition (2) a "declaration of intention ("first papers") and (3) a "certificate of arrival." Files do not include the "certificate of naturalization" given to the newly naturalized citizen by the court. To us, that indicated they had the record, just not the non-federal. Today I get all that and the check back and it says "as indicated on our original response, We do not have the records you desire. To obtain them, you will need to contact the county clerk of Black Hawk County, Iowa. Included are a copy of the index card you will need to send and contact information for the court. We apologize for misleading you in any way in the original response." The contact information is outdated. I had to look up the correct phone number and so on online and had already done that prior to sending to the NARA. I had already contacted Ruth Tucker about a record through the Gen. society, she turned me over to a lookup, I had called the number for the County Clerk in Black Hawk and after asking several (and by the way being very patient and nice about it all) determined that the records are not there. The lookup person went to the Court House and had the same luck. The Index card says B 600 Family Name 600 BRAY Given name or names JOSEPH Address (nothing written, just an X on that line) Certificate no. (or vol. and page) Vol. I P. 480 Title and location of court Iowa Sist. Black Hawk Co. Waterloo. Country of birth or allegiance England Wen born (or age) just an X Date and port of arrival in U. S. an X Date of naturalization Oct. 2, 1877 Names and addresses of witnesses just an X I realize that normally pre 1906 records for naturalization have little real information but recently did luck out for a friend (oh WHY couldn't I luck out for me) and found her grandfather's MN naturalization records and those gave his birth month, year and place, where he landed and the month, so if I can find these records I might get a clue as to Joseph's landing place if nothing else which might allow me to determine which Joseph Bray is HIM in the 1870. There are several possibles given that other records argue as to his actual year of birth. Someone knowledgeable on natrualization records on list maybe have any suggestion? Regards, Barb
Dear Kevin, The results you gave me, were informative. Thanks again. Dear Barb, I ran across your Joseph Bray (I think) by accident while browsing for relatives. He lived near mine in Lincoln Township and was age 38 with a family in 1880. Need more data? Regarding the Jansen, you might try Jensen spelling. There were Jensens from Denmark in Lincoln Township too. One of my Cavanaugh relatives married a Jensen. Dear Kevin, Thank you very much for your three Emails. The people below belong to the family of our great-grandmother Hebe HINRICHS nee SWIDDEN, who left the port of Emden, Ostfriesland, on April 18, 1855 with the ship "Antje Brons" and arrived on June 25, 1855 New York. The family story is, that Hebe married before 1860 in Grand Detour, IL Lammert G. HINRICHS. Both were the parents of George Lammert HINRICHS and Ida (Eda) HINRICHS. Hebe then gave birth also to 3 sets of twins; out of each set one child died right away and the other twin followed later. A few years ago we tried to find the burial places, but didn't get any results. I found a marriage for Lammert Hendricks to Maria Jarnagin on September 25, 1878 in Greene County Iowa. That's all the information provided on the Iowa marriage cd that I have. Thank you all for trying to help. This short one appeared this afternoon. I doubt the large one, to be this Sunday I think , will be available on line, so I hope someone will collect it for me. My family & I will be in FL till 29th of Mar. Thanks--Dick in MD She was actually Josephine Caroline (Bolt) Dykeman WATERLOO --- Josephine Caroline Dykeman, 92, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 16, at Covenant Medical Center; memorial services 2 p.m. Saturday at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, preceded by private family burial; no visitation; memorials to Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church or Waterloo Community Playhouse; Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, 233-3146, is in charge of arrangements.
Dear Hans, I looked in 1880 first, because indexing for the country is more complete for that year, but here is more, from 1870 in Cedar Falls Ward 4, Black Hawk County. I think this is what you are looking for. Sorry, I misread your note, realize now you are looking for Hinrichs. There were 29 of those in the 1880 census for Iowa, none look to be in the Cedar Rapids area. Only nine were born in Iowa and lived in Iowa that year. They range in age from 5 months to 16 years; two lived in Lincoln and seven in Davenport. They were: Ludwig HINRICHS 1 <1879> Iowa Son Single White Male Lincoln, Iowa, IA Maria HINRICHS 4 <1876> Iowa Dau Single White Female Lincoln, Iowa, IA Anna HINRICHS 5 <1875> Iowa Dau Single White Female Davenport, Scott, IA Elisabeth HINRICHS 6 <1874> IOWA Dau Single White Female Davenport, Scott, IA Fred HINRICHS 5M <1880> Iowa Son Single White Male Davenport, Scott, IA Henry HINRICHS 3 <1877> Iowa Son Single White Male Davenport, Scott John HINRICHS 12 <1868> IOWA Son Single White Male Davenport, Scott, IA Mary HINRICHS 16 <1864> IOWA Dau NA White Female Davenport, Scott, IA Therese HINRICHS 3 <1877> IOWA Dau Single White Female Davenport, Scott, IA Hope this is helpful. Kevin
Search of Ancestry.com gives very little for that last name in the U.S. I did find one ship's passenger listing, for: boje swidden, 11 Jun 1852, age 29, male, from Deutschland, arrived from Bremen, Germany to USA on the ship Matadon You may need to look for alternate spellings to get census data, or look at the census of Cedar Rapids for 1860 until you find what you seek. Kevin in Missouri
Dear Listmembers, Hebe SWIDDEN, born February 14m 1838 in Osterhusen/Hinte, Ostfriesland, Germary, married Lammert G. HINRICHS or HENDRICKS. They lived around Cedar Falls, IA until his death in 1871. I'm looking for information about their children, being born around Cedar Falls, IA. Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken
Dick, I am one of the "obituary ladies" in Buchanan County just east of Waterloo. I cut obits with local ties for our extensive obituary card file. I have checked last Friday through Wednesday and there is nothing in there. I will look again today. I was just told via Internet the Obit in full size was in Sunday's paper! I am not sure if it's this comming Sunday or last, but she died on 17th! To Dick in MD, There is a site that transcribes obituaries from newspapers. Their site is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~obituary I am a transcriber myself, but for my local paper here in Kansas. But if, whoever input the data still has the "hard copy" of the obituary they can scan it to you. I have done that on occasion, too. It might take awhile before the obituary appears on this site. I usually input about once a month.
