I have an early photo of the Waterloo Lutheran Church and a few of relatives. I haven't checked the USGenWeb site for Blackhawk in quite some time, but maybe they have a link for sharing such photos. My relatives were the Schweingrubers that married into the Helms family. Nancy Moore
I have some of the early 1900s. My grandmother went to nursing school in Waterloo and graduated in 1918. I also have some pictures of aunts, uncles, mothers in law, etc around that time. I washoping to find some relatives who could help me identify the photos. I have great pictures of the inside of the hospital. Hi, I am related to all the above families. Many of them lived in Blackhawk Co. in the 1850s on. I have many old photographs and many of them do not have names. I am interested in trying to identify some of the photographs. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who is related to these families. Thank you, Barbara Silva
At the the request of Sheri King I am reposting our recent post to the list as follows: Hello Everyone: Those of you who are working on your lines back to your 1600s American Ancestors will find the 1600s Ancestors Data Base to be of great help. I have recently posted several hundred new Ancestors to the Data Base bringing the total to over 29,000 entries both men and women. Also listed are several National Societies who have proven many of the Ancestors you will find here. There are also a few new Reference Works that contain many more lines. The entries are coded to indicate to which Society or Reference Work has at least one of their proven lines. Several of the National Societies have over 20 different lines from a single Ancestor. WHEN YOU ENTER THE 1600s ANCESTORS DATA BASE be sure to look at the top of each data page for the link that takes you to the "Data Base Information Page". There you will find the list of codes and how to use them. This is MUST reading if you are to understand the Data Base and how to use it. We are constantly updating the Data Base with Additional Ancestors and references as time permits. More work has been devoted to updating listings of the female Ancestors by going back and including marriage dates. This takes much time and we still have a lot of work to do there. You will find the 1600s Ancestor Data Base at; http://www.firstfamilies.org/db/ For those of you who are AOL members you may have trouble connecting to many pages that may come up with a message such as "Page Does Not Exist" and you should cure that by using your browser feature of Copy and Paste the URL to your browser and pressing your enter key. Everyone has free access to the Data Base and to all our posted pages. Enjoy and Happy Hunting Ryan Jackson Data Base Manager America's First Families

Dear Thomas, I will use English this time; maybe my German is not so good. I searched for Herrmann in New York passenger lists for 1862 and found only these two possibilities: on ship Helvetia from Bremen, arrived New York, 29 April 1862 C. Herrmann, male, age 40, occupation baker on ship Hammonia from Hamburg (via England), arrived New York, 6 May 1862 Chs Herrmann, male, age 30 There may be something under a different spelling. By the way, was Clemens Herrmann born in 1841 or 1814. Your note said 1841 but that would make him only 13 when he married Johanne and very much younger than she. I have no luck so far finding Herrmann in Iowa census records for 1870 or 1880. There are some, but no match with given name or age. I will keep looking. My own great grandmother came from Germany to Waterloo in 1861. Her parents were Peter Salz and Anna Katherina Steimel. Peter was born in Hoppengarten (13 Feb 1818). Can you tell me where Hoppengarten is in modern Germany? If your Clemens Herrmann came to Waterloo and was Catholic he might have known my great great grandparents. Yours sincerely, Kevin Kelly Columbia, MO
In 1950 there were three hospitals in Waterloo, Allen, Schoitz, and St. Francis. There was no Soldiers Home in Waterloo, but there was one in Marshalltown, 60 miles away. Hello Listers, I'm a new subscriber to this list, trying to come up with a good explanation as to why my husband was born in Marshalltown, IA, in 1950 even though the family was living in Waterloo at the time. Did Waterloo or Black Hawk County have a hospital back then? If not, would the hospital in Marshalltown have been the closest one? In addition, would someone on the list have access to Waterloo phone books or City Directories from that timeframe? I'd like to find a listing for hubby's maternal grandparents, Chester and Lucy GILBERT. Chester was born about 1893 and was a veteran of WWI (maybe WWII as well) and I'm thinking he may have been in the Soldier's Home in Waterloo then. Thank you. Joey Stark
Found an old photo taken by Veach & Bull, Sorensen studio, Cedar Falls IA, late 1800s to early 1900s. The subject is an elderly female sitting in a chair. The annotation on the back says "Bert's grandma Elmer". That's all it says and it's not much to go on, but if anyone had a Grandma Elmer in the family (curious name) this might be her. Rebecca
