I was on the list a few years back when I was on AOL and received some wonderful information! Since then I have found many more connections I am hoping someone can help me with. The ones I knew of before were Samuel and Elizabeth Owens. He was an attorney as was his son, Madison. They lived in Waterloo several years before going on to CA in about 1888. A son, Levi, "Lee" married a local girl and died about the time the others went on to CA. His wife's name was Erminnie according to the census and since their married life before he passed away was between censuses, I have no idea if there were children but I believe they would have remained in Waterloo if there had been. Does anyone have any idea how I might find this out? Samuel had a son, John, as well that married a local women and I believe they stayed behind in Waterloo as well until after their children were raised at least. Next are my Evans' John Owens Evans was Samuel's nephew. His wife was Rebecca. They lived in East Waterloo/Evansdale, died nearly the turn of the century and are buried in the Fairview Cemetery, according to the information I have. Their children were: Josephine Evans Shoemaker Updegnall, Kate/Mary Catherine Clossen, Dora/ Ellen Eldora Partridge, John Grant, William Thomas (a judge and may have an attorney son in the area?), and Elmer Lee/Levi Elmer. Last (as of this moment!) are my Murrays. I have a line of my great grandfather's brother that moved to the Waterloo area. His name was Arthur. He died in 1965. I don't have his wife's name. If you need more information, please let me know. I may or may not have more but I know it just takes one "clue" sometimes! Thanks in advance for any help and/or suggestions anyone may have! History of Black Hawk County. p. 446 D.C. HENRY, son of James and Hannah (Clark) Henry, came with his parents to this county in October, 1858. His father was born April 7, 1807, near Colchester, Massachussetts, and was of Irish and English descent. The father was reared and educated in Madison County, New York, and was there married, his wife being a native of Connecticut, born May 6, 1806. He removed with his family to Illinois in 1856, and as before stated, came to Black Hawk County, Iowa, in 1858, living in Mount Vernon Township till his death. His wife also died in this township. They were the parents of the following children—Albert Henry, born in September, 1835, farming in Washington Territory; Alpheus, born in July, 1837, living in Mt. Vernon Township; D. C., born August 14, 1840, in Madison County, New York; Frederick, born June 2, 1850, died in August, 1882, all the children being born in Madison County, New York. Our subject was reared in his native county till sixteen years of age, and there received a limited education in the common schools. January 1, 1868, he was married to Maria E. Thurston, born in St. Joseph County, Michigan, December 22, 1842, a daughter of Ira and Amanda (Fletcher) Thurston, residents of Bremer County, Iowa. To this union have been born five children, of whom three are living-H. Mabel, born February 2, 1870; Bertha M., born June 2, 1872; Frank C., born September 14, 1876, all in Mount Vernon Township. Charles C. was born in July 1875, and died August 23, 1875, and George A., born January 24, 1879, died January 10, 1880. Mrs. Henry is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. In his religious views Mr. Henry is liberal. In politics he is a Greenbacker. He has served twelve years as justice of the peace, and has also served as assessor, being elected such in the fall of 1884. Mr. Henry has made farming his principal occupation through life, and has met with fair success. He now owns 240 acres on section 33, Mount Vernon Township. Mrs. Henry's father was born in Lyle, Brown County, New York, February 24, 1810, and when he was ten years of age his parents moved to St. Joseph County, Michigan, where he was married, living there till about sixty years of age. In May, 1854, he came to Iowas, and settled in Bremer County, where he has since resided. His wife was born in Mentor, Geauga County, August 16, 1817.
Biographical Sketches of Black Hawk County p. 418-419 JOHN BARKER has been a resident of this county since December 1, 1861. He lived at Waterloo till March, 1862, when he settled on his present farm of eighty acres, on section 16, Lester Township. On his land a small log cabin had been erected, and a half acre of land broken when he first settled on it. His land is now under cultivation, and his residence is comfortable and commodious. Mr. Barker was born in Essex County, New York, August 22, 1820, and when he was four years old his parents, Samuel and Parmelia (Henderson) Barker, moved to Georgia, Vermont, then to Massachusetts, and three years later removed to Lower Canada. His father was born in England, and at the age of sixteen ran away from his home, coming to America, and was married in Shelburne, Vermont, his wife being a native of that place. He died in 1836. John Barker began to earn his own living at the early age of ten years. He was married in Randolph, Wisconsin, April 23, 1849, to Mrs. Sarah A. Presba, and to this union have been born two children—Frederick G., born February 9, 1850, died in Black Hawk County, May 24, 1874, and Alice J., born in Wisconsin, August 23, 1854, married Thomas Carns, of Lester Township, and has three children. Mrs. Barker was born in Lower Canada, May 2, 1821, and was there married to her first husband, John Presba, a native of New Hampshire, who died in Wisconsin in 1848, leaving four children—William, Ann, Betsey and James A., of whom William is the only one now living. Mrs. Barker is a daughter of William B. and Elizabeth Cory, who were natives of New Hampshire, living there till after their marriage when they removed to Lower Canada. Mr. Barker's Grandfather Henderson was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. He was one of the old settlers in Vermont, in which State he resided till his death. In politics Mr. Barker is a Republican. He has served his township as trustee for one year, and has also filled the office of school director and road supervisor. He and his wife are members of the Free-Will Baptist church.

I am researching the CARNES, WHEELER families of Dunkerton area. Other names are CLUBINE, BARKER, CORY, BARTHOLOMEW, BUTTERFIELD, BLUHM. It seems like the entire Fairview Cemetery was related. Anyone with knowledge of the area or researching there?

I am looking for the final resting place of children of Stephen Adams COLBURN and Mary Ann PECK. Stephen and Mary Ann were living in Waterloo, Blackhawk County, Iowa in 1866 to 1868 and again from about 1878 to about 1881. One of their children, Francis Tallcutt [Talcott] was born 27 July 1867 and died 12 Sep 1867. If anybody has come across this child in a cemetery in the area or can suggest where I might look for him, I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you, Jack Branyan

Sharon, Please excuse me while I wipe the egg off my face: Embarrassed! I'm sorry to have misled you, but after double checking this morning, I learn that my Schweingruber married Henry HELD and not Henry HELMS. The pictures I have are of Bertha and Ida Schweingruber. As young sisters they came to America from Switzerland in 1887. I'm sure one of the pictures is of Bertha in her wedding dress and taken at the Fritz Studio in Waterloo. According to the 1900 census, she married Henry Held in 1895 and was divorced by 1910. Judging from the available census records, sisters Bertha and Ida remained in Waterloo where they raised Bertha's daughters, Lucille, Mildred, and Alma (Lena) Held. Several years ago, on some genealogy site, I believe I read that Mildred Held married a Lee. Nancy (Schwinegruber) Moore
