    1. Strubel and Full Families
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vk.2ADE/1537.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Jan, Please bear with me. This will be a little longwinded. My woking theory is that Eva (Mrs. Charles) Strubel was a daughter of Joseph and Margaret Full. It's said they had 14 children, but I haven't found a proper list of names. Joseph, Margaret and nine younger family members arrived in New York on the Carolus Magnus on 13 June 1853. Joseph Full (27 September 1800-4 August 1861) is buried in the Theiss or Perkins Grove Cemetery, Sublette Tp., Lee, IL. Margaret Full (10 May 1802-12 February 1874) is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Metamora, Woodford, IL. (Great detective work by Ken Wiltz and Gil Theiss!) Ken Wiltz and I are trying to reconstruct the Full family--not easy given the thin pioneer records. We're certain about four children: -Margaret, of Sublette Tp., who married George Michael Lauer -Mary Josephine, of Metamora, who married Peter Joseph Wiltz (Ken's ancestors) -Teresa, of Minonk, IL, who married Michael Wiltz -Catherine of Sublette, who married George Stephenitch and Joseph Bettendorf How does Eva Strubel fit in? The 1860 census lists Charles and Eva's family directly under the family of Peter and Josephine Wiltz. (Worth Tp., Woodford, IL) Both men were brickmakers; they obviously worked together. Another similarity is that both wives were born in Bavaria. Sisters? Eva was 27 in 1860. Eva Full, one of the Carolus Magnus immigrants, was 20 years old seven years earlier. There's other hints as well. In the same news column as Catherine Bettendorf''s obituary, it's reported that "Mrs. Joe Friedel and Mrs. Peter Roser [sic], from Waterloo, Ia., were here to visit their cousins, the Lauers, Fluehrs and Bettendorfs." The married names of two Strubel daughters are misspelled, but I imagine they were in Sublette for the funeral. And Eva Strubel's maiden name is Tull on her death record; that's awful close to Full. Other possible children of Joseph and Margaret Full are: -Kunigunda, of Sublette Tp., IL and Ellinwood, KS, who married Adam Schmitt -Ferdinand, of Sublette, IL (my 2nd great-grandfather) -John N. Full, of Mendota, IL -Mary, of Sublette Tp. -John, of May Tp., Lee, IL, and Chicago, IL, who married Elisabeth Strubel (She disappeared before the 1870 census.) -Anna -August -Ann, of Sublette Tp. -Benjamin, of Sublette Tp., IL, Metamora Tp., IL, Ellinwood, KS and Chicago, IL -Margaret, of Sublette Tp. This, of course, is a guestimate. Do you recognize any names? Incidently, there some Strubels buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Sublette, Lee, IL: -John Strubel, 19 February 1833-3 March 1903 -Regina, his wife, 24 August 1844-4 March 1905 -Cathrena (Strubel) Lauer, 8 November 1826-15 September 1876 -Andreas Lauer, her husband, 8 July 1819-3 March 1898 You might look for obituaries published in the Mendota and Amboy, IL newspapers. There, that covers the high points. Feel free to contact me directly to discuss this further. joe_ehleringer@yahoo.com

Surnames: Allen, Moffitt Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Vk.2ADE/1770.1 Message Board Post: Cornelia wrote, "... marriage between William Allen and Sarah Jane Moffitt circa 1861. we know that they had two children, Harriett Helen b. 1862 and Flora b. 1863. Sarah is said to have d. 18 Aug 1866. William is assumed to have d. in the Civil War. we know absolutely nothing about William and would love to find anything on him to seperate him from all the other William Allen's in Iowa." Cornelia, although I don't have access to any marriage records for Black Hawk county, I thought I'd take a look at these families in some other resources. I don't see a Sarah MOF*T or a William ALL*N in Black Hawk county in the 1860 census index. Is there some documentation or tradition that leads you to believe they might have been married in Black Hawk county? What is your reason for believing that this particular William ALLEN served and may have died in the Civil War? I see 9-year-old Hattie ALLEN with her MOFFITT grandparents (Wm. and Martha) and uncles Frederick and Frank in Black Hawk county in the 1870 census. In 1860, the MOFFITTs (Wm C, Martha, William C. Jr., Frederick, Frank) were in Ripley, Butler County, Iowa; no Sarah is listed in this household. If you haven't already located Sarah J. MOFFITT in the 1860 census, you might entertain the possibility that she was married prior to the 1860 census enumeration, and perhaps in Butler county rather than Black Hawk county. In 1850, Martha, Sarah J., William C. (Jr.) and Frederick E. are enumerated in Hinsdale, Berkshire, MA, and 11-year-old Sarah's birthplace is given as MA. Unless you have other reason to eliminate the possibility, consider the chance that Sarah and William might have married in MA (or somewhere between MA and IA) prior to 1860, then migrated to Iowa with/after Sarah's parents prior to Harriett Helen's birth circa 1861.

Why do you suspect that Eva Tull's name was actually Full? I would appreciate any additional information that you might have. Thanks.

Shirley, It's not clear from your query whether your HOWERTON family was connected to Black Hawk County, Iowa, which is the subject of this message board. You may have more luck posting your query in county message boards for areas in WI and IL where the Sauk and Fox tribes resided. In trying to locate your ancestor George Washington HOWERTON, it would be helpful if you could provide the name of his child, grandchild, g-grandchild, etc., who form the descendant line from him to you. In that way he can be located in censuses. If it's true that George married an Indian woman, and if the census enumerations are correct, her race may be indicated as "In" and this may also be true of their children. If you aren't already aware of it, you may be interested in the following HOWERTON family history, which does mention Chief Black Hawk. http://howertonheritage.com/HowertonHeritageWinter1997.htm Good luck with your research.

    3. Perhaps the Northeastern Iowa Genealogical Society in Waterloo, Iowa can be of assistance. Waterloo is in Black Hawk County, of course, and they have a wealth of information as well as volunteers to help research. Also the Waterloo Public Library also is full of Iowa history. Another source is the Iowa State Historical Society in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA. They are a huge and very organized organization and no doubt has all the information you want. They also have a great website. Good hunting. 3. Have you contacted the Northeast Iowa Genealogical Society in Waterloo Iowa? or the Cedar Falls Historical Society? Both of them carry a great deal of information and no doubt volunteers will help you find your Cedar Falls info. I don't know but am betting that each has a website or at the very least, you can find them through internet current directories for each city.
