It is the reason I tried to contact the cemetery to find out if he was interred there. The obit I have for her indicated she was to be buried in Rose Hill. Would you like a copy of the obit? It is about 0.5 MB. Bill

Can't imagine why - when they were living in Waterloo and his first wife was buried in Cedar Falls. It's probably a case of nobody getting around to have the death date put on his stone. However, Grandma Katie is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, IA, but next to her first husband, Henry Landau. You might want to check up there for Charles W. Champlin. Unfortunately, I'm unable to shed any light on Mary Sheley/Shelley.

It says he died 28 Jun 1935. Since there is no death date on the stone in Greenwood Cemetery, I don't know if he was buried there or not. He apparently was living in Waterloo at the time of his death. I am most interested in the burial of Mary Sheley. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery according to her obit. They had no record of it, but I later found that I should have asked about Mary Shelly, perhaps. The 1930 census gives an age for him that would give a birth year around 1867, but earlier ones agree with the 1861 on the grave stone.

    2. I am looking for a death record for Annis (aka Annice, Anna) Morris. She died around April 14, 1911 or 1912 in Waterloo or Cedar Falls area. Her obituary states that she was a member of the Christian Church and that she was buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Written request for death certificate came back - no record. I haven't located Oak Ridge Cemetery or been able to determine what is meant by the "Christian Church" . Any help will be appreciated. KM

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Vk.2ADE/1773 Message Board Post: There is a plot for Charles W. Champlin in the Greenwood Cemetery off College Street. There is a large stone with: CHAMPLIN, CHARLES W. 1861 LOTTIE L, HIS WIFE, 1857 - 1919 There is a small stone with LOTTIE L and another small stone with MARY SHELLEY. I am trying to determine: (1) is Charles buried there? (2) who is Mary Shelley? Since there are no dates on the small stones, I am hoping interment dates can resolve the questions for me. I am guessing that the Mary Shelley stone may be for Mary Sheley, Lottie's mother. She died 28 Mar 1900. I sent a SASE to them over a month ago asking for this information, but have received no reply. Perhaps it is not as simple as looking up the data on the plot. If someone will give them a call and find out for me, you will have my undying gratitude. Email: wrdraper@aol.com

I believe that I found Edwin's death record at the Black Hawk County courthouse, with a death date of January 1, 1925. There was also a Mrs. Elizabeth Miller and the death date was given as December 3, 1931. Both records were short on detail and both records were found in Book 4 1/2. I checked both the Waterloo newspaper and the Cedar Falls newspaper for both individuals and was unable to locate their obituaries.

    3. In the 1925 census of the town of Jesup, Buchanan County, Iowa Elizabeth Miller age 78 is living with her daughter, Lottie and her husband Charles Liebert. Spring Creek is nearest to Buchanan County and I'd suggest you contact the genealogical society there. BCGS Attn: Cathy or Mickey PO Box 4 Independence, IA 50644 Also send a SASE and about $12.00 for an hour of research and a few copies. They will let you know what they find. They have extensive records there including marriage, death, birth and obituary cards. All local newspapers and probates, also. I was looking at the 1856 state census extract when I mentioned S. J. Moffitt. well, I will dig deeper, later this week, and see if I can discover where Sarah is. I know I've tried before, but it's always good to go back and check everything again. CW's only a supposition. no proof at all. I've looked at the sailors and soldiers site, but there are so many Wm Allen's from Iowa picking out the right one is some headache. I'll check with the v. r. office, see if they can discover anything. we have nothing on Wm Allen except that a family record book says that was his name and that he m. great grandmother Sarah Jane. no dates. no places. just his name and hers, and her date of death without a place. the family was in Black Hawk for some time, into the 1940's from one branches death dates and places of death, but they aren't in the 1895 Black Hawk census. one branch is in the Butler 1895 census.

Sarah is with her parents and siblings in the 1860 in Butler, as S. J. Moffitt, so we know she wasn't m. by 1860. ..." Cornelia, your post seems to say that you do, then that you do not, have Sarah in the 1860 census. If Wm. C. and Martha were Sarah's parents, then she is not with them in Ripley Butler IA in 1860. Only the three sons are enumerated with their parents. "my supposition is that Wm Allen d. in the CW because the only record we have of him is his two children, Harriett Helen (aka Hattie) b. 1862, and Flora b. 1863 (I have full b. dates for these girls) are their only children ..." But the dates of the children's births have little if anything to do with the likelihood that their father died in the war; do you have any documented reason to believe that he even served in the military? Have you contacted the Black Hawk county vital records office to inquire whether they have marriage, birth and death records from the 1860s? I was in Cedar Falls last October and had occasion to call, and they were very helpful.

I'm going back over the censi to refresh what happened to Sarah, if I ever found her in the 1860-I made no note of it either way, so it's another re-work I'll have to do. for one, I was writing late at night without notes in front of me-never the best idea.... yes, the family was not yet in Black Hawk. I should have posted my request in Butler as well. Sarah is with her parents and siblings in the 1860 in Butler, as S. J. Moffitt, so we know she wasn't m. by 1860. my supposition is that Wm Allen d. in the CW because the only record we have of him is his two children, Harriett Helen (aka Hattie) b. 1862, and Flora b. 1863 (I have full b. dates for these girls) are their only children. his name and nothing more about him is in a family book. I have it that Sarah d. in 1866. that is why "Hattie" is with her grandparents in 1870 (Flora didn't survive her first year.) it's difficult when someone's biggest records occur within a 10 year time frame. m. abt 1861, children b. '62 and '63, d. in '66. makes a person very elusive unless they were in an area where records were well kept. still haven't found their burial-there's an interesting burial for a Sarah Allen, though. I've never found the full extraction....date doesn't mesh at all with what we have for a death date for our Sarah.... Cedar County Cemetery Records Page: 5 Name: Sarah Allen Death Date: 03 Jun 1860 Age: 23 yrs. Cemetery: Rose Hill Town: Pioneer Comment: (old part) (She was the wife of Wm.
