Its most important holdings are the microfilm copies of the census and local newspapers. Census records available: Federal: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1910, 1920 State: 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925 Newspapers: Vinton <underline>Eagle</underline> from 10 Jan 1855 to 25 Feb 1926 Benton County <underline>Times</underline> from 7 Jun 1888 to (after becoming the Cedar Valley Times 30 Nov 1987; later issues available as hardcopy Benton County <underline>Democrat</underline> three reels, beginning October 1856 It does have a reader/printer; copies from film are $.25 Copies of hardcopy materials are $.20 It also has, of course, the four county histories, as well as copies of the Centennial histories of Atkins, Belle Plaine, Cedar Township (Mt. Auburn), Garrison, Newhall, Shellsburg, and Van Horne. Unfortunately, the staff is not equipped to handle research requests, although they will answer questions about whether a particular item is in the collection. They usually turn research requests over to a private individual, but courtesy would suggest a donation for his time.
