Congratulations to John Shuck for having his pedigree published in the "Benton County Backtracker"! (the Benton County Genealogical Society newsletter) John is the fourth generation Shuck born in Benton County, Iowa. Other Benton surnames in John's pedigree are Miner and Clewitt. -- Sue

I agree with your opinion of Sue's work on the IAGenWeb Benton County site. She is doing a wonderful job! It's great when Historical and Genealogical Societies want to work with the USGenWeb Project. Cooperation can benefit both the researchers AND the societies. Most societies are seeing their membership increasing due to exposure on the various USGenWeb pages. Those societies that post surname indexes to some of their publications are particularly noticing increased sales in that area, as people are much more likely to purchase a volume when they know their surnames of interest are included. This list is fairly quiet most of the time, but many are working on various projects, like federal census trascriptions, to post at the Benton County site, so don't let the lack of e-mail lead you to believe there isn't interest! :-) Again, welcome, and we'll look forward to working with you as well. Hello, Sue! I'm one of the directors of the Benton County Historical Society, and have just accessed your webpage for the first time. Outstanding job! I knew of your project through Trudi Evans, but hadn't any luck finding it from the information you had given her, and had to work through four of the major search engines until I found it. The first thing I'd like to note is that the BCHS has changed their research hours from Friday to Wednesday, still 1-4. Secondly, I'd be willing to volunteer to be the e-mail contact for the BCHS until such time as we establish our own account. Please have your readers put "BCHS Research" in the subject line so I can have Eudora filters direct the message appropriately. In general, I'd also be willing to answer specific, focussed, queries concerning our holdings, or their contents, (a single name in a single source type of thing) as a courtesy to all. However, more elaborate questions involving more than a few minutes of time I'd feel obligated to turn over to the Research Committee, who would probably ask for a donation. They've just started active work again after a hiatus for most of the year for reorganization and relocation within the Horridge House, and I don't believe they've established any fixed fee structure as of yet. I wish we were able to respond to all requests without charge, but we are an all-volunteer organization that is perennially short on funds. I hope that we will also be able to make more materials available to you to put on the web. I have a scanner here at home that I'm just learning to use, and am intending on getting some decent OCR software for it soon. We have started the project of putting our cemetery files into a computer database, and I may be able to send you those files--there is here, however, a question of approval by the Board of Directors, the issue being whether or not there should be a charge for this material, given the massive amount of volunteer effort that went into the original transcriptions and the subsequent effort of typing it all into the database. As you'll see, I've signed up for the mailing list and sent a copy of this message there. I look forward to working with you on this fine project. Thom Carlson
William H AVERY born about 1840 NY. Parents unknown. However he is buried in Mt Auburn Cemetery with wife Sarah TRIPP and a Thompson AVERY who may be his father or an uncle??? I do not know who Thompson's first wife was, but later he was married to Jemima TRIPP. These marriages took place in Kendall Co Ill in 1862 and 1865. They then came to Benton Co Ia. William and Sarah had children Allison, Melville, Frank, Eunice, Emma and Roy. Would appreciate any info on any of these names and would like to verify what relation Thompson and Jemima are to William H. If anyone has any info no matter how small, I would appreciate hearing from you. William H has been a real challenge because there were several William AVERY and several Sarah TRIPP in Illinois and it has been difficult to trace which ones married each other and came to Iowa. HELP!!! Also then I have more dates and info to share for anyone else interested in these names.
Searching WILCOXON, FOOTE, PAUL, HALL, MARTIN in Belle Plaine, Benton, CO, IA. I will share information. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you. Shirley Wilcoxon@ix.netcom.com

I, too, still await the release of the 1860 software. It's now in beta testing, and should be ready in the near future. A question comes to mind concerning your page...Are those "townships" of your assigned Benton county? That's a neat idea, to break down your county and have help doing it. The later years, after 1840 is pretty large projects for one to try to do alone. Good luck, and I'll surely notify you of the software when it's done. Ken Hollingsworth >
