Dear Friends, James was 19 on the 1880 US census in Michigan. A family letter states he came back from Iowa for his brother's funeral sometime in the early part of this century. Is someone researching this surname in Iowa perhaps or possibly have a referral/recommendation? Best regards, Dennis Lyon

Hopefully we'll be having the complete 1860 census on line soon! I'm very excited about this and want to thank everyone already involve for their continued support and determination to see this project completed. Hello - While researching my HIBBEN family I purchased a 1990 reprint of 'History of Norway, Iowa' which was compiled in 1963 for the Centennial. On page 152 there is a brief genealogy of GEORGE W. HIBBEN and his decendants and a photo of him. Unfortunately, the reprint produced a completely blacken photo. I am hoping that someone might know where the original of the photo is filed, or might have an original copy of the book and be willing to photo copy the page for me. I believe current copy machines would provide better results. Please contact me at GHIBBEN@aol.com if you can be of assistance. Thank you.

Hi, I am looking for any and all information on the STATES in Benton Co. >From family records it is believed that my ancestor George Lewis States and his wife Eliza moved to Benton Co. IA in 1855 or 1856 from Ashland Co. OH, where they acquired a farm, possibly near the Iowa Co.line on which they lived until they removed to Nebraska in 1869-70. They were recorded in the IA 1860 Census in Marengo TWSP of Iowa Co. but family notes indicate four of their nine children were born in Blairstown of Benton Co. George may have held a school board office or related position. I need some direction in how to proceed with my search. Jack.

I just obtained the 1911 History of Benton County today and would like to do look-ups in it for everyone, but alas! It has a very incomplete index of the people and photos. Does anyone know if these books have been re-indexed? I'll still do look-ups, just be patient with me!! :) I also received the 'Johann Daniel Kraling Family History' that I'll do look-ups in. J(ohann) Martin KÖHL b. 1787 in Eichstettin, Baden, d. 1869 in Fremont Twp., Benton Co., Iowa. Married to: Catharina SCHMIDT (b. 1788 in Bahlingen, Baden, d. 1879 in Fremont Twp. They arrived in US ca. April 1856 New Orleans. They were buried on the family homestead (owned by daughter and son-in-law), now known as Raetz Cemetary, 2 mi west of Atkins. I have been unable to find church records of the burial of Martin and Catharina at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church. Many of their descendants were with the New Jerusalem church. Did that church keep a burial register? Where could I find it? The children are believed to be: 1. Johann Martin KÖHL (1812 - 1814). 2. Catharina KÖHL (1814 - Unknown). 3. Anna Marie KÖHL (1817 - 1871) Arrived in US on 23 March 1857 at New York, on "Mercury" from Havre, with her husband, George ENGEL (b. 1816 in Friesenheim, Baden, d. 1870), and most of their children. The Engel family settled a few miles East of the Koehls, s. 17 in Clinton Twp., Linn Co. Descendants include HUBER, KIMM, KRAHLING, RINDERSKNECHT, SAHA, SCHIRM, TIEDE, WENDEL, many of whom lived in Benton County. 4. Maria Magdalena KÖHL (1819 - 1894). Anna married Jacob GASSER (1819 - 1888). Descendants include SCHLOTTERBACK, RAETZ. 5. George Jacob KÖHL (1823 - 1877). Married to Anna Maria ACKERSMANN (1829 - Unknown). This family may have moved on to South Dokota. 6. Anna Barbara KÖHL (1827 - 1884). Married to Peter FRITZ (1824 - 1902). Descendants include GERBER, LENSCH. I am trying to locate descendants of any of the above. Am also interested in any photos of these individuals of which I could get negatives or scanned copies made.
