    1. RE: [IAALLAMA-L] Volunteer Needed
    2. Jim Larson
    3. Hi, I have been doing research into the Norwegian settlers in Paint Creek and surrounding townships. My primary focus has been on the years 1850 - 1856. I believe my familiarity with the Norwegian names would be helpful in transcribing the 1854 census. I would be willing to proofread you transcriptions for the Norwegians in Paint Creek, Jefferson, Taylor and Makee townships. Let me know if I can help, Jim Larson [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: PJU [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 11:57 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [IAALLAMA-L] Volunteer Needed Is anyone willing to help to interpret and proofread some transcriptions of the 1854 state-census of Allamakee County? Some parts of some letters are missing (faded) so, for example, it is difficult to distinguish between the letters "h" and "k", "n" and "r", etc. As some background information, I have volunteered to transcribe the 1854 census under the auspices of the <www.us-census.org> genealogy site. That has been tough going as parts of some names are not totally legible. I have never been in Allamakee and thus am between a rock and a hard place in recognizing what might be easy for a long-time native of the area. I propose to e-mail a copy of the census and request that a viewer skim down the list and tell me what might be a correct name for those that are in doubt. I have paper copies (from microfilm) of the 12 townships in existence during 1854. Each has about 100 to 150 names. Some copies are very legible; others are not. I suspect that an eye-ball skim of each township would take about 10-minutes with some other time required to type suggested interpretations and return the e-mail. I would them review the hand-written copy to determine if the suggestion really matches the actual writing. If anyone has old plat maps for any township, their review might be easier. So far, I've completed Franklin, Jefferson and Lafayette Townships. Lansing is the one that is now driving me up-the-walls (so to speak). All I can offer in return is to add your name, as a proof-reader, to the header of each township as it will appear on the Internet. If you're wondering why someone in Florida is transcribing an Iowa census, it is because several people in Waukon helped me to find some ancestral information (my mother, an O'Brien, was born in French Creek in1892), so I'm now trying to return the favor for someone else. ........PAT (Florida) ==== IAALLAMA Mailing List ==== You can search the archives of IAAllama-L messages by going to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and typing the list name--IAALLAMA.
