Devitt, 81, of Waukon, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church-Hanover. Fr. Joseph Schneider officiated. Burial was in St. Mary’s-Hanover cemetery. Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon was in charge of arrangements. Harold was born May 28, 1924, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Michael Devitt and Mary (Donovan) Devitt. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1941. Harold served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946, seeing time in the South Pacific, Okinawa, and the Philippines. Later, Harold followed the harvest in Montana and North Dakota for several years. He operating the family farm from 1954 to 1961. From 1966 to 1988 he worked for the US Postal Service at the Main Branch in Oak Park, Ill. Survivors include four sisters, Agnes Finnegan, Mabel Hayes, and Margaret Higgins, all of Oak Park, and Hazel Grayson of La Grange Park, Ill., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Mary (Donovan) Devitt; two brothers, Leo and Martin Devitt; and two sisters, Alice Delaney and Loretta Hancock. Casketbearers were David Garbski, Dick Delaney, Harold Hancock, Lorne Mayer, Dan Delaney, and Mike Delaney. Source: Waukon Standard, Waukon, Iowa, 11 January 2006
