North, 88, of the Meth-Wick Community in Cedar Rapids and formerly of Waukon died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 12 at St. Patrick Church in Waukon with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Dorchester. Hanson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Helen was born February 24, 1918 in Dorchester to Clem and Margaret (Schwartzhoff) Schulte. After attending local schools, she graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque in 1935 and from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL in 1938. She was employed as a registered nurse in Chicago and Nashville, TN. From 1941 to 1945, Helen served as a nurse in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was stationed in Georgia, North Africa, Italy and France. On discharge from the service she attended Gregg Business College and Northwestern University in Chicago, earning her certification as a medical record administrator. In this capacity she worked in Chicago, California and at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon from 1958 until her retirement in 1985. She also worked for Waukon Medical Associates and as a consultant for several area hospitals. She married John D. North in San Jose, CA July 7, 1947. They were later divorced. Surviving are her five children, John (Chris) of Cedar Rapids, Laura (Mike) Cira of Marion, Elaine North of Davis, CA, Kathy (Rey) Almazan of San Antonio, TX, and Thomas of Amsterdam, the Netherlands; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clement Schulte; and sisters Veronica Schulte and Elizabeth Schulte. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Meth-Wick Community or St. Patrick Church, Waukon. Waukon Standard, February 21, 2007 Submitter is not related and has no further information.
