Allamakee county sheriff's officers say Falck was heading east around 8:30 a.m. when he pulled to the shoulder preparatory to making a u-turn on the highway. A following car was driven by Eleanor Learn, 66, Austin, MN. She thought the Falck car was going to stop on the shoulder, but when the u-turn attempt was made, her car struck the Falck car broadside on the driver's side. Falck's wife Nellie, 60, received multiple fractures in the accident and was also brought to Waukon's hospital, where she remained a patient in good condition Monday. A daughter Rebecca, 21, also brought to the hospital, was treated and released, as was the driver of the other car. This was the first traffic fatality of 1980 in Allamakee county.
