The record year for traffic deaths in Iowa was 1951 when 625 persons were killed. The 612th Traffic fatality was Wayne Sweat, who farmed with his father about 20 miles south of Waukon. Sweat was killed when the car in which he was riding went out of control on Volley hill about 14 miles southwest of Waukon. He was pinned under the machine which overturned in a ditch. The driver of the car Elden Dahl of Postville, and three other passengers suffered only minor injuries. It was the third traffic death of the year in Allamakee county.
