Hitner, 67, of Waukon, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Hanson Funeral Home in Waukon with the Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiat­ing. Burial was in Rossville Ce­metery. He was born Jan. 30, 1931 in Ada, MN to John and Susie (Keppler) Hitner. Howard re­ceived his education in Minne­sota schools. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. Howard was a member of the American Legion. Howard was a mechanic and school bus driver. Nov. 25, 1960 he married Beverly Huckstad in Waukon. Survivors include his wife; three children, John, LaSandra Howes and Cindy Johll, all of Waukon; two grandchildren; three sisters, Rose Geller, Della Kroshus and Marcella Lushen; and two brothers, Joe and Bill Hitner. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Edith Bitker; and five brothers, Emil, Robert, Louis, Melvin and Paul. Casket bearers were Legion members, Orville Bratrud, Wil­liam Byrnes, Rupert Caballero, John Regan, and Otto and Virgil Thorstenson. Source: Allamakee Journal ~ 2 December 1998
