Jeff, along with his brother, Scott, 22, and parents, Gary and Marlene Houg, were boating in the Little Swift Slough near Harpers Ferry when they were forced ashore due to heavy rain about 3:15 p.m., according to a report released by the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department. After going ashore all four were struck by lightning, according to the report, with the father then bringing them to the state boat landing at Harpers Ferry. The Allamakee County Sheriffs Department, Harpers Ferry and Waterville Rescue Squads and officers from the DNR were sent to the location. The family was then transported by ambulance to Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. Jeffrey Houg was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Gary and Scott Houg were both admitted, while Marlene Houg was treated and released. Officials at the hospital indicated that both Gary and Scott would be released Monday morning.
