"Benny" Ernst, 82, of La Crosse, WI, died Satur­day, Dec. 3, 1988 at his home. He was born August 1, 1906 to Eugene and Nancy (Holiday) Ernst in Wadena, IA. He married Laurene H. Maher on June 14, 1934 in Iowa City. Ernst graduated from the Uni­versity of Iowa Medical School. He moved to La Crosse and served his internship at St. Francis Medi­cal Center. He then moved to New Albin, having a general practice there for ten years, before return­ing to La Crosse in 1947. He served his residency in surgery in Iowa City, IA. He served as a gen­eral surgeon and family practioner as a staff member of St. Francis Medical Center and in 1979 he joined the Family Health Center as both teacher and physician. He had been a past president of the La Crosse County Medical Society. He was a member of the La Crosse Country Club, Elks Lodge #300, and a Founding member of the La Crosse Boys Club. He also sponsored promising nursing and medical students at Marquette University. In 1984, he was inducted in the 50 Year Club of the State Society of Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife, Laurene; four daughters, Joyce Puk of Cedar Rapids, IA, Shirley Pickel of Palos Verdes, CA, Colleen Gardner of Palm Beach, CA, and Deb­bie Rankin of Arvada, CO; four­teen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister. Funeral prayer serices were held Wednesday, December 7, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's, the Workman Cathedral, La Crosse, WI. The Rev. J. Floyd Dwyer officiated. Entombment was in the Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. The family requests memorials go to the St. Francis Foundation. The Blaschke Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
