Iowa law states that the death of a person must be reported within 72 hours. The charge grew out of the death of Mrs. Ingalls newborn baby. About 2 weeks ago, Mrs. Ingalls and her husband, Henry, brought the body of the baby to the sheriff’s office here. A coroner’s jury ruled that the baby died on or about Dec. 18, shortly after birth. Apparently the baby had been born at the couples’ home since there is no record of the birth at the hospital. The Allamakee county grand jury was called to fine out whether the baby died of natural causes or foul play. The jury ruled that the baby had died of natural causes. However, the jury recommended that lesser charges be filed by the sheriff’s office because the body of the baby was kept in an out building on the Ingalls farm for about 2 weeks. Cedar Rapids Gazette; 6 Feb 1960 Transcribed by Diana Henry Diedrich Note: A unnamed infant son is buried in May’s Prairie Cemetery showing birth and death date as 18 Dec 1959. The surname in Woodmansee is spelled Ingles.
