Monday August 20th, A. C. Johnson of Fairhaven a man forty-two years of age, died at his home in that town at 3:30 this morning. He was kicked in the face by a vicious horse August 15th, leaving him in bad shape. Pneumonia set in shortly after the accident and he died as stated. He was a married man besides his wife leaves three children. The funeral will be held from the St. Augusta, Church tomorrow.

Submitter has no further information. ELDO JOHN GERICKE 1898-1987 Funeral services for Eldo Gericke were held Monday, December 21, 1987, 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiated. Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Eldo John Gericke was born April 30, 1898 in Allamakee County, Iowa. He died Saturday morning, Dec. 19, 1989 in Community Memorial Hospital at Postville. He was baptized September 3, 1898 and confirmed by Rev. Kuehne in 1913. He attended the West Grove School. September 24, 1924 he married Ceasil Schutte. They had 3 children. They began farming north of Luana and he also drove a bus for the Luana School for 3 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. In 1929 they moved to a farm northeast of Castalia. During the mid-1930's they moved to Postville where Eldo was employed in various capacities. He was the town marshall for 5 years and a night watchman for Iowa Turkey Products for several years. He retired in 1980. In 1986 he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha, his step-father, Wendell Wagner, a daughter, Marlene May, who died in infancy, a son, LaMont, 4 half-brothers, LeRoy, Arthur, Harry, Willard and a half-sister, Ethel. Survivors are his wife, Ceasil, a son, Vernon and his wife Marty of Cedar Rapids, a daughter-in-law, Fern and her husband, Floyd Kephart, Monticello; 4 granddaughters and 5 great-grandchildren. Eldo and Ceasil had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1974 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and their 60th with an open house at their home. Casket bearers were Leo Morch, Lyle Sebastian, Millard Bilden, Dale Bilden, Rueben Hoth and Clarence Everman.

The Reverend Charles W. Miller officiated. Joann Martins was the organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. Ceasil Lizzie Minnie Gericke, daughter of Fred and Lena (Schroeder) Schutte, was born January 25, 1901 in Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. She died Friday, October 27, 1995 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 94 years, 9 months, and 2 days. She was baptized May 12, 1901 by the Reverend P. L. Bockelmann in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville and confirmed there on September 5, 1915 by the Reverend E. Schmidt. Ceasil attended a country school near her home and also the Luana Consolidated School. On September 23, 1924, she was married to Eldo John Gericke by the Reverend Schmidt at Postville, Iowa. Lillian Meier Moon and Eldo Schutte were their attendants. They had three children. Eldo and Ceasil farmed for many years between Luana and Postville. During the mid-1930's, they moved to Postville. Ceasil had been employed at the Postville Telephone office, Huebner's, Koevenig's and Harold Schroeder's grocery store, and then had worked in the kitchen at Community Memorial Hospital in Postville for seven years. She enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and liked to have them stop in for coffee. Ceasil had a special love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eldo, who died in 1987, a daughter, Marlene May Gericke, who died in infancy, a son, LaMont Gericke and three brothers, Louie Schutte, Arnold Schutte and Emmet (Pete) Schutte. Surviving is a son, Vernon Gericke and his wife, Marty, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Fern Gericke Kephart and her husband, Floyd, of Monticello, IA; 4 grandchildren, Lynda Martin of Decorah, IA, Laurel and her husband, Dean Ohloff, of Postville, Susan and her husband, Steve Rogers, of Danville, IA, and Karen and her husband, Lee Frantz, of Derby, KS; 7 great grandchildren, Aaron, Seth and Arica Ohloff, Michael and Scot Rogers and Courtney and Allison Frantz and a brother, Eldo Schutte and his wife, Verla, of Postville. Gericke at the Schutte Funeral Home and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. F. R. Ludwig, officiating. Burial was in the Postville cemetery. Mr. Gericke passed away at his farm home five miles northeast of Postville on Tuesday of last week. Henry Fred Conrad Gericke, son of John Gericke and Maria Kling Gericke, was born July 30, 1886, in Clayton County, and departed this life January 18, 1949 at his late home northeast of Postville, aged 62 years. Mr. Gericke was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church, also in the St. Paul's congregation of Postville, by the late Rev. P. E. Bockelmann, on March 31, 1901. Mr. Gericke spent his entire life as a resident of this community. He attended the Cedar Rapids business College in 1903 [could be 1905]. Throughout his entire adult life he farmed the farm in Post township about five miles northeast of Postville where he died. Left to mourn his passing are the following seven brothers and sisters: John, of Postville; Ida, Mrs. Curtis Meyer, of Postville; Fred, of Postville; Amelia, Mrs. Otto Sander, of Postville; Matilda, who made her home with Henry on the farm; Amanda, Mrs. Will Sebastian, of Luana and Senda, Mrs. Ben Morch, of Postville. The record year for traffic deaths in Iowa was 1951 when 625 persons were killed. The 612th Traffic fatality was Wayne Sweat, who farmed with his father about 20 miles south of Waukon. Sweat was killed when the car in which he was riding went out of control on Volley hill about 14 miles southwest of Waukon. He was pinned under the machine which overturned in a ditch. The driver of the car Elden Dahl of Postville, and three other passengers suffered only minor injuries. It was the third traffic death of the year in Allamakee county. Five other Allamakee county residents were injured, none critically. All were taken to Memorial Hospital, Waukon. They are; Virgil Welper, 22, son of Mrs. Welper; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Prestamon and Mrs. and Mrs. Kosbau, all of Jefferson township, south of Waukon. Everett Welper, another son, escaped uninjured. The Welpers, with Virgil driving the car, were headed north on the gravel road. The Prestamons and Kosbau, all passengers in the same car, were going south. Prestanon suffered a slight shoulder injury and Mrs. Prestamon suffered a fractured shoulder. Mrs. Welper is also survived by two other sons, one of whom is in the service. Allamakee Sheriff Neil Becker identified the dead man as David Lynn Anderson, 19, of Postville. He said the identification was confirmed by Andersons parents. Becker said the body will be taken to University hospitals in Iowa City where an autopsy will be performed to determine cause and time of death. Andersons body was found lying on its side by Charles Mason of Marquette. Sheriff Becker said he doesnt know yet if Andersons death was accidental or not, but there are other reports saying foul play is suspected. Sheriff Becker said it is his understanding the Anderson youth had just returned from the service. Becker said Andersons car was found several miles from the spot where the body was found. He said nothing at the scene of the car provided any information as to what may have happened. Authorities are conducting their investigation. Kester Dies After Crash New Albin Injuries received when her car collided with a Milwaukee freight train proved fatal early Sunday for Janice Colleen Kester, 18, daughter of the Robert Kesters of New Albin. Miss Kester died at 12:15 a.m. Sunday in Lutheran hospital, LaCrosse, Wis., about four hours after the accident at the north crossing in New Albin. Her car was thrown 100 feet after impact with the northbound train, reportedly traveling about 30 miles per hour. The death was Allamakee countys sixth traffic fatality of the year. A 1974 graduate of Knee high school at Lansing, Miss Kester was a student at Winnona (Minn.) Technical Institute. Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Louise at home, and paternal and maternal grandmothers, Mrs. W. E. Stevens of New Albin and Mrs. J. R. Welsh of Oelwein. A native of Union City township, he lived all his life on a farm in the township. He is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Halverson, to whom he was married Nov. 23, 1944. Other survivors are seven brothers, Eben, Lansing; Arthur and Frank, Dorchester, Charles and Joseph, New Albin; Leonard, Waukon; Stanley, British Columbia; and a sister, Mrs. George Weber, Dorchester.
