On December 25th, 1884 he was united in marriage at Pleasant Ridge to Ella J. Brooks. To this union were born eight children, one dying in infancy, one daughter, at the age of 14 years and Mrs. Maude Fish, who passed away in 1926. Those surviving are Willie Vern, Mrs. Earl Ralston, Allamakee Co., Arthur L. at home, John C. LaCrosse, Wis., and Mrs. Herb Frink, Allamakee Co. About 36 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Evans united with the Forest Mills United Brethren church, and for their whole lifetime endeavored to live honestly, uprightly and in the fear of God. Mr. Evans will be remembered as a fair dealing, conscientious, friendly neighbor and made and kept a host of friends who will miss his genial smile, and ready tongue. Those who mourn his loss, beside the stricken wife and children mentioned above are one brother, John Evans of Oregon, three nieces, 10 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, besides a large number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday after noon, April 18th, 1933 in the Volney Methodist church, at two o'clock by the Rev. Louis H. Joslin, the pastor of the church. Burial was in the Smithfield cemetery.

Eells, who spent his boyhood in this vicinity, occurred Thursday at a sanitarium in Des Moines, where he had been receiving treatment for eight weeks for a nervous breakdown. He was born in Makee township February 5, 1878, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lenthel Eells, the former being a well known educator of this county and also served as county superintendent. Harry was engaged in teaching near Waterville when the Spanish-American war broke out, and gave up his work to enlist in Co. I on April 26,1898. The company was first stationed at Camp McKinley, Des Moines, and mustered into U.S. service on June 2, 1898. The regiment was sent to Jacksonville, Florida, and while there Harry was transferred to U.S. hospital service and served in that capacity until the close of the war when he received his discharged on May 13, 1899. Deceased was widely known in educational circles throughout the state and for several years was at the head of the rural educational department of the Iowa State Teachers college. In 1929 he delivered the Memorial Day address at Waukon. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Pearl Gould, and two children, a son LeClair and a daughter Ruth, a sister Mrs. Alta Knipe, New Hartford, Iowa, and a brother Donald of Oskaloosa. L. L. Martin, pastor of the United Bretheran Church of Castalia, officiating. Burial was made in the Frankville cemetery. Mrs. Padden passed away at the home of her son, Francis Padden, in Postville on January 1. She was 89 years of age at her death. Abbie Leetta Miller Padden, daughter of Oscar F. Miller and Lydia A. Beebe Miller, was born at Freeport, Iowa, July 9, 1859, and died at the home of her son, Francis Padden, Postville, January 1, 1949. Most of her life she has lived in Winneshiek county. Early in life she became a member of the Methodist church and took a part in its activities. She was married to Romeo Padden April 8, 1886. Since his death about thirteen years ago, her home has been with her son Francis most of the time. Surviving are her three children, Francis Padden of Postville, Herbert Padden of Waterloo, Lydia (Mrs. C. J. Jones) of Buena Park, California; three grandson, Oscar Padden of Dubuque, Lyle Padden of Kansas City, Richard Jones of Buena Park, California; five great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Brouillet of Castalia, and Sarah Miller of Frankville. Padden Funeral services were held at the Schutte Funeral Home Friday, August 31, at 2:00 p.m. for Francis Padden, who passed away August 28. The Rev. Walter T. Martin was in charge of the rites. Ray Douglass of Postville and Fred Grant of Decorah were in charge of the Odd Fellows rites at the service. Burial was in the Frankville cemetery. Oscar Francis Padden, son of Romeo and Lettie Padden, was born January 24, 1886, near Council Bluffs, Iowa. He died at the Postville Community Hospital, August 28, 1956 at the age of 70 years. He worked on farms around the Frankville vicinity in his younger days. He also worked with I. R. Hughes in well drilling. In 1905 he was married to Minnie Kraby and to this union one son Oscar was born. The mother passed away when Oscar was 11 months old. On October 21, 1914 he was married to Ruth Ferris of Church, Iowa. Oscar Padden was preceded in death by his father Romeo Padden in 1935 and by his mother Lettie Padden in 1949. He is survived by his wife, one son Oscar of Dubuque, Iowa; three grandchildren, one sister, Lydia, (Mrs. Charles Jones) and one brother, Herb, of Buena Park, California. He is also survived by many relatives and a host of friends. Francis was a very active member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges until he wasn't able to attend either. Ruth Augusta Padden, daughter of Kendrick Vail and Augusta (Miller) Ferris, was born March 3, 1893, at Waukon, Iowa. She died Monday, Oct. 15, 1990, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, IA. She received her education at Spring Grove, MN; Church, IA and was graduated from the Lansing High School on May 29, 1912 and received a teaching certificate from the Allamakee County Institute. From 1912 to 1922 she taught in the rural schools, including Church, Volney, Rossville, Frankville, and the Myron School. On Oct. 21, 1914 she married Oscar Francis Padden at the home of her parents at Church, IA. They farmed in the Allamakee and Winneshiek areas for several years. In 1945 they moved to Postville. During her years in Postville, Ruth had been employed by the Postville Locker, Groth Turkey Produce and the Postville Egg plant. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis, her stepson, Oscar Padden, 3 brothers, Ray, Floyd and Earl Ferris, and 2 sisters, Ethel Ferris and Harriet Hager. She had been an active member of the Rebekah Lodge, serving as District Deputy for District No. 3 in 1935. She had also served as Nobel Grand of the organization. She was also a member of the Joan of Arc Club at Burr Oak, IA. Casket bearers: John Padden, Joseph Reilly, Ted Bedward, Robert Reilly, Jim Jelinek, and Jim Slaughter. Honorary Casket Bearers: Rudolph Hartwig, Leo Foels, William Livingood, and A. Burr Cook.

Her first husband, Frank Robinson preceding her in death in 1943. On January 21, 1947 she was united in marriage to James Sires, who with one sister, Mrs. R.C. Turner of Yorba Linda, Calif., are left to mourn her loss. Her only brother, Oscar of California also preceded her in death. Mrs. Sires was an active member of Grace M.E. Church and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a woman of excellent character and her untimely passing will be deeply felt by a wide circle of friends. She was born February 7, 1922, in New Albin Iowa to Cornelius and Mary ‘May’ (Wall) Hammell. Agnes married Linus Murphy on Aug 24, 1943. Linus preceded Agnes in death on August 5, 1944. Agnes married Cyril Troendle on October 19, 1948. Cyril preceded her in death on October 19, 1990. The couple farmed in Allamakee County until moving to Wilmington Township in 1956. Agnes was active in the National Farmers Organization, Homemakers, 4-H and was an election judge for many years. Agnes was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish in Caledonia. Agnes is survived by her nine children, Rose (Steven) Sundem of Ramsey, MN; Phyllis Onstad of Altura, MN; Ronald (Monica) Troendle of Caledonia; Edward Troendle of Spring Grove; Mary (Dayne) Walker of Spring Grove; Steven (Cindy) Troendle of Moxie, WA; Fred (Sandra) Troendle of St. Charles; Alice Furey of Frazee, MN; and Patrick (Chris) Troendle of Lanesboro; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Agnes is also survived by three siblings, Margaret Blake, Mary Blake and Walter (Betty) Hammell. Agnes is preceded in death by infant sons Donald and Lawrence, and brothers John Hammell and Ray Hammell. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 am, Friday, January 12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia. She was the second daughter of John H. and Della (Stahl) Palmer. She passed away Thursday, October 5, 2006, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville,Iowa, at the age of 97 years. Elinor received her education in the rural schools near her home. She moved with her family to Waukon in 1919 and continued her education there, graduating from the Waukon High School with the class of 1926. Following graduation, Elinor secured a domestic job in the Quad Cities area where she worked for a year before returning to Waukon to attend the Waukon Junior College. After a year at the junior college, she relocated to take domestic service employment with several well-to-do families in Illinois, residing in the Lake Forest area just north of Chicago, immediately prior to the onset of World War II. During this period, she was briefly married to Loren DeBelle in 1932. During World War II and immediately afterwards, Elinor worked as a secretary for a firm that built railroad car components in Chicago. Following her marriage to Charles Earl Burt in 1949, Elinor continued with volunteer and secretarial work in Chicago through the 1950s and 1960s. In 1971 Earl and Elinor retired and moved to a rural home near Fayetteville, Arkansas. After Earl's death in 1975, Elinor continued to reside in Arkansas. In 1977 Elinor was married to Homer Lee Donaldson in Arkansas. Following Homer's death in 1987, Elinor moved to Postville in 1989, making her home with her sister, Felicia Dresser. Following Felicia's death in 1997, Elinor continued to live on the farm near Postville, until moving to Grand Meadows Glen Apartments in 2003. Since the summer of 2004, Elinor has been a resident at the Postville Good Samaritan Center. Elinor is survived by ten nieces and nephews, namely John Dresser of Marshalltown, Eunice Turner of Postville, Mary Wallin of Thousand Oaks, CA, Corinne Neel of Pine Top, AZ, H. Craig Morgan of Quartz Hill, CA, Kent F. Palmer of Fulton, MO, Dean C. Palmer of Minneapolis, MN, Lane W. Elinor was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, two sisters, Felicia Dresser and Theresa Gilbert, and her brother Wilson G. Palmer. Since relocating to Postville, Elinor joined the Community Presbyterian Church and participated in local clubs and activities, including the West Post Project Club and the Monday Club. He was never married and made his home with his mother near Smithfield, his father, two sisters and a brother having preceded him in death.
