A passing motor vehicle discovered a vehicle parked on the roadway with the engine running. Inside the parked vehicle was Edward Frank Zezulka, 28, of Dorchester, who had apparently been asphyxiated. He was taken by New Albin ambulance to the Waukon hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An investigation is continuing by the sheriff's department. He married Lulu Fruechte on Sept. 4, 1930. Rober was a lifelong resident of the Eitzen-Dorchester area and graduated from Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College. He farmed in the Eitzen-Dorchester area and operated a machine shop in the 1960s. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Eitzen, where he had been the organist and Sunday school teacher. Survivors are his wife; two sons, Norlin of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Ronald of Dorchester; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister and his stepmother, Minnie (Meiners) Rober. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Luke's United Church of Christ. The Rev. Lloyd Fried will officiate. September 8, 1942, he married Mary Bernadette (Bernie) Aylward at St. Joseph's Church in Harpers Ferry. Jim was very active with the Democratic Party and the Farmers Union. He was very proud of his Irish heritage, and many a friend and neighbor were entertained around the kitchen table with his stories and political anecdotes. He was blessed with good neighbors, who along with his family made it possible for him to remain on the family farm he so loved. Helen Leona Jones was born August 17, 1917 in the Sixteen area of rural Waterville, to Jerry Myer and Kate Clare (Kennedy) Hamm. She attended the Sixteen rural school. As a young girl, Helen spent considerable time helping care for her siblings during her mother's ill health and following her death. On November 13, 1934 she married Carlton Floyd Jones in Waukon. Except for a span of 7 years in the mid 1940s, they lived most of their life in the rural Waterville area. Helen was a busy homemaker and mother and maintained an interest in church activities at a number of different churches she and Carlton attended. Camping and traveling, music and dancing, and playing cards with the Golden Girls card club, were some of Helen's favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed spending time and playing various games with her family. She liked being with children and spent a lot of time helping to care for many of her grandchildren. Helen was very welcoming to guests and visitors, always making her home a comfortable stop for family and friends. Survivors include her husband Carlton of Waukon; three daughters, Frances (LeRoy) Bollman of Waukon, Barbara (Edward) O'Connell of Eastman, WI and Connie (Duane) Leuenberger of Decorah; 26 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice (Lester) Erickson of Rochester, MN; and a brother, Barton (Marilyn) Hamm of Waukon. Leona married Martin Cota in August of 1929 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. They farmed in the Harpers Ferry area and also owned and operated the Cota Sawmill for many years. In 1946 they moved into Harpers Ferry. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and its ladies circles. Leona enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends every morning at the Harpers Ferry Cafe. She also enjoyed cooking especially pies and spending time with family. Doris held teaching positions in Whitten, Eldora, Lansing, Osage, Little Cedar, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In addition to her teaching duties she served as principal at Lansing and Little Cedar. She married Ira E. Larson, September 30, 1944, in Shreveport, Louisiana. They had been classmates since the third grade and were high school sweethearts. Doris' life was devoted to her family and teaching. After her youngest child was in school, she returned to teaching and taught special education in Osage and lower elementary at the original Jackson and Polk Elementary Schools in Cedar Rapids. Retiring at age 70, Doris remained active in education by tutoring students in her home. Her entire life was spent motivating children to learn and to value the importance of education. In her retirement years she was a charter member of the New Horizons Band serving as publicity chairperson as well as playing trumpet. After losing her sight to macular degeneration in 2003 she continued her involvement with the band as a member of the percussion section. Doris remained active after retiring delivering the Cedar Rapids Gazette and regularly attending exercise classes at Witwer Senior Center. She was proud to be an American, a Republican, and a loyal supporter of the American military. Doris was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, a member of Retired Officers Association (ROA), Retired Teacher's Association, and the Bethany Luther Church group for Visually Impaired Persons (V.I.P.). After losing her sight, Doris and her pets remained in her home with the help of family, neighbors, friends, and caretakers. She lived her life through her faith and with determination. She was unwavering in her support and encouragement to both children and adults to do their very best. Instead of flowers, the family encourages memorials be made to the New Horizons Band of Cedar Rapids, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, The Kirkwood Foundation-The Ira E. Hoffman Marie G. Hoffman, 80, of Waukon, died Monday, November 27, 2006 at her home in Waukon, following a sudden illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Marie Gertrude Hoffman was born August 15, 1926 on her family's farm in rural Frankville, the daughter of John and Hertha Helen (Herman) Grotegut. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended the Frankville School through the 10th grade. March 5, 1942 she married Harold Charles Hoffman at Salem Church. Marie and Harold farmed the Grotegut home farm near Frankville for 20 years. Marie was a busy homemaker and mother, but also very involved with all aspects of the farming operation. In 1966 they moved to Lamont for a few years and returned to the farm in 1970. Marie then spent 20 years working as a medical and physical therapy aid at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. The last several years she has lived in Waukon. Marie was a very active member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she was an Elder on the Consistory and served in Women's Fellowship, Mary Circle, the Mission Board and various other committees. She was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was named their 2006 Member of the Year. Marie also volunteered her time at the Allamakee County Food Shelf and the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Marie stayed active throughout her life. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially doing yard work and gardening. Inside, she liked to crochet, bake, and spend time doing genealogy research. In 1971 she studied for and received her GED. She was a faithful visitor to friends who needed help and enjoyed going on outings and attending community events. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Chuck) Erding of Forest City and Donna (Steve) Scarpulla of Cave Creek, AZ; two sons, Marvin (Linda) of Cedar Rapids and Harold Jr. (Dixie) of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Hanson of Waukon. They moved to Oskaloosa, where Beulah worked at the overall factory and as a waitress at Mart & Jeff's. She also worked with Marvin in their business, the Iowa Walnut Timber Company. They returned to Waukon in 1978 and she once again worked at the button factory in Lansing until her retirement at age 70. Beulah enjoyed being outdoors, working in her garden and going hunting and fishing with Marvin. She also liked music and she and Marvin would often harmonize together as well as go dancing. Playing cards and following the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team were two of her other favorite pastimes. Beulah spent much of her life as a busy and dedicated mother who loved to cook for and take care of her family and was devoted to her grandchildren. Survivors include five children, Gary Sires of Ft. Harold Herbert Borcherding was born June 25, 1915 in rural Guttenberg, the son of Frederick and Milda (Lundt) Borcherding. January 21, 1942 he married Dorothy Irene Kickbush at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dubuque. Harold and Dorothy would have soon celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Harold spent his working life as a farmer. He farmed on his own at several places in Clayton County. After moving to Waukon in the late 1960s, he continued to be active in farming by helping on other people's farms doing work with livestock and building many fences. Harold loved the rural life and still enjoyed taking rides in the countryside. Harold served two terms on the Clayton County Extension Council, was a 4-H Leader for 11 years and was a current member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. He was an easy going and patient man with a good sense of humor who always seemed happy. Visiting with friends and being with his family were some of his favorite times and he could always be counted on to share a story. Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Waukon; two children, Lyle (Judith) Borcherding of Johnstown, PA and Lorna (Bernard) Kolsrud of Waukon; four grandchildren, Shann Borcherding of KY, Steve Borcherding of Anchorage, AK, Terry Kolsrud of Waukon and Stacey Kolsrud of San Francisco, CA; a great-grandson, Steven Borcherding Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. He was employed in poultry with Ames In-Cross and ag production on his own with Kruse Enterprise, and he also owned and operated Kruse's Sundry Store and worked in sales with Standard Oil Company, all in Roland. In 1969 Dave and Dorothy moved to New Albin. He traveled throughout the Midwest, working in sales with Hess & Clark until he retired in 1986. After the completion of their retirement home overlooking the Mississippi River, David and Dorothy moved to Brownsville in 1992. He was a member of St. Peter's Church in New Albin, where he served on the church council. He was also a member of Brownsville Green and was a supporter of the Commonweal Theater in Lanesboro, MN. Larkin, 77, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, January 1, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 6th at 11:00 am at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, IA, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4:00 p.m. scripture service. Ramona Jane Larkin was born June 5, 1929 in Clayton County, IA, the daughter of Joseph William and Ethel (Brown) McDowell. She grew up in Elkport and attended Elkport schools. She married Clement William Larkin at the Church of the Nativity in Dubuque, IA, on September 24, 1949. They farmed throughout their married life in Jefferson and Paint Creek Townships of Allamakee County, IA. Ramona always had a big garden and canned hundreds of jars of fruits and vegetables every year. Ramona and Clem retired from the farm in 1994 and moved to Waukon. Ramona was an active member of St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church and the St. Pius Rosary Society. She belonged to Homemakers Club and later volunteered as a receptionist at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Ramona enjoyed sewing and sewed for herself and her children. She also enjoyed making comforters and made many as gifts for family and friends. Dancing with Clem to the Toetappers on Sunday afternoons and the monthly card club gatherings were some of Ramona's other favorite pastimes. Her greatest joy was time spent with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Clem of Waukon; 6 children, Helen (Verle) Guthrie of Highlands Ranch, CO, Michael Larkin of Goose Creek, SC, Elaine Rockwell of Des Moines, IA, John (Sherry) Larkin of Aurora, CO, Thomas Larkin of Erie, CO and Brian (Sara) Larkin of Vinton, IA; 9 grandchildren, Abby, Rachael, John, Katie, Miranda, Elthia and Timothy Larkin, Patti (Bill) Rodriguez and John (Adrienne) Skeels; a great-grandson, Sean Larkin; a brother, John (Dora) McDowell and a foster brother, Dale Lee (Diane) Brown, both of Edgewood, IA; and 7 godchildren, Patty Dahlstrom, Monica Roderick, Duane Larkin, Don Ryan, Mike Gallagher, Sheila Hoerner and Mary Clark. She is preceded in death by her parents; 2 grandchildren, Michael and Mary Ellen Larkin; a son-in-law, Al Rockwell; 3 sisters, Pearl Bell, Martha Johnson and Dorothy Ingles; and a brother, Edgar McDowell. Honorary casketbearers are Sheila Hoerner, Trisha Horstman, Patty Dahlstrom and Gene, Jerry and Cyril Potts. Casketbearers are Bob, Duane and Pete Larkin, Don and Tom Ryan and Mike Gallagher. Held, daughter of Ernest and Bertha Klocke Shafer, was born March 14, 1895, in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, and was a lifetime resident of that area. On August 13, 1913, she was married to August Held. Mr. Held preceded her in death May 20, 1953. She is survived by a son Clifford, rural Waukon; two grandchildren, one great grandchild; a brother, Edward Shafer, rural Postville, and a sister Ruth, Mrs. Paul Fiet, rural Waukon. Burial was made in Bethlehem Church cemetery. Mr. Held had been a resident of Ludlow township his entire life. August Held was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Held on August 8, 1890 in Ludlow township, Postville, and passed away at the Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon, May 20, 1953 at the age of 62 years, nine months and 12 days. Mr. Held had been in poor health for more than three years, hospitalized occasionally, and several weeks ago when he became seriously ill, went to the hospital again, failed rapidly and passed away. As an infant he was baptized in the Zalmona Presbyterian Church. He received his catechism instruction, was confirmed and united with the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church on April 9, 1905. Mr. Held grew to manhood in Ludlow township and on August 13, 1913 he was united in marriage to Esther C. Shafer. To this union one son was born, Clifford, of Ludlow township. The departed lived on the farm in Ludlow until about 10 years age when he retired, built a new home on the farm, where he lived until his passing. He is survived by his wife, his son, his only remaining sister, Meta, Mrs. Ben Flage, and two grandchildren. Both of his parents, and his two brothers preceded him in death. She attended rural schools and was graduated from the Chadwick high school. After teaching for several years, she was married to Francis W. Hughes in 1898. They started in the newspaper publishing business in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, and later at Sabula, then the Elgin Echo from 1902 to 1923, and last at Postville, all in Iowa. After the death of Mr. Hughes in 1926, she sold the Herald and retired. She lived for a short time in Elgin, later at Mt. Carroll, Illinois, and her last home was in Chadwick, Illinois. During her active years Mrs. Hughes participated in social, civic and fraternal activities as a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Stars and social clubs. Mrs. Hughes had been an invalid for several years and died November 7, 1967 at a hospital in Freeport. She had been a patient there since October 13. Surviving are three brothers and three sisters. They are Oswald Strauch, Billings, Montana, Clara Strauch, California, Richard Strauch, Elgin, Mrs. W. T. (Hilda) Rudoff, Minneapolis, Berta Strauch, Vista, California, and Donald Strauch, Mesa, Arizona. One brother, Bernard Strauch, died recently. Attending the funeral from this area were Mrs. Robert Schultz, Luana, Mrs. Margaret Waters, Decorah, Mrs. Paul Waters, Postville, and Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Strauch. A bachelor, he had resided at the hotel Boscobel the last three years. Son of Ezra and Amanda Hughes, he was born in Postville. The family moved to Boscobel about 65 years ago and Chalmer graduated from the local high school. Later he moved to Milwaukee with his parents and made his home there for many years. The last few years he lived at Postville and Boscobel. Mr. Hughes was an overseas veteran of World War I and earned three major combat ribbons. Although well past 50, he joined the Coast Guard and also served his country during World War II. He had been a Great Lakes sailor but spent the major portion of his working years as a railroad employee, and was a retired yard clerk. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and a sister. Surviving are a nephew, E. O. Hughes of Postville; a niece, Vivian Mickel of Boscobel; and several cousins. Also her father, three brothers and a sister, Arthur, Richard, Theodore and Miss Paula Kerndt. E. Entwisle went to Minneapolis Friday to attend the funeral services of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ed. Stanley, who died last Wednesday, following a two years illness from diabetes. She was 56 years of age and her maiden name was Miss Nellie Wolfe of Decorah. Forty years ago her marriage to Mr. Stanley took place. Besides her husband she is survived by an only son Harold. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the chapel in Memorial cemetery, where burial took place. Another sister-in-law, Mrs. Nathan Entwisle, of Waterloo, and George Wolfs, brother of deceased, and wife of Frankville, were also in attendance. Gerald Lee, son of Earl and Phoena (Evans) Ralston was born February 17, 1921, on the family farm southwest of Rossville, Iowa. He attended Bear Hollow Country School and graduated from Waukon Senior High in 1939. After graduation, he went to California, where he worked until he was inducted in the US Army, serving with the 24th Medical Battalion as a Medical Technician from May 1945 until January 1947. He served in the United States and Japan and was discharged at Camp Beale, Calif., following the end of World War II. In 1942, he married Sybil Hough. She passed away in 1971. Gerald spent 35 years at Northrop Aircraft, retiring in 1985. In 1976, he married Nancy Hearn, a co-worker at Northrop Aircraft. They moved to Escondido, Calif., where they lived several years. They later moved to Yreka, Calif., where they lived when Gerald became ill. Gerald liked to go camping and fishing and Nancy and he traveled across the United States He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his step-daughter, Debbie (Marl) Bell; one brother, Leon (Pauline) Ralston of Dubois, Wyo.; and two sisters, Roberta (William) Livingood of Waukon and Lucille (Wilburt) Topel of Milwaukee, Wis. Gerald was preceded in death by three sisters, Beulah (Milo) Livingood of Postville, Helen (George) Gelo of Waukon, and Marjorie (Ruben) Schutte of Decorah; two brothers, Curtis (who died at age six) and Dale Ralston of Lenexa, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.
