"Barney" Zeimet, 70, of 489 Diagonal St., Lansing, died Saturday, November 17, 1990, at St. Francis Medical Center, LaCrosse, WI. Barney was born September 21, 1920 in Lansing to John and Leonette (Althoff) Zeimet. On July 14, 1944 he married Dorothy O'Hara at Wexford. He was a veteran of World War II and was a retired truck driver. Barney and his wife Dorothy also owned Ma & Pa's Country Store in Churchtown for several years. Through his retirement Barney spent much of his time barbecuing for various events. He was also an active members of Lansing VFW Post 5981. Survivors include his wife; three sons, John of Lodi, WI, Robert of Lansing, and Jerry of Dubuque, IA; four daughters, Sharon Costello, Sally Gaines, Sue Richards, and Sandy Rethwisch, all of Lansing; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clem of Lansing, Tom of New Albin, Jim of Albert Lea, MN, and Adrian of Lake of the Ozarks, MO; and two sisters, Mary McCarthy, Dubuque, and Regina Collins, Rockford, IL. He was preceded in death by a sister. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, Rev. Herbert Tegeler officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery. Graveside Military Rites were conducted by VFW Post 5981. Pallbearers were Jim Strub, Dave Christoffer, Roger Reed, Lloyd Welsh, Glen Reed, and Bob Peters. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Laverne Christoffer, Bob Reed, Bill Walleser, Tom Garrett, Levi Sweat, Louie Spinner, Glen Connor and Tom Peters. In 1962 they moved to Clayton. Sylvia was a school teacher, having taught in several country schools in Allamakee County. After many years of attending college, she earned her bachelor's degree at age 62. She taught second grade at Garnavillo until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Waukon, Ia., and for many years belonged to the Homemaker's Club in Clayton. Surviving are her husband, Ronald "Pondo" May of Clayton; two sons, John of Clayton and James of Waukon; a daughter, Kathleen Brosius of Stoddard, Wisc.; and eight grandchildred. Also surviving are four sisters, Goldie Rocksvold, Emerald Grahlman, both of Waukon, Beryl Pokorny of Havanna, Ill., and Opal Britan of Lincoln, Neb.; and two brothers, Roy Thomas Sires of Eastman, Wisc., and Sardius Sires of Gleneden Beach, Ore. Garland farmed and also worked as a maintenance operator for the County Highway Department. He was born April 6, 1900 in New Albin to Frederick and Maria (Timmerman) Meyer. On March 27, 1924 he married Alma A. Meyer at St. John's Wheatland Church in rural New Albin. She died November 10, 1967. A lifelong resident of the New Albin area, Paul was a graduate of New Albin High School. He later owned and operated the City Meat Market. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, New Albin and was an active church member. He was also the treasurer of the New Albin Fire Department for 50 years, served on the New Albin City Council, served on the Board of the New Albin Savings Bank for 50 years, and was a member of the New Albin Community Club. Paul is survived by a son, Glenn of Prairie du Chien, WI; two daughters, Belua Kruse of Eitzen, MN, and Ruth Olson of Decorah; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Pohlman of New Albin. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ora, two sisters and four brothers. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, the Rev. He preceded her in death in May of 1965. Zarwell, 99, New Albin, passed away Saturday, November 16, 1991, at Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, Wis. She had been a resident of Thornton Manor, Lansing, Ia., for the past three months. Ella was born May 30, 1892, in Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minnesota, to John and Irene (Tippery) Myers. She attended rural school in Jefferson Township. On November 2, 1909, Ella married Henry P. Zarwell at the United Methodist Church in New Albin. Henry died October 12, 1961. Ella was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, as well as its Women's Fellowship group. For more than 50 years, she was a member of the Royal Neighbors of New Albin. Ella led an active life and maintained a lifelong interest in local wildlife found along the Mississippi River and the bluffs where she grew up and lived her whole life. With her 'green thumb', she was able to make any type of plant thrive. Despite encountering major health problems in mid-life, Ella had an unwavering optimism, and her strength and courage were an inspiration to all who knew her. She held a special appreciation for those who visited her on a regular basis. For the past twenty-five years, Ella was lovingly cared for in her own home on a day-to-day basis by her son, Herb. Her positive nature, keen mind and sense of humor were with her until the very end. Survivors include one son, Herbert (Helen), and one daughter, Gladys (Raymond) Sires, all of New Albin, Ia.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Floyd, one grandson, Neil, one sister, Clara Darling, and one brother, David, who died in infancy. Services were held Monday November 18, at St. Peter's U.C.C., New Albin, Ia. The Reverend Dennis Siebert officiated and burial was in the New Albin City cemetery. Esther Mary Fiet, daughter of Herman and Louise (Klepper) Hansmeier, was born April 26, 1901 in Ludlow Township, A1Iamakee County, Iowa. She passed away August 19, 1979 at the Community Memorial hospital in Postville, at the age of 78 years. She received her education in the rural schools of Ludlow Township. Esther was confirmed in 1915 at the Salem United Church of Christ. August 9, 1923 she married Waiter Fiet at the family home. For 46 years she cleaned the Bethlehem church, providing flowers for the sanctuary throughout the growing season. She was a charter member of the Bethlehem Ladies Aide. She is preczeded in death by her parents; a brother, Elmer Hansmeier; and a sister, Mrs. Martin (Meta) Adam. She is survived by her husband, Walter; a daughter, Mrs. Irvin (Delois) Flage of Ludlow; a grandson, Daniel Flage of LaCrescent, MN; a granddaughter, Mrs. Joel (Deborah) Timmerman of Ludlow; two brothers, John and Rueben Hansmeier, both of Waukon; and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Emma) Stock of Waukon and Mrs. Dorothy Haugen of Decorah. From 1928 to 1964 she was owner of the Waukon Greenhouse. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jean Johnson of Waukon; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A son, Richard; brothers, Charles and Henry; sister, Verna; and half brothers William Beighle and George Beighle preceded her in death. Allamakee county sheriff's officers say Falck was heading east around 8:30 a.m. when he pulled to the shoulder preparatory to making a u-turn on the highway. A following car was driven by Eleanor Learn, 66, Austin, MN. She thought the Falck car was going to stop on the shoulder, but when the u-turn attempt was made, her car struck the Falck car broadside on the driver's side. Falck's wife Nellie, 60, received multiple fractures in the accident and was also brought to Waukon's hospital, where she remained a patient in good condition Monday. A daughter Rebecca, 21, also brought to the hospital, was treated and released, as was the driver of the other car. This was the first traffic fatality of 1980 in Allamakee county. Funeral services were held today at 1:30 p.m. from Waterville Lutheran Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Roger Zieg officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She attended public and religious schools in Lewiston and as a young girl did housework in various homes in this community. In the year 1899 she entered into Holy Matrimony with Fred Smith. Soon after their marriage, they moved to the neighborhood of Dorchester, Ia. where they worked on the Hartley farm. While living there, they became affiliated with Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church. Here their children were born and reared. In the year 1929, they moved to La Crosse, Wis. Mrs. Smith enjoyed the best of health until the latter part of the past year, when the years of her high old age weighted heavily upon her. God spared her the agony and pain when He suddenly, but quietly, called her to her eternal rest last Monday. (3 August 1959) Those who mourn her departure are her life mate, Mr. Fred Smith of La Crosse, Wis.; four sons and two daughters, namely: Wilfred of Waukon, Ia.; Thomas, John and Merle or La Crosse, Wis.; Mrs. Floyd Kumpf of Dorchester, Ia.; Mrs. Obert Haugstad of Caledonia, Minn.; one brother, Earl Hahn of Waukon, Ia.; three sisters, Mrs. Russell (Barbara) Lane of Waukon, Ia., Mrs. Roy (Lena) Sires of Postville, Ia. and Mrs. Daniel (Anna) Sires of New Albin, Ia.; 16 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. One brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Two children also preceded her in death, namely: Marvel and Margaret. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Grace Methodist Church, New Albin, Ia., with the Rev. E. DeBuhr officiating. Burial was made in Mt. Hope cemetery. She was born in Jefferson Township, MN, on June 17, 1891. She married Clyde Visger and they had three children; Leslie, Lila and Leonard. Florence had been a housewife most of her life and celebrated 50 years of marriage before her husband's death. She is survived by one son, Leonard, and his wife, Helen, of La Crosse; six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her children, Leslie and Lila. Funeral services were held Thursday evening, February 21, in Woodruff Funeral Home, La Crosse, WI, with Rev. James E. Barsch officiating. Graveside services were held Friday morning at the New Albin Cemetery, New Albin, IA. Plagge, 20, of New Albin, died Saturday morning, March 2, 1991, as a result of a one-car accident near Reno, MN. Joe was born February 8, 1971, in La Crosse to Dixie (Paus) and Gerald Plagge of New Albin. He graduated from Kee High School and was employed as a body repairman at Eversole Motors, La Crosse, WI. Survivors besides his parents include one brother, Jeremiah, at home; his grandfather, Harold Paus, Eitzen, MN; and his grandmother, Evelyn Plagge, New Albin. Services were held Tuesday, March 5, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, New Albin. Rev. Nancy Anderson and Fr. Henry Charipar officiated. Burial was in the New Albin City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Paus, Joel Wurm, Jim Hosch, Chris Schoh, Kraig Leppert and Mike Konkel. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Sam Wurm, Tim Paus, Scott Colsch, Ron Konkel, Jeff Meyer, Janice Mellick and Dale Krambeer. Burke Thornburg Funeral Home, Lansing, was in charge of arrangements. ****************************** NEW ALBIN YOUTH KILLED OVER WEEKEND Joseph Plagge, 20, of New Albin, was found dead Saturday morning following a one-car traffic accident about four miles north of the Iowa border. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Plagge was found at 9 a.m. on Hwy. 26. They believe the accident occurred sometime between 2 and 5 a.m. Plagge was southbound when his car ran off the left side of the road, striking a tree. He was ejected from the car, authorities said. She was born December 11, 1896, in Union City township, Allamakee county, to John and Louisa (Ashbacher) Sadler. She married Fred Weymiller on April 25, 1916, in the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church in rural New Albin. He died on February 27, 1958. She was a member of Mount Hope Presbyterian Church and it various women's groups. Survivors include four sons, Leland of Spring Grove, MN, Fred Jr. of Yuba City, CA, Donald of Lansing, and Ronald of New Albin; seven daughters, Evelyn Wild of Lansing, Helen Campbell and Lorna Vichlach, both of Waukon, Betty Smerud and Shirley Bulman, both of New Albin, Hope Griffin of Rochester, MN, and Nancy Collins of Hales Corners, WI; 51 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday, June 14, in the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Louise Gordon-Denniston and Douglas Gordon-Denniston officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
