He was the son of Eli and Mary Jane (Lusk) Wampler, who came to Iowa in 1850 and settled as pioneers in Jackson county, where they resided for two years, removing thence to Allamakee county in 1852, and this has since been his home. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Wampler enlisted in Company B, 12th Iowa Infantry, and served his country faithfully to the close of the war, when he was mustered out and honorably discharged. He participated in many battles and minor engagements, and was wounded more than once and, with his regiment, was made prisoner at the Battle of Shiloh, or Pittsburgh Landing, when Gen. Prentice was captured with most of his command. During the war, on April 11, 1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Duff. In 1914 they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage. Of their seven children, two had preceded him in death, James and Warren. The living are Eli, Lawrence, Mrs. John Mills and Mrs. Iver Stokke of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Mrs. Lou Seelig of Cedar Rapids, Ia. These, with the aged mother, are left to mourn, all but Mrs. Mills being present at the funeral. Mr. Wampler became a member of the Mt. Hope Presbyterian church in early manhood. When he came to Waukon he removed his membership to this church. He was, for a number of years, one of its active board of Elders. He loved the church and loved to meet with the boys of the Civil War. He had a wide circle of relatives who knew his as Uncle Robert, and a wide acquaintance in the city and county. The remains, accompanied by the relatives, arrived here Friday morning, and the funeral was held in the afternoon. Funeral service at the Presbyterian church conducted by his long-time pastor, Rev. R.L. VanNice, assisted by Rev. Paul Krebs, the present pastor, and burial in Oakland cemetery. Source: Allamakee County, Iowa Newspaper Clipping
