My "Thanks" to Richard Keir for his answer concerning when the various townships were formed. That was exactly the information I needed. I will add that to the general text/notes portion of the 1852 census transcription to aid others in locating information about their ancestors. ......Pat

On page 227 of "The Past and Present of Allamakee County" 1913 it gives the following regarding the date of organization for the twps. And I quote--- Linton, Taylor and Post, in 1851 At the April 1852, term of the County court the course of Paint creek was officially recognized as the division line between Linton and Taylor twps; a petition for the division of Linton twp was rejected: and a petition for the separate organization of "Township 96, Range 4" was also rejected. Linton originally included the whole tier of twp 96, but Post voted separately at the April, 1852 , election, as perhaps Franklin did likewise. Lansing in February, 1852. Makee, Ludlow, Union Prairie, Union City, Lafayette, Jefferson and Paint Creek, in April 1852. At the December term, 1853, the boundaries of the following twps were established: Linton, Taylor, Paint Creek, Jefferson, Franklin and Post. But all these had held separate elections previous to this date. Franklin and Post were taken from Linton. Jefferson and Paint Creek from Taylor. Fairview, March 5, 1855, taken from Linton. Hanover and Iowa, March 5, 1855, taken from Union City. French Creek and Waterloo, March 3, 1856, taken from Union City. Center (or Village Creek), March 5, 1856, taken from Lafayette. This comprising the eighteen townships of the county. I hope this will help you. I feel lucky to have original copies (2 volume set) of the Past and Present of Allamakee County by Ellery M. Hancock 1913 which were obtained by my father and passed on to me. I am in the process of transcribing the 1852 and 1856 census of the various townships of Allamakee County for publication on the Internet sites of "us-census.org" and "USGenWeb". Not being a native of Allamakee, it has been a bit difficult to identify when and how some of the various townships were originally formed. The 1852 census shows that 12 townships then existed. In alphabetical order, they included: Franklin, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lansing, Linton, Ludlow, Makee, Paint Creek, Post, Taylor, Union City and Union Prairie. By mid-1856 (as best I know), Center, Fairview, French Creek, Hanover, Iowa and Waterloo Townships had been formed and are in existence today. If someone has access to a copy of the book of the "Past and Present of Allamakee County", will you please let me know the date of formation of the latter six townships AND from what township they were sub-divided. For example, I understand that French Creek and Hanover were formerly parts of Union City Township. Thank you, .......Pat (Florida)

My great-grandfather was Julius Oleson/Olson. He was married to Eliza Gilbertson in Norway. I think he came from Norway with Evan Swenson, going first to Quebec, then Chicago, Madison, Wis. and settled in Postville, Iowa. He had a wife & baby in Norway, who came later. My grandmother Louise was born in Iowa in l876. I think he had a brother Andreas (Andrew). I don't know if he had any other siblings. A lot of my information came from [email protected], so is a decedent of Evan Swenson. She is on the Allamakee Website. Does this help? Gean McMasters
