I haven't a Frank in my database, though. From what I have been able to gather there was a Catholic Steele line and also a Protestant Steele line. My Steeles belong to the latter group and are buried in Oakland Main Cemetery in Waukon, IA. I did find a Frank Steele in the 1840 Iowa Federal Census Index for CLAYTON County. I believe I've run across the surname also being spelt without the e : Steel. There was at one time a Steele Photography Studio in Waukon, circa late 1800's. I haven't delved into researching that much yet.

To them five sons were born; William W. and David D., both of whom have passed on; Newton N. of Chicago, Wiley M. of Hickman, and Frank F. of Curtis. In 1857 they moved to Nebraska in a covered wagon, settling on the west branch of Salt creek about five miles northwest of Hickman. Later, owing to Indian troubles, they returned to Iowa, stopping one winter in Nebraska City. In 1865, at the close of the war, they again returned to Nebraska, and settled on a pre-emption about four miles south and west of Lincoln. After a few years residence they moved to Lincoln, later to Waverly, and Raymond, where James M. Riddell died in 1882. She was later united in marriage to David A. Riddell, residing at Raymond until his death in 1912. The past three years! of her life was spent at the home of her son in Hickman, where she passed to reward, aged 81 years, 3 months and 18 days. Short services were held at the residence Thursday evening by Rev. J. N. Bridges, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which denomination the deceased had been a member for over fifty years. Services were held at the M. E. church at Raymond, in charge of Rev. Lowe; burial taking place at the Oak View cemetery, Raymond. In these days when things of the world are allowed to crowd out the spiritual and family alters are becoming more uncommon, it is refreshing to know a character who, regardless of circumstances or conditions kept up this sacred custom over a period of 61 years. Surnames: LAUGHLIN, DOUGLAS Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Tk.2ADE/2265.6 Message Board Post: DIED. LAUGHLIN-In Chicago, Jan. 9th, 1892 of grip and internal hemorrhage, Elmer A. Laughlin, aged twenty-three years and about two months. Elmer was the only remaining son by his first wife of J.H. Laughlin, five having followed each other to the land of rest in a few years. It is a crushing affliction and Mr. Laughlin and the sisters have the warmest sympathy of all our people. Elmer was sick but a short time, having had an attack of grip but recovered from it to go to work again. He was taken worse Wednesday afternoon and died the following Saturday afternoon. Miss Lillian was telegraphed for at Des Moines and arrived in Chicago a few hours before his death. She arrived here with the remains on Monday morning and the funeral was held from the Congregational church at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, the interment being in the Minert cemetery. Elmer, like all the other brothers, was an exemplary young man, greatly respected by all who know him. He had a good position with a wholesale firm in Chicago, and his prospects were as bright as any young man could wish. But such are the uncertainties of life. While the old must die the young may also die. "In the midst of life we are in death," and if there remain anything to do to prepare for the change there should be no delay. In this case there is no doubt but the end was peace, and that beyond the winter storms of this uncertain and precarious life, if there is a harbor where there is "rest, sweet rest," our young friend is far better off than we who remain to buffet with the storms a little longer. Peace be with him. Submitter's note: He was the son of John Henry Laughlin and his first wife Mary Douglas.

Sept. 22nd, 1886. About 6 years ago Henry Laughlin left his father's home to seek his fortune in the West. He went with high ambition and a strong heart, ready to dare and do, amidst the many difficulties and self-denials of pioneer life. He located at Jamestown, Dakota, and for several years seemed to prosper, until his health began to fail. His manly independence is shown by the fact he suffered long and probably much alone, before he called upon his father for help. When his father brought him home a few weeks ago it was already evident that he was beyond the reach of medical aid and the care of friends. Thus we are often disappointed in our earthly hopes, plans, and ambitions. Even young men, in the prime of life, sometimes must yield and go, when the summons comes. Henry Laughlin was known as a virtuous and honorable young man; he was baptized when a small boy, grew up in a Christian home, had the Christian hope, and in his last days, expressed his trust in Christ as his Savior, saying that in this trust he was not afraid to die. In the prime of life, when the world is full of promise, we may be cut down. How important, therefore, that our lives be linked with the life of Him who knows us altogether, and "remembereth that we are dust." It is with more than ordinary sadness that we record the sudden death of Willie Laughlin, son of J. H. Laughlin, which occurred on Monday evening. He was in town on Thursday of last week, and was in our office at that time. Four days later he was dead. That dreaded scourge, diphtheria, fastened its grip upon him and he had to succumb. There is an inexpressible sadness when such a young life, just budding into manhood, with all its hopes and possibilities of life before him, is called to lay down the burden and be placed in the silent chamber of the grave. Willie was a grand good boy and perhaps he is just as well off as he would be had he lingered longer "between the barren peaks of the two eternities." But still we cannot refrain from mourning for his untimely end. And the father and brother and sisters, God pity them in their great and sudden bereavement. The mother and at least two sons have "gone before," and this crushing blow must be all that they can bear. We ho! pe that kind friends and neighbors may do all in their power to comfort and console the afflicted family. Submitter's note: Williams Burrows Laughlin died May 4, 1891. She united with the church March 10, 1895. She was connected with the Sunday school from her earliest childhood and took the deepest interest in anything connected with the church and school. For a number of years the deceased has been in poor health, but since last Easter, which was the last time she was able to be at church, she has been confined to her bed most of the time. In her last illness she gave strong evidence of her trust in her Savior. Her patience in suffering and her sweet resignation has impressed all who have been at her bedside. Toward the last she was anxious to go and talked much about the "Home Over There". The Bible was ever by her pillow. The 23rd Psalm was a favorite passage of Scripture. Only a few hours before her departure she repeated, "Though I walk though the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for Thy rod and Thy staff shall comfort me." "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Aug. 2nd (1898), at the age of 20 years, 8 months, and 13 days she fell asleep in Jesus. Hers was a beautiful life. She was beloved by all who knew her. Besides the parents, three sisters and a brother survive her. Our neighbors have been afflicted in the past few years so often that our whole people sympathize with them in no ordinary degree. That insidious disease consumption sapped her vitals and Cora went to meet her mother and brothers on the other side. She is at rest and may a kind Providence soothe and comfort those who mourn. The funeral was held from the Congregational church on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Pollard officiating, assisted by Rev. Barton. Interment in Minert Cemetery. In 1849, in company with two other families, the Laughlins moved to Northeast Iowa, making the journey with ox teams, being six weeks on the way. After looking about for a desirable location, they came to Post Township, where they bought a squatters claim (a track of land granted to soldiers of the Mexican War - Wm. Paine - by the government) paying $1.25 an acre for his relinquishment. This land is now owned by James R. Laughlin. The following years were busy ones spent in doing pioneer work, clearing the land, getting out building timbers for the house, which replaced the log cabin, and fencing the farm.
